Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,305, dated June 27, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. HALL, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain Improvement in Shields for Shaft-Couplings, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an adjustable shield arranged to cover the projecting portions of shaftcouplings.
The drawing represents a vertical section of my invention.
The shield A is made in cup-form, of sufficient internal diameter to pass over the largest part of the coupling, its solid end being bored out to slide upon the shaft. The set-screw b, the head of which is countersunk in the hub of the shield, retains the latter in the position in which it is placed; or any other suitable device may be used for clamping the shield upon the shaft or coupling.
My invention is designed more particularly for use in connection with the ordinary universal coupling, and it prevents anything from becoming entangled in the coupling, as is often the case where no shield is used. When the shafts are connected together the shield A is pushed along till it covers the coupling and then clamped by the set-screw. If it is desired to uncouple the shafts the shield is slid back far enough to allow the pins to be removed, as shown in dotted lines inthe drawing.
I am aware that a shield has been used formed in one piece with the coupling; but such device is not only cumbersome and expensive, but causes much inconvenience in uncoupling the shaft.
My invention is simple, costs but a triie, and may, moreover, be applied to shafts now in use, while its convenience and readiness of application are obvious.
The shield also operates to retain the couplingpins in place.
What I claim as my invention is- In combination with a shaft having a universaljointed coupling, the shield A, made adjustable longitudinally upon the shaft, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
