Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSHUA STEVENS, OF CHICOPEE FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS.
CHAIR FOR EXERCISIN Gr.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,622, dated August 29, 1854.
To all wh-m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSHUA STEVENS, of Chicopee Falls, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nursery or Exercising Chairs for Children; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1, is a vertical longitudinal section of one of my improved exercising chairs. Fig. 2, is a vert-ical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3, is a horizontal section of the chair through the line, w, in Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference in each of the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates, lst to a nursery or exercising chair for very young childrensaid chair being so constructed that a child 7 or 8 months old can, with ease, lexercise himself to his own pleasure and great amusement.
It relates, 2d to a simple manner of making the chair capable of weighing the child, when desirable.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it more minutely.
A, represents a stationary frame, composed of four square uprights, and cross ties, as shown in the drawing. Inside of this frame, the chair or seat, B, for the child, is arranged, and sustained by spiral springs, C, C. The seat, B, is also composed of four uprights and a series of cross-ties,
'and has a curved back, B', and a cushioned bottom, e, as represented. The outside corners of the posts of the chair are squared ofl", so as to allow of the mortises for the friction rollers, b, being cut more conveniently. The friction rollers, fit in the said grooves, and have a groove in each of their peripheries, which receives the inner corner of each of the posts of the outer frame. These rollers keep the chair in its place, and, at the same time, allow and enable it to play up and down freely.
The spiral springs, C, C, which sustain the chair, are attached to the top cross ties of the outer frame, which are sufficiently projected to allow the springs to pass down the outside of the chair and take hold on arms, or the ends of a cross strip, D, se-
vmotion is communicated to the seat, and the child is exercised in a very gentle manner as well as greatly amused.
E, is a foot board placed in front of the outer frame, just high enough to permit the child to place his foot properly upon it, while sitting on the chairit is by pressing his foot on this board that the springs are brought into play.
F, is a scale or index, marked on one of the posts of the outer frame. By this scale, the weight of the child can always be ascertained. The top of one of the posts of the chair serves as the pointer, and designates how' far the chair is caused to descend, by reason of the weight of the child, and the number designated will tell the weight of the child.
Ascertaining the weight of the child is a matter of some importance with mothers. And this'simple and convenient way of ascertaining the same, is certainly far preferable to the ordinary way.
A spring may be placed under the seat of the chair if desirable, and the side springs dispensed with. This spring may rest on a horizontal platform or partition of the outer frame, and may be made conical or straight, as deemed best.
This exercising chair is very simple, cheap, and durable, and is well suited for exercising and amusing young children, and also weighing them when desirable.
I do notclaim arranging the seats of exercising chairs for young children upon springsas they have been thus arranged heretofore--butv What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A nursery chair, ,for exercising, alnusing, and weighing young children, having its parts arranged and operating substantially as herein described.
JOSHUA STEVENS.
