AUTOMATIC TIME-LOOK FOR YVORKMENS TIME-RECORDERS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FLORIAN J. MAETEL and FRED W. EATON, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Automatic Time-Lock for Workmens I.ime-Recorders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to time recorders and has for its object means for preventing the operation of the time recorder at predetermined intervals of time, which means is simple in construction and highly ellicient in use, and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan of a portion of the manual of one type of time recorder embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of parts seenin Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, partly in elevation, on the plane of line ii-A, Fig. 1, the means for controlling the operation of the electromagnets being shown diagrammatically. Fig. i is a detail view of parts seen in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an elevation of parts seen in Fig. 4:.
We have here illustrated our time clock as embodied in the Hawley type of time recorder, that is, a time recorder having a time actuated drum on which the record sheet is mounted and a stylus individual to each workman and movable into and out of position to engage the paper on the periphery of the drum, each stylus having a manually operable key individual thereto by which it is moved into and out of operative position.

9 is a rocking member or shaft common to all the keys e1 and having means as a shoulder 10 projecting into the path of the shoulder 11 on each of the keys ei, so that when each key is pulled outwardly, from its position shown in Fig. 2, the shoulder 11 thereof will engage the shoulder 10 and rock the shaft, the shoulder 11 passing from the rear to the front side of the shoulder 10, and hence when the same key is moved inwardly, the shoulder 11 will also engage the shoulder 10 and rock the shaft in the opposite direction. This shaft usually operates a suitable alarm not shown, but so far as this invention is concerned it is not necessary that it perform any function other than coacting with the time controlled locking means.
The locking means is here shown as mounted on the frame 5 and is a self contained structure supported by its own frame 12. This locking means comprises a locking member 13 mounted on a cross rod 14 extending between the side plates of the frame 12 and having one end movable into and out of a lengthwise notch 15 formed in a disk 16 associated with the shaft 9, the member 13 terminating at its upper end in a pointer 17 coacting with a scale 18 to indicate the position of the locking member.
The locking member is actuated by means of a cam wheel 19 mounted on a spindle 20 supported between the side plates of the frame 12 and having peripheral high and low points 21, which coact with a pin or roller 23 on an angularly arranged arm 24 mounted on said rod 11 and connected to the member 13, the members 13 and 24 forming an angle lever. The cam wheel is actuated by an armature 25 of electromagnetic means which also includes magnets 26, the motion of the armature being transmitted to the cam wheel as presently described, and the magnets being connected in an electric circuit 27 which is opened and closed by switches 28, 29 which are controlled in their movement in any suitable manner by the time movement, the switches 28, 29 being here shown as resembling the hands of a clock and movable into engagement with contact points 30, 31 respectively. When both switches engage at the same time, any
two contact points 30, 31, the circuit 27 is closed. The magnets 26 are supported by frame members 32 fixed to the frame 12 and the armature 25 is pivoted at 33 to the frame members and the motion thereof is transmitted to the cam wheel 19 by means of a pawl carried by, and pivoted to, the free end oi the armature 25 and coacting with a ratchet wheel 35 mounted concentric with the cam wheel 19, on the spindle 20.
Uverthrow oi the ratchet wheel 35 by the pawl 3 is prevented by means of a detent 36 carried at the free end of the armature 25 and so located with respect to the free end 01" the pawl as to engage the ratchet wheel after the pawl 3% has actuated the same, the pawl 34: and detent 36 forming substantially an escapement. The cam wheel. 19 is normally locked from movement by a detent 37 carried by the free end of the armature 25 and coasting with a toothed wheel 38 mounted on the spindle 20 and interposed between the ratchet wheel 35 and the cam wheel 19, the detent 3? rising from the armature and overhanging the toothed wheel 38 as seen in Fig. 3.
In time recorders of the class to which we have shown this lock as applied, it is desirable that tl e records all begin at the same time for workmen making regular registrations, that is, if the time of all the workmen commences to run at 7 :00 a. m., it is desirable to lock the clock from operation so that it cannot be operated until a few minutcs before 7 :00 a. m., and then again locked at 7:00 a. m. so that late registrations cannot be made until the times expires for which the late workmen are docked for being late.
