Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1915.
Application led August 22, 1914. Serial No. 858,065.
To all 'whom it mayV concern Be it known that I, HERMANN SELTMANN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottstown, in thecounty of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Junior Foot-Rests, of which the following isa specification.
v Thisinvention is an improved foot rest for use in connection with a shoe shining chair and stands to support the foot of a child or small person when shining his shoes, the object ofthe invention being to provide a junior foot rest which may be readily applied to and removed from a shoe polishing stand to accommodate a child and enable his shoes to be polished as readily as those of a grown person.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a junior foot rest illustrating an embodiment of my invention and showing same arranged for use in con nection with the foot rests and platform of a shoe shining seat or chair. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail plan of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Figs. 5-6 are detail transverse sectional views on the planes indicated respectively by the lines aa and 6 6 of Fig. 3.
For the purposes of this specification a chair such as used in shining` shoes is indicated at 1, its step platform at 2 and the usual stands or foot rests for the feet of grown up people are indicated at 3.
My improved foot rest is indicated, in one embodiment thereof, at 4 and is provided with a supporting tripod 5 which comprises a rear arm 6 the lower end of which is adapted to rest in the angle between the steps of the platform and a pair of side arms 7*-8 which are respectively adapted to rest at their lower ends on the foot rests 3.
The plate 9 of the foot rest is of the general YShape of the bottom of a shoe and is here shown as provided at a point a suitable distance from its heel or rear end with a supporting fork 10 which is extended upwardly from the tripod 5. On the under side of the plate 9 is a centrally and longitudinally arranged guide and housing 11 in which longitudinally extending bars 12-13 are slidably mounted which on account of their position beneath the plate 9 will be termed toe and heel bars. The toe bar is provided with a pair of clamps 14 to engage the sole, at the toe, and these clamps are pivotally connected to the bolt 12 as at 15. IThe heel bar 13 is here shown as provided with a pair of integral or rigid heel clamps 16.l The heel bar is also provided with a lug 17 which extends downwardly therefrom. The toe bar 12 has a downwardly extending handle 18. A. coiled spring 19 has its ends attached to the lug and handle and saidspring exerts its tension to draw the toe and heel bar toward each other. On the upper side of the plate 9, at a suitable distance from its rear end is a shoulder or stop 20 to engage the front side of the heel.
It will be understood from the foregoing that the improved junior foot rest may be readily used in connection with the ordinary foot rest of a shoe shining chair or stand to accommodate a child or small person and may be used for either one or both feet.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A foot rest of the class described having a plate conforming substantially to the shape of the shoe, a housing secured to the under side of said plate and providing a guideway, bars loosely mounted in the guideway and extending beyond the same at op posite ends thereof, shoe clamping members carried by the projecting ends of said bars, depending lugs formed integral with said bars and arranged adjacent the shoe clamping members, a spring terminally connected with said lug to cause the same to Contact with the ends of the housing and limit the movement of the bars in one direction, an extension on one of the said lugs providing a handle whereby one ofthe may be slid longitudinally of the housing against the iniiuence angle between the stepsof the stand distant of ,the spring. from the foot rest thereon. v 10V 2.
