Abstract
18,321. P r o b s t - S c h i l l i n g , G., and Stickelberger, H. Aug. 26. Signals or alarms for warning foot-passengers or vehicles.- Relates to alarm signalling- apparatus applicable also as a speed indicator for velocipedes, motor cars, and other vehicles. Figs. 1 and 2 show one form of the apparatus, as employed on a bicycle, the alarm mechanism consisting of a siren S and a fan V both driven by belt from the front wheel spindle. The delivery pipe o of the fan opens within the casing m, one or both of the sides of this casing being formed with concentric series of perforations, which act in conjunction with similar series of perforations in one or both of the discs n', n<2> fixed on the revolving spindle i. The number of perforations in each of the series is such that each series produces a different note, and the different notes produce a harmonious chord &c. By arranging the perforations in the discs and the sides of the casing at a suitable inclination to each other, the driving-gear of the siren may be dispensed with. The end of the pipe o may be provided with a feed-pipe or whistle tuned to a definite note. A comparison of this note with the variable notes produced by the siren serves to give an indication of the speed. In the form shown in Fig. 8, the fan is dispensed with, the siren consisting of a revoluble casing p<1>, p<3> having a perforated diaphragm q<1> which acts in conjunction with the perforated fixed disc q<2>, The air enters through the apertures r<1> in the casing, and, after passing through the discs q<1>, q', escapes through the aperture r<2>. The siren may be driven by belt, or by frictional contact with the front wheel, lowering and raising mechanism being provided for putting it in and out of action. The diaphragm q<1> may be provided with a number of reeds, and the disc q<2> with corresponding apertures, to produce a definite note for speed indication. A duplex form of this construction is also described. In the form shown in Fig. 11, the siren t, u is driven by the fan w, which is actuated by the air current produced by the motion of the vehicle.
