ALLIE R. WELCH,'DECEASED, LATE OF PONTIAC, MICHIGAN, BY MARY E. WELCH, SPECIAL ADMINISTRATRIX, OF PONTIAC, MICHIGAN.
Application filed December 18, 1913.
'1' '0 all 'urhom it may concern:
Be it known that l, l\'T.-\RY E. \VELGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pontiac, county of. Oakland, State of Michigan. am administratrix of the estate of Annie R. \VELCH, deceased, late of Pontiac, Michigan, who has invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Signals for Automobiles, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to signals, and the special object of the improvements is to provide an improved signal which may operate in conjunction with the cooling fan, and one in which the signal is one quality of sound which is produced immediately when the device is actuated for that purpose.
In the accompanying drawings there is illustrated a signal in which the sound is produced by vibration of the air.
Figure 1 shows a section of the apparatus embodying the invention, aportion of the cooling fan and adjacent parts, the section being taken in the planes indicated by the lines A-A Fig. 2. Fig. 2,'is a detailedelevation of the same. looking from the right of Fig. l, and partly broken away. Fig. 3, is a section on the line CC of Figs. 1 and 2. Figs. -'l, 5 and (3 are entirely similar,,respectively, to Figs. 1, 2. and 3 but illustrate a slightly modified construction.
a is a standard for supporting the cooling fan for an automobile.
6 is a stationary arbor secured in the upper end of the standard a and extending horizontally therefromc is a pulley sleeved upon the arbor -I), and (Z is the hollow hub of the fan secured rigidly to the pulley 0.
e c are the radially extending fan blades. These blades are hollow and open to the outer air at their outer ends and to the hollow of the hub (l at their inner ends. Intlie example shown in Figs. 1', 2. and 3 there-=15 illustrated a metalfan, constructed as shown in cross section in Fig. 3, that is to say, having the dished back 9 and the fiat face 7), the space between these forming the hollow Specification of Letters Patent. in the fan blade. There is a drum having a cylindrical part 72., and the web 1" closing theinner end of this cylindrical part. The drum it fits and is secured within the hub d so that its cylindrical portion .is interposed between the inner portion of said hub and the openings to the fan blades 6. There are a series of rectangular slots j, extending through the cylindrical wall of the drum in 1', parallel to the axis thereof. There is.
a second drum 9 fitting within the drum l1. 1-, with its cylindrical wall against the interior surface of the cylindrical wall of the drum h 1. There are slots i cutting through the cylindrical portion ofthe drum 9 parallel to the slots j and so located that they shall register with said slots at certain angular positions and be closed at other angular positions. The drum 9 has a web 8 closing its inner end, its outer end being open to the atmosphere.
m is a rod passing through an axial aperture through the arbor b. The rod m may turn and slide longitudinally in said arbor,"
web 8 and the flange n on the arbor b. O'f
course the periphery of the drum may be conical as shown in the modification illustrated in Figs. l, 5 and '6, or other equivalent surface of revolution. I
The operation ofthe above descgibed de vice is as follows: The fan isi'otated through the pulley c in the usual way. The rotation of the fan blades causing a draft outward therethrough. In the ordinary working of the fan the drum 9 is carried therewith because of the friction of its wall against the cylindrical wall h secured in the hub of the fan. When it is desired to sound the signal the rod m is drawn in forcing IOU named part, the signal is sounded immediately at a pitch corresponding to the amount of braking force applied thus imparting a human element to the tone allowing the expression of. feelings to be interpreted. The sound can be varied by fully or partially braking or stopping therdrum.
Whi .the above construction is shown as illustrating the invention, it is not intended to confine the scope of the invention to tile details shown, as the invention may be e61- bodied in various equivalent mechanism.
What is claimed is: I 1. In an apparatus of the kind described, a rotating part, a second part yieldingly Gonnected with the first part so as to rotate therewith, means for retarding the motion of the second part t0"the extent required, and means whereby the relative motion of said parts shall produce an audible signal,
the pitch of the sound of which varies with the rate of relative motion of said parts.
2. The combination of a fan provided with blades with radial passages therethrough, a siren normally rotating with said fan and adapted to be operated by a draft of air through said passages.
3. The combination of a fan having blades withradial passages therethrough, said blades being/ formed at a part of their outer surface to actuate a current of air, means for rotating said fan, and a signal adapted to be sounded by the draft of air through said passages caused by the rotation of said fan.
4. The combination of a fan having blades, radial passages through said blades, meansfor rotating said fan and a signal located upon said fan adapted to be sounded by the draft of air through said-passages caused by the rotation of said fan.
5.,The combination of a fan having blades with radial passages therethrough,
means for rotating said fan and a signal of which a part of said fan forms a constituent part adapted to be sounded by the draft of air through said passages'caused by the rotation of said fan.
6. The combination of a fan provided with blades having radial passages therethrough, a siren normally rotating with said fan and adapted to be operated by a draft "of air through said passages, said'siren consisting of two parts and means for checking or holding the motion of one of said parts to operate the siren.
7 The combination of a fan provided with blades having radial passages therethrough, a siren normally rotating with said fan and adapted to be operated by av draft of air through said passages, said siren consisting of two parts and means for retarding one of said parts to produce a signal at will or vary the tone.
8. The combination of a fan provided with blades having radial passages, a siren normally rotating with said fan and adapt-.
ed to be operated by a draft of air'throug'h said passages, and means for varying the draft of air through said fan so constructed that it may be manipulated when the fan is in motion.
9. The combination of a fan having radially extending blades provided with passagestherethrough, means for rotating said fan, a hollow hub for said fan, a wall interposed between the inner openings to said passages and the interior of said hub, a cylinder, said cylinder being provided with slots, a second cylinder provided with slots fitting within the first named cylinder, said slots being adapted to register with the slots in the first named cylinder and a brake for checking the rotation of the second cylinder.
In testimony whereof, I sign thisspe'cification in the presence of two witnesses.
MARY WELCH,
Administratriw of the estate of Allie R.
' Welck, deceased.
