Be it known that I, lJAMEs E. DOYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Printing-Presses, of which the following isA va specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and thevbest mode in which I .have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
' yThis invention termed an attachment for printing presses'is more particularly a limiting device for use in conjunction with a yCrordon type of press in which a platen is caused to swing'toward and away from the type-form.
Those engaged'in the art of printing have found it to be very diiiicult, indeedv fre. quently impossible to produce an impression of uniform color intensity over the entire area of the form. This circumstance is owing to an imparting of various degrees of pressure at different points of contact between the platen and type-form. Such variation in pressure is `due either to faulty .manufactura to inaccurate vmounting or to an excessively developed loose play of the The latter of these possible causes is the most factor of imperfection which I have succeeded in overcoming.
Accordingly, my object has been to effect a simultaneous contact throughout the area of the type-form and this I have accomplished by arranging for an independent contact between the platen and bed-frame. In other words, the surface of the form is not of itself intended to terminate the range of approach of the platen. With the aid amongelse of adjusting means I am enabled to shim up the plane of advance of the platen until it lies parallel with the surface of the type-form and thereby consistently obtain long sought results.
The inventive conception is associated with vmeans which are hereinafter explainedand variously combined in the claims. While the annexed drawing and particular description thereof, set forth in detail the preferred form embodying my invention, it should be understood that the means only exemplify some of the many diversified mechanical forms with which the principle of my invention `may be justly applied.

A chase B of any approved form is adapted to snugly fit against the bed c3, as shown in Figs. I and II. An insert member b is in turn adapted to snugly fit and be removable from the chase B. This insert member b itself supports the form b2 in which a group vof selected type b3 are mounted. The end or impressing surfaces of the type I have designated with the reference characters b4. n

carries the platen c and is so mounted as to be capable of causing the latter to swing f toward and away from the type-form. It
has not been deemed necessary to illustrate the precise manner in which the rocker C is operatively connected with the press since this is well known to the art and since furthermore nothing whatsoever is claimed in reference thereto. Extending through each of the opposite lateral ends of the platen c are a pair of screw-threaded openings c3, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear. The forward plain surface of the platen I have identified as c2. A pad X, usually of cardboard, is shown aiixed to the surface c2.k It is against this padding that the paper stock Y is in brackets held through thek agency of a pair of oscillating gripper arms Z. These gripper arms appear in Fig. II, and since the `manner in -which movement is imparted to them is likewise old, the mode in which they are operatively secured to the press has not been disclosed.
