LOUIS J'. VAN GUELPEN AND PETER BERNHARDT, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IBURNISHING-MAOHINE.
Application filed November 6, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LoUIs J. VAN GUEL- PEN and PETER BERNHARDT, citizens of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented a new Burnishing-lvlachine, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in burnishing machines in which heat operates in connection with a metal pointed tool or finger, with a slot cut into or attached to the outer extremity of the pointed tool or finger, and the objects of our improvement are: First. To provide a metal tool or finger for application through a slot to the edge of substances upon which burnishing is to be done. Second. To provide a hollow chamber within said metal tool or finger to admit of the introduction of heat units by electricity whereby heat may be applied to said index tool or finger, and third, to so construct the index tool or finger as to admit of same being attached to automatic mechanism so that burnishing the edges of leather, wood, or any naturally compounded or artificially compounded substance or material which admits of burnishing, may be done upon any automatic machine or by any automatic mechanism which will admit of the attachment provided herein. We attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation. Fig. 2 represents a section of Fig. 3 on the line CC. Fig. 3 represents a front elevation. Fig. 4rrepresents a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents an enlarged view of part of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 represents a side elevation of the tool or finger attached to an ordinary sewing machine. Fig. 7 represents a plan view of Fig. 6.
In Fig. l the housing (1) constitutes the framework of the device consisting of a chamber (2) which admits of the heating unit (3) shown in Fig. l and Fig. 3. The housing (1) consists of a piece of tapered Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. "3, 1915.
Serial No. 870,639.
metal carrying at its outer extremity a slot (4) shown in Fig. 1 and the enlarged view Fig. 5.
Fig. 6 shows the tool or finger attached to an ordinary sewing machine and fastened to the arm of the sewing machine (5) by means of the strap (6), and the screws (7-7) on sewing machine (5) and screw (8) on strap (6). The tool or finger is placed in such position as to allow the slot (4) in the tool (1) to be in line with the mechanism feed of sewing machine (5) as shown in Fig. 6. The tool or finger may likewise be attached to many other machines having a feeding device similar or equivalent to that of an ordinary sewing machine, our selection of the sewing machine for illustration being purely arbitrary. No mechanical skill is required to make this attachment.
We are aware that prior to our invention the application of heat to metal substances for burnishing has been made, and we therefore do not claim broadly in this particular, but
We claim 1. A burnishing tool formed as a finger, and having a tapering end portion provided with a slot through which the margin of the material to be burnished may be fed, said finger having a hollow portion to receive electrical heating means for heating said tapering end portion and the walls of the slot therein.
2. The combination of a metal finger or tool having a tapering end portion provided with a slot through which the margin of a piece of material may be fed, o1 means for Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents Washington, D. G.
