MACHINE FOR FORMING CQUNTER-STIFFENERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,420, dated May 13, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GRANVILLE T. SHEP- LEY, of West Groton. in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Atto John R. Moflitt, and more fully described in Letters Patent No. 178,869, dated June 20, 1876; and it consists of an attachment, hereinafter more fully described, adapted to be secured to the rolling mechanism of said machine, which consists, essentially, of concave and convex rolls, between which the flat blank is passed to produce what is known as a clamshell. By the use ofmy attachment the work of the operator is rendered easier and safer and the production of the machineincreased.

In the drawinga'Figure 1 is a front view of the rolls of the Moflitt machine with my inr provement attached. Fig. 2 is a section on line at 00,. Fig. l.

A is the convex former, and B the correspondinglyconeaved upper roll. The counter-blank is fed in between these rolls, and bentinto a circular shape around the former A. As theoperator feeds a blank in, it has been hitherto necessary for him to place his hand under the former A, seize the circularshaped counter or blank while aportion of it was still in the nip of the rolls, hold it off the former, and, when it was free from the rolls, drop it into a basket below the machine. Unless the operator did this, the counter or blank would hug the former A and pass a second time between it and the upper roll, B. To prevent this and free the operator from any care for the blank other than feeding it properly to the rolls, 1 have devised the simple contrivance shown in'the drawings, and which will now describe. v I A metallic strip, 0, bent in the form shown,

As the blank passes around the former from the nip of the upper roll, it comes in contact with the plate F, and is freed from the former and drops into the inclined spout H,whence it is conveyed to the basket or other receptacle placed to receive it.
