Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7,131
Application filed December 22, 1914. Serial No. 878,532.
I '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I. lrumr @Lrvnno, me-
chanical engineer, a subject of the King of l'taly, residing at cnoa ltaly, have invented a useful Improvement in Car-(Iouplings, of which the Following is a specification. This invention relates to themechanisms for the ai'itomatic coupling of cars, essentially formed of two jaws each of them rotating around a journal. and ot' a link adapted to remain engaged between said jaws by re: son ot the impact or pressure of the latter against the former. well as for the interposition. at the right moment, of a convenient locking member. a I
fLCCOlfdlllg to present invention the above stated rotating jaws are so constructed to remain open on the part designed; to receiv the shock of the lin: and shut on the. part where the interposition of the locking memher is taking place.
By drawing two cars one near to the other, the link carried by one of them actuates the jaws of the other car so as to be drawn together and closed'on the part of the said link, while they will open themselves on the opposite part and in this position will get locked by reason of the interposition, in the latter, of a locking member.
The link is entirely embraced by the jaws, just like a pin connecting rod in its bearing, whereby the coupling is effected.
The locking member is independent from the jaws and exercises itst'unction at the right moment. under the influence, for example of a weight lever, when, under the action of the link, said jaws will open them selves on its side, under the action, too, of said weight lever placed in a convenient position.
The accoi'i'lpanying drawings illustrate, by way of example, one construction of the invention.
In these drawings: Figure 1 shows a longitudinal vertical section of the coupling mechanism in locked position; Fig. 2, is a similar view showing the device in the position while the coupling is taking place; Fig. 3 shows a side elevation partly in section 01" the link which forms one of the parts of the coupling device; Fig. 4 shows a plan view of the arrangement of the pair of coupling mechanisms at the end of the cars;

jaw -l and and 2 is thelink which remains en aged between them. On the drawbar l are firmly secured the two spaced walls 3 between which said-jaws are located, said jaws being pivoted upon the journals The junction of the two walls over the bar 1 realized by means ol b olts 7 and they are kept at the required distance one from the other by band rings 7 placed around said bolts. On. the side of the link the walls 3 are connected, by means of a part. of the bolts '7 themselves, to a cup 8 possessing ears 9. This cup has the object of guiding the link to the center of the jaws l and 5. This opportunity is OllfiIECl in the case of the coexistence of the usual hand coupling mechanisn as well as with the coupling object of the present invention.
By drawing two cars one near torthe other the link 2 guided by the cup 8 will strike or press against the center of the twoj'aws, thereby causing theiropening on the side of the locking member 10. This latter guided by the walls 3 is controlled by the angle levers 1l-l2l3, and this one, in turn, by the forked connecting rod ll operated by the lever 15, running loose on the shaft 18 controlled by the notched sleeve 24 keyed on the shaft 38, and this latter controlled by the lever 20 under the action of a weight or spring 27 guided along the rod 21 or by means'of another convenient arrangement.
When the lever 19 driven by the spring '27 is in the position as represented in Fig. the locking member 10 will press against the jaws, and as soon as these, by reason of the impulsion or shock of the link, have opened themselves to a certain extent, the aforesaid locking member will then insert itself between them causing them to get locked in the position as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the coupling is eiiected.
When it is required to uncouple the cars it is only necessary to bring the lever 19, by means of lever 20, in the position as shown in Fig. 2, thus enabling the sleeve 24, 2% which rotates with the lever itself, to press with its notch against the notch shows a plan viewof the mechanism a of lever 15, thereby exercising an action 1 uponithe angle lever 11i12131by means warranty of working since the weightof the various parts 'contrlbutesto keep the niechanism shut.
Having 'now particularly described and as-V certalned the nature of my sald lnvention' and inwhat manner the same is to be performed,I declare that what I claim is:
1. A car coupling ofthe character de-i scribed comprising in combination jaws pivoted intermediate their ends for movement.
in avertical plane, the pivoted aXis of the upper. jaw; being situated forward of the center of 'gravity'th'ereof, and the pivotal axis of the lower jaw being located to the rear of the center of gravity thereof.
2. In a car coupling of the character described, the combination of two jaws, bearings upon which the jawspivot, the pivoted axisaof the upper jaw being situated forward of the center of gravity thereof and the pivoted aXis of the lower jaw being 10- Gated to the rear of the center of gravity thereof, a link carried by one of the cars adapted to actuate the jaws of the car for closing the same, and a locking member for locking said jaws over said link, the jaws of the other car being adapted to remain open under the action of the gravity. f
3.1L car coupling comprising a pair of pivoted jaws, a link or the like adapted to be engaged by the jaws, said jaws being opv 'erated by the contact of the link so as to engage the link, and means for locking the jaws in the closed position, said jaws tending to remain in an open position under the action of'their own weight.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
