To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. DoDDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zelienople, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bolts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription, reference being had to the accoinpanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side elevation of one form of blank from which the bolt can be formed; Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the blank shown in Fig. 1, after it has passed through the first step of the process for making the bolt; Fig. 4 is a sectional view through Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the bolt after it has passed through the second step; Fig. 6 is a sectional view of Fig. 5; Fig.7 is a side elevation partially in section of a finished bolt before it has been twisted; Fig. 8 is a side elevation of a finished bolt; Figs. 9, l0 and 11 are side elevations of modified forms of bolts.
This invention relates to an improvement in bolts, and particularly to bolts which are subjected to strains which will cause them to crystallize or elongate, and is especially designed to provide an efiicient stay-bolt for boilers.
The precise nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be made in the details of construction and operation of the various parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, 2 designates the heads of the bolt, shown in Figs. 7 and 8, which may be screw-threaded in the usual manner, and connected integrally with these heads 2 are body members 3, 3, which extend from head to head, these body members being separated their entire length. Seated within the separator portion is a spacer, which may be formed of any hard lubricating material, such as asbestos, graphite or asbestos filled with graphite, or any other material which can readily be twisted around the axis of the bolt, and which will withstand a high temperature and permit the two bodies 8, 8, to flex or move with relation to each other. This bolt can be made by various methods, but I prefer to take a blank, such as shown in Fig. l, pierce or spread the central portion thereof, as shown in Fig. 8, and after the members have been spread apart, insert the filler piece, and then close up the opening to bring the members 3 in contact with the filler piece. The bolt can then be finished in any desired manner, either by twisting and then upsetting and threading the heads, or by threading, upsetting and threading the heads, and then spacing the body members about the longitudinal axis of the bolt.
In Fig. 9, I have shown an ordinary track bolt having its two body members connected to each other at the threaded end 7 and at the head 8. In Fig. 10, I have shown a track bolt in which the members are separated from a point adjacent to the head 8 and the other end of the bolt, while in Fig. 11, I have shown a structure in which the members are connected to each other at the threaded end 7 and are separated throughout the body portion and the head 8*. In bolts of this character, I also insert a separator, but this has been shown as formed of very light material.
The advantages of my invention result from the provision of a bolt having a plurality of members in at least the body portion thereof and twisted about the axis of the bolt, which are separated from each other by means of a filler piece of anti-friction material, which will permit one member to move relatively to the other.
I claim:
1. A bolt having two members connected to each other at one end, and a filler piece of anti-friction material between said members, substantially as described.
2. A bolt having two members connected to each other at one end, and twisted about the longitudinal axis of the bolt, said members being separated from each other by means of a filler piece of anti-friction material, substantially as described.
3. A stay-bolt having an integral head at each end, a plurality of members extending from head to head and formed integral therewith, said members being twisted about the longitudinal axis of the bolt, and a filler of lubricating material between said mempiece of anti-friction material between said bers, substantially as described. 10 members, substantially as described.
