Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1%, 11915.
Application filed July 29, 1914. Serial No. 853,941.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MURRAY R. BODINE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Muncy, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Supports for Drawers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a support for drawers in the nature of a slide support, providing means on which the drawer may be easily moved in and out and which will avoid the necessity of mortising the uprights of the furniture as is usually required.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a drawer support including a metallic member appropriately formed to provide for the reception of balls which when in position provide a convenient means for cooperation with the drawers, the balls projecting so as to support the drawers out of possible contact with the adjacent comparatively rigid portions of the structure.
The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved drawer support. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. i is an end View.
In constructing the improved drawer support, I utilize a strip of sheet metal 1 of any desired or appropriate length in accordance with the use to which it is to be put. The strip is formed to provide a U-shaped housing including side walls 2 and 3 and a bottom wall 4 disposed at right angles to the side walls. One of the side walls at a point about one-half its height is bent laterally at right angles to the opposing side wall and projected oppositely therefrom, providing what is in the finished article a horizontal edge 5.
At appropriate points throughout the length of the channel previously described below and to one side of the ledge 5, the walls of said channel are formed with opposing rounded depressions 6, each pair of depressions forming a seat for the metallic ball 7. The size of the seat thus formed as compared with the ball is suflicient to prevent accidental displacement of the ball While permitting free rotation thereof. By reason of the particular arrangement of the balls, the same may be readily inserted and removed with the fingers, requiring no special tool for the application. The end edges of the ledge 5 and the opposing side wall 3 are preferably formed with integral spurs 8 which may be driven into the material of the furniture to properly support the slide, though Where such slide is of a considerable length it is also preferred to form in the wall 3 above the ball seat one or more openings 9 for the reception of screws or simi lar fastenings.
In use, the improved slide will effectively support and guide the drawers in movement, the use of the balls as sole drawer support permitting a full, easy movement of the drawer and preventing the possibility of sticking. The metallic section of the support is of course to be constructed of any desired length and the use of any suitable or appropriate material is contemplated. The peculiar arrangement of the balls permits the drawer to operate on top of the balls or alongside of the same, the balls in either instance serving as a medium for receiving the sliding movement of the drawer.
What is claimed is:
As an integral article of manufacture, a drawer slide comprising a strip of sheet metal formed to provide a U-shaped housing, a wall extending above the channel in alinement with one of the walls of the channel, and a second wall extended laterally of the channel at right angles to the first mentioned wall and in alinement with the base of said first mentioned wall, each of the walls being extended beyond the channel at both ends of the slide, an integral fastening means formed in the extended portions of both walls, the walls of the channel being lprelssed out at spaced intervals to receive an s.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MURRAY R. BODINE.
Witnesses:
