REVOLVER.
APPLIGATION FILED MABjso, 1909.
Patented Dec. 21, 1909.
iran sa @FICE THOMAS 1VI. DU BOSE, OF HATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI.
REVOLVER.
Patented Dec. 21, 1909. Serial No. 486,662.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. DU Bosn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hattiesburg, in the county of Forest and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Revolver, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to increase the capacity of the revolver as regards the number of shots which may be fired without reloading.
The invention also has for its object to provide a tiring mechanism which is adjustable so that two shots may be fired simultaneously.
`W ith the foregoing objects in view, the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the drawing hereto annexed forming a part of this specification, in which drawings- Figure 1 is an elevation of a revolver constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is an end view of the cylinder. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail of the adjustable firing mechanism hereinafter referred to.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 denotes the frame of the revolver; 6, the handle; 7, the cylinder; and 8 and 9, respectively, the barrels. Two barrels are provided, and the cylinder has two sets of cartridge chambers indicated at 10 and 11, said chambers being arranged in concentric circles, and adapted to register respectively with the barrels.
The shell extractor is a disk 12 having a circular series of openings 13 corresponding to and registering with the chambers 11, and in the periphery of the disk are semi-circular notches 14 corresponding to and registering with the chambers 10. The disk 12 is operated by a tubular rod 15 passing centrally through the cylinder. Through the rod passes a spindle 16 which is supported at its inner end in a bearing opening in the breech wall 17, whereby the cylinder is rotatably mounted in proper position behind the barrel.
Any suitable mechanism may be provided for rotating the cylinder and for locking the same in firing position, such mechanism being immaterial to, and forming no part of the present invention.
The revolver is provided with a single hammer 1S which is pivoted within the chamber of the frame, and which operates, in conjunction with the mechanism to be presently described, to tire one of the barrels, or both barrels, simultaneously. The hammer may be actuated by the usual mechanism employed for this purpose, and as such actuating means forms no part of this invention, a description thereof is thought unnecessary. It may be stated, however, that any one of the various actuating means employed in different makes of revolvers, may be used. The only change in the hammer structure is the shape of its striking face, said face having a striker 19 located so as to directly engage the shells contained in the chambers 10, and a second striker 2O located to operate a firing pin 2l engageable with the shells contained in the chambers 11.
The firing pin 21 is carried by a block 22 which is slidably mounted between the side plates of the frame, immediately behind the breech wall 17. From one side of the block projects a pin 23 which extends through a slot 24 in one of the walls of the frame, to the outside thereof, by which pin the block may be manipulated to bring the firing pin into and out of alinement with the chambers 11. One end of the block carries flat springs 25 which engage the adjacent wall of the frame, and serve to bind the block between the walls so that it will work tight, and maintain its position. The outer end of the pin is provided with a button 26 to facilitate its manipulation. Upon sliding the block 22 upwardly so that the firing pin 21 is in alinement with the chambers 11, said chambers, and also the chambers 10, will be fired ott upon the descent of the hammer, and when the block is slid downwardly out of the way of the striker 20, the chamber 10 only will be fired off. The capacity of the revolver as regards the number of shots which may be fired without reloading is therefore increased, and it is also possible to tire two shots simultaneously. The mechanism herein described whereby this result is attained, is simple, and a revolver provided with the same, may be manufactured with no great increase in the cost thereof. The two sets of cartridge chambers may be of different calibers.
What is claimed is:
1. In a revolver, a pair of barrels, a cylinder having two sets of cartridge chambers registering respectively with the barrels, a sliding block mounted in the stock, and
carrying a firing pin, means for moving said block to aline the firing pin With one set of cartridge Chambers, a hammer for the other set of cartridge chambers, and means on the hammer for actuating the firing pin When in alinement With its set of cartridge chambers.
2. In a revolver, a stock having a slot in one of its side Walls, a pair of barrels, a cylinder having two sets of cartridge chambers registering respectively with the barrels, a sliding block mounted in the stock, and carrying a ring pin7 a pin carried by the block and projecting through the aforesaid
