T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERNT A. NELSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, resident of Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Power-Drills; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is an end View of the invention as applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 1, with the drill in full raised position, and in partially raised position in dottedlines. Fig. 4 is a side view of the invention with parts broken away, one rail being shown in section. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5, Fig. 4.
The invention has relation to power drills, designed mainly for use in railroad block signal construction work, in boring small holes for the wires making connection with the rails.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the carrying frame, consisting usually of bars 4, 4, arranged rectangularly, the inner bar 4 having at its ends pivotal hearings in brackets 5, 5, carried by one end of a hand car 6. the outer and parallel bar 4 having a plane lateral or bottom surface designed to rest fiatwise against the top of the rail, said outer bar having a downturned end 7, having contact with one side of the rail, to brace the carrying frame against the strain of the drills when at work.
The drill frame proper, 7 is usually bolted to the outer bar 4 of the carrying frame, as at 8. and is provided with depending portions 9, 9, wherein the drill shafts 10, 10 have rotary and sliding bearings. The two drill shafts are provided with end gears 11, 11, having engagement with opposite sides of a central long spur gear 12, upon a short drive shaft 13 located at one end of the drill frame, the opposite ends of the drill shafts having heads 14, 14, wherein the drills 15, 15 are removably seated in the usual manner. frame at 24, and has at its lower end connection with the drill shafts, through the medium of links 16 having outturned ends 17 with which the lower branched end 18 of the hand lever is pivotally engaged, said links having at their outer ends eyes 19, engaging end studs 20 of a cross head 21, connecting the drill shafts, said shafts having each collars 22 upon opposite sides of the cross head, so that when the lever is operated the drill shafts will have a balanced strain exerted thereupon to move or slide them endwise, simultaneously, toward or away from the rail web in which the holes are to be bored.
Power connection is made with a motor 22 upon the hand car, by suitable means, usually a chain drive 26, leading from said motor to a sprocket wheel 27 upon the inner bar of the carrying frame, a second sprocket wheel 27, upon said bar, turning with the first named wheel and having a chain drive 28 with a sprocket wheel 29 upon the drive shaft 13.
When the drill is being moved from one hole that has been drilled to the next hole to be drilled, the carrying frame and drill are raised, upon the inner bar of said frame as a center. by suitable means, usuallv a hand lever 30, having a connecting rod 31 with a bell crank lever 32, said bell crank lever having an open-top seat 33 at the end of its forward arm, engaging releasably with an eye 34 at the top of an upright arm 34 of the frame. In this way, when the drill frame and drill have been raised until the rails are cleared, they may be held in this position by engagement of a pawl 35 of the lever with the teeth of its rack 36. the hand car being then moved to the location of the next hole to be drilled, and the frame and drill lowered into operative position, the outer bar of the carrying frame resting upon the rails, the clutch being thrown in to start the drills and the hand lever operated to bring the drills against the web of the rail.
. When the drill is to be transported for longer distances. it is desirable that the heavy frame and drill shall be raised over the hand car until they are nearer in line with the center of gravity of the car, this being accomplished by raising the frame and drill, by hand or otherwise (the engagement of the bell crank lever with the upright 34 being first released), until the drill and frame come to rest against a suitable stop, as the operators seat 37, upon the hand car.
In the use of this drill, two holes are bored at the same time, and the drills are gaged to work at the proper distance from the top of the rail and at the proper distance apart.
What I claim is:
1. A power drill for railway rails, comprising a support, a carrying frame pivoted at one end thereof to said support and adapted at its other end to rest upon the rails, a drill frame mounted upon said carrying frame, a drive shaft having bearings in said drill frame and provided with a long spur gear, drill shafts having bearings in said drill frame and provided with spur gears in mesh with opposite sides of said long gear, and an operating lever parallel with said drill frame and having link connection with said drill shafts to move the same with relation to the rail, said carrying frame and the parts supported thereby being adapted to be pivotally raised and held in raised position.
2. A power drill for railway rails, comprising a support, a carrying frame pivoted at one end thereof .to said support and adapted at its other end to rest upon the rails, a drill frame mounted upon said carrying frame, a drive shaft having bearings in said drill frame and provided with a long spur gear, drill shafts having bearings in said drill frame and provided with spur gears in mesh with opposite sides of said long gear and with a cross head connecting the shafts, an operating lever parallel with and fulcrumed to said drill frame and having a branched lower end, and links having outturned ends engaging the branched ends of said lever and eyes at their other ends engaging said cross head, said carrying frame and the parts supported thereby being adapted to be pivotally raised and held in raised position. i
3. A power drill for railway rails, comprising a support, a rectangular carrying frame adapted to rest upon the rails and the inner end of which has pivotal engagement with said support, a drill frame carried by and parallel with the outer end of said carrying frame, a drive shaft having bearings in said drill frame and provided with a long spur gear, drill shafts having bearings in said drill frame and provided with spur gears in mesh with opposite sides of said long gear and with a cross head connecting said shafts, an operating lever parallel with and fulerumed to said drill frame and having a branched lower end, and links having outturned ends engaging said cross head, said carrying frame and the parts supported thereby being adapted to be pivot-ally raised and held in raised position.
4. In a power drill for railway rails, a hand car, a motor upon said car, a carrying frame pivoted at its rear end to said car and being at its other end adapted to rest upon the rails, a drill frame mounted upon said carrying frame, drill shafts having hearings in said drill frame, means for moving the drill shafts toward and away from the rail, means for turning said drill shafts, including an operating shaft having a jointed drive connection with the motor shaft, and means for raising and holding the drill frame clear of the rails, including a releasable support, said drill frame being adapted to be swung upon its pivot into full raised position from said releasable support.
5. In a power drill for railway rails, a hand car, a carrying frame pivoted at its rear end to said car and having at said end a transverse shaft provided with sprocket wheels, said frame being at its other end adapted to rest upon the rails, a drill frame mounted upon said carrying frame, drill shafts having bearings in said drill frame, means for moving the drill shafts toward and away from the rail, an operating shaft having drive connection with said drill shafts and a sprocket wheel, a chain connecting the sprocket wheels of the operating shaft and a sprocket wheel of the transverse shaft, a motor upon the hand car, a sprocket wheel upon the motor shaft, a chain connecting said last named sprocket wheel with the other sprocket wheel of the transverse shaft, a bell crank lever upon the carrying frame having a releasable connection with the drill frame, a hand lever haw'ing connection with said bell crank lever to raise and hold the drill frame clear of the rails, said drill frame being adapted to be raised from engagement with said bell crank lever to full raised position over the hand car.
