lie it known that I, MICHAEL Gnovgga citizen of the United States. residing atBrooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Magazine-Guns, of which the following is a specification. a
This invention relates to magazine: guns and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed. I
An object of the invention is to provide a gun of simple and durable structure, having a cartridge magazine connected therewith. there being means, provided for automatically feeding the cartridges successively from the magazine to the end of the bore of the gun, there also being provided means for automatically firing the cartridge when the same is in alinement with the 'gun bore. With the above object in view the gun comprises a barrel pivotally mounted at one end upon a block, wherebv the barrel may be swung vertically to obtain adesired trajectory, and the said block is pivoted for horizontal movement upon a suitable base or standard. A' casing is mounted at the rear end of the barrel and incloses two disks mounted for simultaneous turning movement in opposite directions. Means are provided for turning the said disks and the disks are provided at their peripheries with semi-cartridge chambers adapted to register with each other during the turning movement of the disks and when brought together they constitute complete cartridge chambers. A cartridge hopper is mounted atthe side of the casing and its outlet is so shaped and disposed as to feed the cartridges, one by one into the casing and into the chambers of the lowermost disk. An abutment disk is fixed with relation to the lowermost disk and carries a series of spring pressed firing pins, located at the chambers of the lowermost disk. Spring pressed hammers are also carried by the'abutment disks and a cam member is mounted upon the casing and the said hammers have contact th the same as they approach the Firing point. whereby they are withdrawn from the pin, and when the ends of the hammers pass beyond the said cam members, the
springs of the hammers actuate'the same to cause the hammers to strike the firing pins when the said pins are in alinement with the bore through the barrel of the gun. i
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gun. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the rear end thereof with parts in elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional portion of the rear portion of the gun. Fig. 4: is a similar view taken on the line 1-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of one of the hammers and the cooperating parts.
The gun comprises a barrel 1 having a longitudinal bore the said barrel. with a half casing 3. The casing 3 is provided at its lower side with a lug 4, which is pivotally connected with a block 5, turnably mounted upon a base 6. The barrel 1 may be swung vertically upon the block :3, so that a proper trajectory may be had, and the block 5 may be turned upon the base 6, whereby the barrel 1 may be directed in a desired direction.
A cartridge hopper 7 is mounted at one side of the half casing 3 and is adapted to hold anumber of cartridges 8. The hopper 7 is provided with a constricted outlet 9, through which a single row of cartridges 8 only may pass as the cartridges gravitate from the hopper 7. The lower end of the outlet 9 registers with an opening provided in the side of the half casing 3. and the casing 3 is provided at its opposite side with a shell outlet opening 10, shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The barrel 1 is provided at its rear'end and adjacent the half casing3 with an annular shoulder 11, which in turn is provided at its inner side with a series of sockets 12. Shafts 13 and 14 are journaled at their forward ends in the sockets 12, and the said shafts are provided in the vicinity of their forward ends with annular grooves 15, which receive the inner ends of screws 16 2 of suitable diameter, and 5 provided at its rear end threaded through the outer portions of the barrel 1, as best shown in Fig. of the draw with ings T he disks 17 and 18 are provided at their' peripheries with semi-cartridge chambers 19, and when the chambers in one .disk are brought into register with the chambers of the other diskgthey constitute complete cartridge chambers.
A half casing 20 is connected with the half casing 3 by means of bolts 21 or' other suitable securing devices, and the said half casing 20 is provided at its rear side with bearings 22. A shaft 23 is journaled in the bearings 22 and carries-at its upper end a beveled pinion 24 which meshes with a similar pinion 25 carried at the rear end of the shaft 13. The disk 18 is provided at its rear edge anoutstanding annular abutment flange 26, having in the vicinity of its periphery a series of sockets 27.'-The centers of the sockets 27 are positioned at the centers of the cartridge chambers of the disk 18, and spring pressed pins 28 are mounted in the sockets 27. Spring pressed hammers 29 are pivotally mounted upon the rear side of the disk 18 and the said hammers are provided at their inner ends with journaled rollers 30. A hub 31 is integrally joined with the rear end of the disk 18 and the said hub carries a star wheel 32. A beveled pinion 33 is formed upon the rear end of the at one side a recess hub 31 and meshes with a similar pinion 34 carried at the lower end of the shaft 23. An arm 35 is carried at the side of the half casing 20 and the said arm is provided at its inner end with a cam surface 36, located in the path of movement of the rollers 30 carried at the inner ends of the hammers 29.
A shaft 37 is journaled in the half casing 20 and is provided at its outer end with a crank handle 38. The said shaft 37 carries at its inner or forward end a disk 39, havin 40, through which'the points of the star wheel 32 may swing when the shaft 37 is rotated. The disk 39 is further provided with an arm 41, carrying a pin 12, upon which a roller -43 is journa ed.
The disk 39 is so arranged with relation to the star wheel 32 that the periphery of the said disk bears against the edge of the wheel between the points as the said wheel 32 is provided at its points with recesses 44, the pin 42' and roller 43 may enter the said recesses and the recess 40 of the disk 39 arrives at thepoints of the star wheel 32, whereby the said star wheel is partially rotated. During the turning movement of the said star wheel the said shaft 14 is turned, and through the beveled pinions 33 and 34 turning movement is im parted to the shaft 23, and from the said shaft a similar movement is imparted through the beveled pinions 24-and 25 to the shaft 13. Consequently, the shafts l3 and 14 rotate or turn simultaneously in opposite directions, and inasmuch '18 are fixedly mounted as the disks 1; and
thereof, and inasmuch uponthe shafts 13 chambers 19 of the disk 18 pass by the lower end of the upper outlet 9, they receive cartrldges 8 from the said hopper outlet and these are carried up and during the turning movement of the disks 17 thgupper portions ofthe cartridges are recei ed in the chainbers 19 of the disk 17. and the cartridge is brought to a firing position at tlm'nd of the bore 2 of the barrel as shown in Fig. 3of the drawings. During the turning move-' ment of the disk 18 the hammers- 29 are carried along past the arm 35 and as the rollers 30 of the hammers encounter the cam face 36 of the said arm, the said hammers are successively swung against the tension of their actuating springs, and when each roller passes beyond the end of the cam face 36 the hammer swings in. response to its actuating spring, whereby the outer end of the hammer is brought forcedly against the inis projected in a forward direction against the center of the shell of the cartridge 18 which is in position at the inner-end of the bore 2 ofthe barrel, and the cartridge is exploded and its projectile is propelled through the bore 2 of the barrel. On continued turning movementof the disk 18 th empty cartridge shell is carried around and down to the outlet opening 10 in the casing half 3 through which it"may fall and thus the empty cartridge shell is disposed of and the firing of the cartridge may be accomplished in a continuous manner.
From the above description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that a magazine gun of simple and durablev structure is provided and that the same may be easily and quickly operated for the purpose of firing cartridges of comparatively large caliber and that the feeding of the cartridges to the bore of the gun barrel and firing of the same is accomplished in an automaticmannen- Having described theinvention what is claimed is 1.
