1o all cto/tom it' may Concern Be it known that l, PETER J. QUINLAN, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Marietta, in the county ot' Washington and State of UhiO, have invented a new and useful tirasurner, of which the following is a speciiication. n
The device forming the subject matter oit this application is a burner adapted to be employed tor use in connection with gas and air, to produce a Bunsen effect.
The invention aims to improve the con struction et the burner casing and its tubes, to provide novel means whereby the iiow oi: air may be regulated, and to provide a novel means whereby the burner may be assembled with a furnace and boiler structure.
1t is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility ot devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
lilith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details oi" construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing z-Figure 1 shows the invention in side elevation,parts being broken away; Fig. 2 is a top plan; Fig. 3 is a cross section; Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation showing the device forming the subject matter of this application assembled with a `furnace and a boiler.
1n carrying out the present invention there is provided a box-like casing 1 comprising a bottom 2, sides 3, ends 1, a closure having gas outlets 6, a top 7 spaced from the closure 5 to deiine a compartment 14, the ends 4 being extended as shown at 8 into engagement with the top 7 and ribs 9 being employed for connecting vthe closure 5 with the top 7 at intervals, thereby todetine side air inlets 25.
Assembled with the top 7 are burner tubes 10 connected by webs 11, the tubes 10 preterably being disposed coaxially with respect to the gas outlets 6. As indicated at 12, the lower ends of the burner tubes 10 may project downwardly into the compartment 14. The ends 4 ot' the casing 1 may be proyided with gas inlets 15, and the bottom 2 may be provided with a gas inlet 16 preferably lccated midway between vthe ends ot the casing 1. It is to be understood that all of the gasinlets and 16 may be used at once, or one or more of them may be employed, the remaining of the inlets being closed in any suitable manner.
In practical operation, gas is delivered into the casing 1 through the inlets 15 or 16, the gas passing upwardly through the outlets 6 and traversing the tubes 10, at the upper ends of which the gas is ignited. Air
passes inwardly into the compartment le through the side inlets and mingles with the gas in proper proportions betere the mixture thus produced enters the tubes l0 at the upper ends oi which the gas is ignited.
1n Fig. l oi' the drawings there is shown a casing 17 supporting a boiler 18, the combustion space being indicated at 19 and a grate 2O being shown, the grate 2O serving to separate the combustion space 19 from the ash pit 21. rl `he products of combustion pass through a stack 22. No novelty is claimed for the construction last above described, saving in so far 'as it may enter into combination with elements hereinbetore described and to be described hereinafter.
Mounted in the stack 22 is a damper 23 controlled by any suitable means indicated at 24.
In practical operation one or more oi the structures shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are placed beneath the grate 20, the burner tubes 10 projecting upwardly between the bars ot the grate 20. A closure is placed upon the grate, and thus air is prevented from drawing upwardly through the grate, independently of the burner tubes. By manipulating the damper 23, the draft through the burner tubes 10 may be adjusted, and in this manner, the amount of air applied may be regulated to a nicety. lt is to be observed that in order to convert an ordinary coal burning furnace into a gas burning structure, no changes in the furnace are required. 'lhe burner tubes 10 are extended upwardly between the constituent parts of the grate 2O and the closure 35 is mounted in place on the grate bars. rl`he furnace, therefore, may be readily converted from a coal burning structure into a gas burning structure, and with equal facility be reconverted from a gas burning structure into a coal. burning oneo The structure forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be used primarily under a low gas pressure, and it is so constructed that even with a low pressure, a perfect combustion will be effected.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is :-V
In a device of the class described, a boxlile casing including a closure; a top spaced from the closure; end walls uniting the top with the closure; and a line of burner tubes opening through the top, the closure having openings disposed below the burner tubes; the device being characterized by the fact i, that the eXtreme tubes of the line are disposed close to the end walls thereby to give the line a maximum length, that both ends of the casing and the intermediate portion thereof are provided with gas inlet openings Copies of this patent may be obtained for thus securing an adequate and even supply of gas to the said extreme end tubes and to the inner tubes, that the lower ends of the tubes extend downwardly below the lower face of the top to receive gas from the openings in the closure, that the entire upper surface of the closure lies in a common plane thus to facilitate a draft of air through the downwardly extended ends of the tubes, and that supporting lugs connect the top and the closure intermediate the end walls, and at the sides of the casing.
