TACK-DRIVER.
Specification of Letters Yatent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1915.
Application filed May 7, 1915. Serial No. 28,588.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VERNON GOODING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olarksburg, in the county of Harrison and State of W est Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tack-Drivers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improve ments in tack driving devices.
In carrying out my invention I propose to provide a tack driver including a plunger of some suitable magnetized material which will attract a tack, the device being provided with a reciprocatory handle having a contact or hammer member therein which engages with the plunger to force the same in one direction to cause the tack to be driven home.
Another object of the invention is to construct a device of this character which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity in construction, cheapness in manufacture and thorough efliciency in operation.
lVith the above and other objects in View, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure l is a perspective view of a tack driver constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
My improved tack driver is broadly indicated by the numeral 1 and includes a hollow handle 2, the same having its outer end closed, as at 3. Secured to the closed end 3 and extending centrally through the hollow handle 2 and projecting through the open end thereof is a hammer head 4, the same being in the nature of a rod which is round in cross section and the portion of the rod projecting through the closed end 3 of the handle 2 is offset and curved and has its end bifurcated to provide a claw 5, the said claw being employed for withdrawing tacks in the usual manner.
The bore of the hollow handle 2 at diametrically opposite points is provided with longitudinally extending grooves 6, to re ceive oppositely disposed lugs 7 provided upon a sleeve 8. The sleeve is formed with a reduced tubular extension 9, the same bemg arranged at its end opposite that provided with the lug 7, the hammer head 4 bemg arranged within the sleeve 8.
Disposed within the tube 9 and snugly engaged the inner bore thereof is a plunger 10, the said plunger having its inner end provided with a head and with offset members 11 which receive one end of a helical spring 12, the opposite end of said spring resting upon the shouldered end of the sleeve 8 at the juncture of the tube 9 therewith. The spring 12 normally elevates the plunger 10 to bring its end within the tube away from the open mouth of the tube, and the said plunger is in the nature of a magnet which will attract the tack and and draw the same within the tube 9 so that the said tack may be readily driven home when the device is operated. By moving the handle longitudinally of the sleeve 8, and with suiiicient force, the hammer at will be brought into contact with the inner end of the plunger 10, forcing the said plunger against the tension of the spring 12 outwardly of the tube 9, and as a consequence drive the tack home.
From the above description, taken in con nection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In a device for the purpose set forth, a hollow handle, a sleeve within the handle, guide members for the sleeve, said sleeve terminating in a reduced tubular extension, a plunger of magnetized material within the tubular extension, spring means for normally forcing one end of the plunger away from the end of the tubular extension and within the sleeve, and a hammer member carried by the handle and passing through the sleeve and disposed in alinement with the plunger, all as and for the purpose set forth.
