PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED BODEN, OF MUMFORD, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,355, dated June 27, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED RoDEN, of Mumford, in the county of Talladega and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Plow; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and Vuse the same, referelice being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure l represents a side view of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail back view of a standard and shovel.

My invention consists in improved means of adjusting and holding the plow, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claim. p
The frame consists ofthe pole A, cross-bars B B, and side bars C. The cross-bars are, by bolts a b, pivoted to the pole so that they can swing thereon in any desired direction. The ends of the cross-bars are slotted and receive bolts c c, that project from the ends of the side bars C, which latter can, therefore, be adjusted nearer to or further away from the pole, to set the plow- D D are slotted braces extending diagonally from the bolt a, to the rear bolts c, for the purpose of aiding to retain the parts in the desired position. The slots inthe braces permit them to follow the lateral and longitudinal adjustment of the bars C. EE are the hands. Their lower front ends are secured by the bar a, while in rear they are secured to a cross-bar, d., which is vertically adjustable in and held by slotted arms c c, which extend from the pole or rear cross-bar, as shown. The handles can, therefore, be set higher or lower to suit the height of the man using them. rlhe plow-standards F F are secured to the inner faces of the side bars or bealns C. They are made in form of metal plates forked at the upper ends toobtain a double fastening on the beams. To the lower part of each standard is on the outer side of the same, secured a block, made of wood or other suitable material, its face being curved or shaped so that it will conveniently receive the plowshare H. The outer side of each block is held by a brace, I, which is suspended from the beam C. The lower end of the brace is let into the block G to prevent the same from turning, as it is or may be secured by only one bolt7 j'. 'The plowshare or shovel is or may also be secured by but one bolt, g, and can have one side notched to tit against the face of the standard to be kept from turning. For ordinary shovels, sweeps, or straight shares, a wedge-shaped plate, lz', may be 'interposed between the share and the block G, I
with a lip, f1', projecting over the top edge of said share to keep the same from turning. .The vplate L is slotted and straddles the bolt g. The standards and braces areperforated at their upper ends to be vertically adjustable 011 the beams G. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- -The combination, with a plow, H, of independent block G, standard-plate F, and side brace I, to hold the shovel H firmly in the position Irequired.