In operation, tie switches 28, 29 are regulated to momentarily close the circuit, at a predetermined time and when such time arrives, the armature 25 is attracted by the action of the magnets 26, the pawl 34% actuates tl e ratchet wheel 35 and cam wheel 19 causing the cam wheel to pass the high point 21 out of en agement with the roller 23 and permit the roller 23 to drop into the low point, and thus causing the arm 13 to move into the notch 15 of the disk 16 associated with the rocking shaft 9 which is common to all the keys 1. The movement of the armature 25 moves the detent 37 temporarily out of operative position and permits the same to return into engagement with the toothed wheel 38 when the circuit 27 is broken. At a predetermined period after unlocking the recorder, the cam switches 28, 29 momentarily close the circuit 27 so that the magnets 26 are energized and the armature 25 actuated to move the cam wheel 19 and elevate the arm 24, thus shifting the locking member 13 from its position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig.5. A suitable handle 39 might be provided for operincense ating the locking member 13 by hand by an authorized person having access to the inte rior of the clock.
What we claim is:
1. in a workmans time recorder comprising a plurality of shiftable keys, each individual to a workman, a device common to all or the keys and provided with an abutment cooperating with abutments on the keys, an abutment on each of the keys cooperating with the abutment on said device whereby the keys are held against movement when the device is locked, and means for locking the device against movement comprising a locking member, a cam wheel having high and low points, means actuated by the cam wheel and connected to the locking member for positioning the locking member in and out of operative position, and means for actuating the cam wheel, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a workmans time recorder comprising a plurality of shittable keys, each individual to a workman, a device common to all or the keys and provided with an abutment cooperating with abutments on the keys, an abutment on each of the keys cooperating with the abutment on said device whereby the keys are held against movement when the device is locked, and means for locking the device against movement comprising a locking member, a cam wheel having high and low points, means actuated by the cam wheel and connected to the locking member for positioning the locking member in and out of operative position, electromagnetic means for actuating the cam Wheel, and means for controlling the operation of the electromagnetic means, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a workmans time recorder comprising a plurality of shittable keys, each individual to a workman, a device common to all of the keys and provided with an abutment cooperating with abutments on the keys, an abutment on each of the keys c0- operating with the abutment on said device whereby the keys are held against movement when the device is locked, and means for locking the device against movement comprising a locking member, a cam wheel having high and low points, means actuated by the cam wheel and connected to the locking member for positioning the locking member in and out of operative position, a ratchet wheel arranged to drive the cam wheel, electromagnetic means including an armature having a pawl for coacting with the ratchet wheel, the armature having means for engaging the ratchet wheel and preventing overthrow, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a workmans time recorder comprising a plurality of shiftable keys, each individual to a workman, a device common to all of the keys and provided with an abutment cooperating with abutments on the keys, an abutment on each 01' the keys cooperating with the abutment on said device whereby the keys are held against movement when the device is locked, and means for locking the device against movement comprising a locking member, a cam wheel havmg high and low points, means actuated by the cam wheel and connected to the locking member for positioning the locking member in and out of operative position, a ratchet Wheel arranged concentric with the cam wheel, electromagnetic means including an armature having a pawl for coacting with the ratchet wheel, and a detent for normally holding the cam Wheel from movement, the detent being movable out of operative position during the movement of the armature to actuate the ratchet wheel, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a workman's time recorder comprising a plurality of shiftable keys, each individual to a workman, a device common to all of the keys and provided with an abutment cooperating with abutments on the keys, an abutment on each of the keys cooperating with the abutment on said device whereby the keys are held against movement when the device is locked, and means for locking the device against movement comprising a pivoted locking member, a cam wheel having high and low points, means actuated by the cam wheel and coacting with the locking member for positioning the looking member in and out of operative position, a ratchet wheel and a toothed wheel arranged concentric with the cam wheel, electromagnetic means comprising an armature having a pair of pawls for coacting with the ratchet wheel, one pawl for actuating the ratchet wheel and the other pawl for preventing overthrow thereof, and a detent carried by the armature for coacting with the toothed wheel, the detent being arranged relatively to the pawl to engage the toothed wheel when the pawl is out of engagement with the ratchet Wheel, substantiaily as and for the purpose specified.
6. The combination of a time recorder having a plurality of manually operable parts individual to each workman, a member common to all of said parts and movable by each of the same when said parts are free to move, and a time lock coacting with said member for preventing the movement thereof and the movement of said manually operable parts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The combination of a time recorder having a plurality of manually operable parts individual to each workman, a frame supporting said parts, a rocking member supported by the frame, said member being common to all of said parts and movable thereby during the operations thereof, the rocking member being provided with a part formed with a lengthwise notch, and a time lock comprising a frame supported by the first-mentioned frame, a locking member movable into and out of the notch, a cam wheel having high and low points, means engaged with the cam wheel and connected to the locking member for transmitting the movement of the cam wheel to the locking member, and alternately positioning the locking member in and out ofthe notch, and means for operating the cam Wheel periodically, substantially as and for the purpose described.
