To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES V. FISHER, citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in harness, and more particularly to a specially devised hook adapted to be used as a'checkrein fastening device.
The primary object'of the invention contemplates the provision of a simple and inexpensive harness hook or device wherein means is provided for detachably fastening the check-rein to the saddle in such a novel and peculiar manner as to permit an unfastening of the former by simply swinging the attaching hook and its retaining element upon the pivotal support provided therefor, the retaining element being swung or moved until the said hook registers or is alined with a peculiarly shaped cut out portion,
formed within a detachable supporting bracket carried by the saddle, whereupon the said hook is laterally slid untilentirely free of the retaining element, thisoperation effecting a convenient and reliable checkrein hook capable of being manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a concentrically pivoted cam within which thehook member is normally retained, the latter having a projection or tongue adapted to fit into a cut out portion formed within the said cam, wherein it is retained against accidental removal by the bracket or support upon which the cam. is pivoted.
A still further object of the invention contemplates the provision of check-rein fastening means of such simple construction as to be readily attached to any of, the well known harness saddles now in use, the arrangement comprising the invention permitting the check-rein to be quickly detached from the retaining means as occasion demands.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by-such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodimentin the accompanying drawings, described in the'following specification and then .more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the fastening device; Fig. 3 is an end view; Fig. i is a section on line 44 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is an end View, partly broken away, the hook member being positioned ready for removal or detachment from the retaining means.
Before proceeding with the description of the drawings, I desire to call particular attention to the fact that while I have evolved my invention with particular reference to its application as a check-rein fastening device, the same may be readily utilized as a trace hook, or for any other purpose susceptible of its application.
Referring now to the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention the numeral 1 designates a harness saddle of the ordinary type and 2 an ordinary form of check-rein.
Detachably secured to the saddle '1 by v 2 means of an eXteriorly threaded shank or stem 3 is the supporting bracket 4 of the fastening device, the lower face of which is concaved as at 5 to conform to the curvature or outline of the saddle 1, the said bracket ofa tongue 11 formed integrally with and projecting from one edge of the hook member 12, the latter being secured in any su1table manner to the check-rein 2 in connection with which the invention is employed. The
ca-m' or retaining element 7 islikewise provided with a longltudinally extending cut out portion or recess 13 likewise having an opening or passage way 1% leading thereinto 11o from-one 'faceof the cam, the said passage way being formed adjacent an enlargement shank 15 of the cam member, the purpose of which will be hereinafter fully- 'idescribed. By swinging the retaining element 7 until the enlargement 15 engages the base of the supporting bracket 4c as is clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the longitudinally extending groove 13 and the cut out portion 9 of the bracket side are alined or so positioned as to register one with the other, in which position the integrally formed tongue or projection 11 of the hook member 12 is free to be inserted into the groove 13 through the said out out portion, the length of the extension or'tongue being approximately the same as that of the groove so as to fit entir'ely within the same and allow the retaining element or cam to be swung freely upon its pivot pin 8. After inserting the hook member as above described, the latter having the check-rein attached thereto, the retaining element is swung upon its pivot drawing the enlargement 15 of the cam out of engagement with the base of the supporting bracket at until the hook member 12 extends forwardly from the supporting bracket or upon thesame plane as the check-rein 2 Where it is held in fastened positionwithin the bracket and retaining element by the pressure brought to bear upon the, checkreinr As thehook member and retaining element are swung upon the pivot provided therefor the groove 13 is thrown out of alinement with the 'cut out portion 9' of the bracket side, this movement of the retaining element locking the hook member therein yet permitting the said member to be freely moved without danger of accidental removal or unlocking of the said hook member.
By fastening ,a supporting bracket constructed as'above described to each end of a swingletree and securing the harness traces to the hook members provided therefor it will be seen that the said traces may be detachably secured to the swingletree in a like manner to that described for securing or fastening the check-rein of the harness.
It will be seen from the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that by disposing the cut out portion 9 of .the bracket side toward the rear of the bracket the hook member cannot be withdrawn from the cam or retaining element without first swinging the latter upon its pivot until the groove formed therein registers with the said out out portion; that the enlargement 10 of the retaining elementwhen swung into engagement with the lower face of the supporting bracket alines the said groove and the said out out portion, thus permltting the hook member to be removed or inserted within the groove as desired; and that the provision of the threaded depending from the secured to the harness saddle 1 in connection purpose set forth. supporting a bracket the entire .devlce may be .detachably with which the check-rein fastening device comprising my invention is used.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, 1s
, the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. A harness attachment including a sub stantially U-shaped supporting bracket, a grooved retaining element mounted for rotation between the extensions of said bracket. one of said extensions having a slot adapted for registration with said groove, and a hook member having an extension adapted to fit the saidgroove, the rotation of the said element adapted to lock the said hook member, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A harness attachment including a supporting bracket having extensions formed thereupon, a grooved retaining element mounted for rotation between said extensions, one of said extensions having a slot formed therein, an enlargement formed upon the said retaining element adapted for engagement with the said bracketto aline the said groove with the said slot, and a hook member having an extension formed integrally therewith, said extension adapted to fit the said groove of the said retaining element, the rotation of the latter adapted to lock the said hook ,member with the said retaining element, as and for the purpose slot formed therein, a grooved cam-shaped retaining element mounted for rotation between said extensions, the said element being adapted for engagement with the said bracket vto aline the saidigroove with the said slot, a hook member, and an extension formed integrally therewith, the said extenslon being shaped similarly to the said slot and the said groove, the said extension adapted to slide laterally through the said slot and into the said groove, the latter bea ing in registration, the rotation of thesaid element adapted to automatically lock the said hook member thereto, as and for the 4. harness attachment including a sub stantlally U-shaped supporting bracket, a retaimng element mounted for rotation between the sides of the said bracket, an enlargement formed upon the said retaining element adapted for engagement with the base of the said bracket, the said retaining element having a groove formed therein, one of the said sides of the bracket having a slot formed therein, the said slot and the said groove adapted to be alined during engagement of the said enlargement with the base of the said bracket, and a hook member having an extension adapted to fit the said groove, the rotation of the said element adapted to disaline the said groove with the said slot and to lock the said extension within the said groove, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination with a U-shaped bracket of a retaining member formed with a T-shaped groove and mounted for rotation between the sides of said bracket, one of which Sides is provided with a T-shaped slot for registration With said groove, upon proper movement of said retaining member,
to maintain said enlargement against lat-' eral displacement by said bracket sides and against longitudinal displacement by said groove.
