Description

JOSEPH A. FRAUENHEIM, OF ZEIIENOPLE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO KERNER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION y OF PENNSYLVANIA.
METHOD OF MAKING COMPOUND BOLIS.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.. I3, Itllll.
Application Vfiled August 27, 1914:. Serial No. 858,810.
To all whom it may concern A Be it known that I, .IosnPI-I A. FRAUEN HEIM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Zelienople, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Methods of Making Compound Bolts, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the blanks from which my bolt is formed. Fig. Q is a perspective view of the blanks after they have been twisted. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one form of bolt after it has been twisted and heated. Fig. I is a similar View of a linished bolt, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a finished bolt of another form.
This invention relates to an improved method of making bolts having a plurality of members.
I he precise nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which will now be described, it being premised, however, that changes may be made in the steps of the manufacture, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings, the reference numeral 2 designates the two members from which a bolt is formed. I prefer to take two semicylindrical pieces, such as shown in Fig. l, place them in position and then twist them about the longitudinal aXis of the bolt, as shown in Fig. 2. This twisting may be done in any desired way, but I prefer to heat the blanks, and then grasp the ends of the blanks and twist them about the aXis of the bolt. After the members have been twisted, I upset one end of the bolt to form head members 3-3, as shown in Fig. 3, and afterward thread the other end, as indicated at 4 in Fig. 4.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a bolt in which both ends of the body member have been threaded.
The advantages of my invention result from the provision of a method of making a bolt having a plurality of separate members which are twisted about the longitudinal axis of the bolt, and in which the securing means on the ends of the bolt will not be distorted.
I claim:
l. 'Ihe method of manufacturing bolts having a pluralityof separate members, comprising the step of twisting the separate members about the longitudinal axis of the bolt, and then simultaneously forming securing means on the ends of the separate members at one end of the bolt.
2. The method of manufacturing bolts having two separate members, comprising the step of twisting the two members about the longitudinal axis of the bolt, then simultaneously upsetting head portions on the ends of said members at one end of the bolt, and then simultaneously forming screw threads on the other ends of the separate members.
3. The method of manufacturing bolts having a plurality of separate members, comprising the step of heating said members, then twisting said members about the longitudinal axis of the bolt, and then forming securing devices on the ends of said members.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
JOSEPH A. FRAUENI-IEIM. lvVitnesses:
