WILLIAM C..1VIARTINEAU AND CLARENCE R. MARTINEAU, OF ALBANY,.NEW YORK.
CAIR DOOR FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
Application filed April 3, 1915. Serial No.'19,022.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WILLIAM C- MAR- TINEAU and CLARENCE R. MAnTrNEAm'both citizens of the United States, and residents of Albany, Albany county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. 7
ferred form of our device, Figure 1 is a top plan, and Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same attached to a car orthe like; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the plane 33, Fig. 2, Figs. 4 and 5 are detached perspective views of parts of the device.
lldesignates the wall of a car or other structure, having an opening .12, a stile 13 and a sliding door 14. On door 14 is bolted one bolt engaging part of the device 15 comprising a strap member 16, a widened head 17, an inturned flange 18 and a forwardly projecting lug 19, provided with a vertical aperture 20. On wall 11 is a combined striker, door guiding bolt engaging and locking portion 21, embracing stile 13, having a striking flange 22 at the door side of the stile, a right angled flange 23 at the opposite side and formed with bolt hole 24, a front wall 25 also provided with bolt hole 26, and a head consisting of a vertical, angular wall 27, and integral horizontal flanges 28, 29 respectively above and below said wall, and projecting on both sides thereof. Flanges .28'and 29 are provided with verticallyregistering holes 30, 31 at the right or door side of wall 27 flange 28 has an aperture 32 at the left side of the wall and preferably countersunk, and a countersunk depression 33, see Fig. 4. Bolted to stile 13 is a bolt carrying part 34, comprising a head 35, a horizontal arm 37 projecting at an angle from the stile and a vertical round rod member 38 the lower end of which is supported in depression 33. Mounted for vertical and rotary movement on rod 38 is a bolt portion 39 comprising a head 40 having an annularly flanged aperture 41 adapted to ride on rod 38, a locking aperture 42, and a depending bolt rod 43. A lock or seal 44,
shown in Fig. 2, is employed as hereafter described.
The operation of the device will be readily understood from an inspection of the draw-- ings.
Parts 15 and 21 are securely bolted, one to the door and the other to the wall. Part 34 is secured above part 21 and with its lower end supported and held thereby. Bolt portion 39 is placed on rod 38 before part 34 is bolted into place, the bolt rod 43 ofpart 39 being substantially shorter than rod 38, so that the lower end of rod 43 may swing freely above flange 28. When door 141s open, the end of rod 43 may conveniently rest in aperture 32, so as not to interfere with the closing of the door, see Fig.
4. When the door is being closed, lug 19 slides between flanges 28 and 29 of portion 21, which serve as guides for its movement,
until flanges 18 and 22 come into contact. When the door is closed, boltreceiving hole 20 in lug 19 and holes 30, 31 in flanges 28, 29 are in vertical line, so that bolt 39 may be rotated on rod 38 and then dropped therethrough, as in Fig. 2, thus bolting the door in closed position. Apertures 42 in head 40 and 32 in flange 28 now register, so that'the shackle of a seal or lock 44 may be passed through both, thus preventing the withdrawal of the bolt.
It will be understood that many me chanical alterations may be made in the parts of the device without departing from our invention.
What we claim is:
1. A car door fixture for securing a sliding door to a stile or the like, comprising a portion secured to one of said car parts and having a lug formed with a vertical hole therethrough; a bolt engaging and locking portion secured to the other of said car parts and provided with a hole which'registers vertically with the hole in said lug when the door is closed; means outsideof and above said last named portion for supporting a bolt; a bolt on said supporting means constructed and fitted for vertical movement through both said holes; and means on said bolt and on one of said portions, each formed with an aperture adapted to register when said bolt is in operative position, and to receive a sealing means the normal action of said bolt being independent of any means for such prevention.
2. A car door fixture for securing a sliding door to a stile or the like, comprising a portion secured to one of said carparts an'd'havinga'lng formed with a ve rticalhole' therethrough; a bolt engaging and locking portion secured to the other of said car parts and provided with a hole whichregisters with the hole in said lug when the door portion secured to oneof said car parts and having a lug formed with" a vertical hole therethrongh, abolt engagingand locking portion secured to the other of said car parts and provided'with a--hole-whicli registers with-the hole in said lug when "the door isclos ed; a vertical rod supported above said last-named portion a 'b'olt lia'vihg an offset head having liinite'd" rotary and vertical 7 movement on said rod and-'siipportingit for vertical'movernent throrigh said holes; lock mg "apertures' 'insaid bead 1 and said locking portionv adapted to register when said bolt is in operative position, the-aperture in said a 4. A car door fixture for securing a sliding doorto a stile or the like, comprising a portionseciired'tb one of said car parts and having a forwardly projecting lug formed with a vertical hole 'therethrough {5L3 bolt engaging, ddor-giiiding'aild-flocking portion secured to fthe other of car' parts and formed with parallel, horizontal" flanges between which said liig isadapted" to' pass, flaiiges be'ing each provided-with aliole registering vertically with the hole in said lug when the door isc iosedg-means' outside of and above said last 'narned portion for sn'ppoitifigabolt; bolt" ofi said sii'ppoi'tiiig means construc -ea and fitted far verti'calj mevemaramugh all; three said holes; and
