Specification of Letters Patent.
Fatented Nov. 39, 1915.
Application filed August 1'4, 191 i. Serial No. 857,274.
To all whom it may conomm:
Be it known that l, YVILLIAM B. Hasnixs. a citizen of the United t t-ates, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Ros Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Low-Vater Safety Apparatus for Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification; My invention relates to improvements in low water safety apparatus for steam boilers, having corrugated hollow disks apt to expand in proportion to the temperature rise due to an inc ease in the heat; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide outlet openings for alarm and for the connection of fuel feeding shut off valves;
and, second, to provide a fuel feeding shutoff valve having hollow dlsks apt'to shut off the fuel after the alarm hasbeen blowing; the invention consisting in the combination, construction, and. arrangement of devices hereafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my low-water safety apparatus and of my fuel-feeding sliut-o'li-valve, connected by a pipe. Fig. 2 is one element of the hollow disks in vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is one element in top view. Fig. at is one element in expanded position. Fig. 5 is my device attached to a boiler.
In accordance with my invention, the safety apparatus is shown on the drawing in Fig. 1 as being mounted in a i'nain-casirtg 1, into which on the upper end is screwed a. valve-casing 2, especially constructed for this combination, being closed by a cap 3 on the top end and having outlet openings to the sides as indicated by l. The valve-casing 2 bcii'ig 1n comn'iunicatlon with the maincasing 1 by an overflow 5. The. bottom end (l of the mi-ii'n-casing communicating with the steam boiler at the low water level as indicated by 7. A cylinder 8 extending down- 12. The valve is to engage with the valve seat 13. Fig. 2 at 14 shows corrugations. which allow the disks to expand to a great height and also it willsln'nv that those disks can be made in a great variation a'slong as there is room enough inside to give good reheating and expanding parts will be the' same as explained on Fig. 1, only an eXtr. outlet opening 18 is provided for the waste steam. This apparatus may be attached at a suitable place near the burner at the end 19. incomingfuel from 20 passing the valve 21,
which is open, unless steam from the low water safety apparatus closes it, will pass the end 19 to the burner. I
In case that the water in the boiler is coming below-the lowwater level, as indicated at '7. steam is going into the opening 6 and further into the surrounding passage 9, heating the cylinder 8 and at the same time the hollow disks 10. which. as being closed, will expand by the inclosed air, pushing up the valve 11 by stem 12, thus giving free passage for the steam through outlet openings l. Openings of this kind may be had and put in as many as available; for alarm-valve, whistle, fuel feeding shutoff-valves, etc. To one of these outlet openings 4 is a tube 22 connected, bringing fsteam from the low water safety apparatus. to the inlet 17 of the fuel feeding shut off valve, after the disks in the low water safety apparatus have been expanded and the valve lifted. iving free passage to the steam to escape through the outlet openings 4, blowing out of one of these outlet openings for alarm and at the same time giving steam to the fuel feeding shut oti' valve, as described above. Using it for my fuel feeding shutoff-valve. it has the advantage, that after the alarm alve has been blowing it gives time enough to fill up the boiler with water before the shut-oli-valve is warm enough to turn off the fuel.
The disks are shown as being hollow and closed for the reason that air. water, or any kind oi liquid, being inclosed. will expand very much by the increasing heat and push.
out the flat side walls of the disks. To give m refinlis, with name expansive metal ugated disks are provided more c0mp11,te"impmvement.
Having thus described my invention, '01?! in k I 11 a low Water safety apparatus for sieam boilers the combimtien with ainel caniroh ling device having a, valve herein and. sensitive expansion disks for epemting saicl valve to contrbl the supply of fuel of a, Water level act/natal dtIVlCQ, having a connection adapted. its communicate with a. steam mailer at the low Water level valve therein ed to permit the egress of steam partly blowing out into me open fill foraalarm and e14- pansion disks for worming said last namecl valve, and 0 5 a. giipe connection leading from the steam egress Cif the Water level. actuated device 10 the fuel com: oiling device and Mia; wL'l tn pass steam, simultaneously with the amrn1-i luwing, adjacent to the first meniionecl expansion disks, whereby fuel supply is (:(riliLl'OllHl, lif the fluctuatiox s of ti; water level, all suhstanl'ially as descnhed. testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature in the presence of live Witnesses.
