Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
EMOGENE L. PARSONS,OF GRAND LEDGE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMPOUNDS FOR CURLING HAIR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,215, dated June 20, 1871; antedated June 10, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mrs. EMOGEN'E L. PAR- soNs, of Grand Ledge, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Compound and Method of Curling, permanently, False Hair; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof.
The nature of this invention relates to a 7 compound for permanently curling hair and the method of using the same. The invention consists in a harmless compound for the purpose, and in the method of using the same, as more fully hereinafter described.
My compound is made by steeping an ounce of Japan tea, and adding the product to four quarts ofclear water, to which is also added any suitable perfume in any desired quantity.
My process of curling hair and using the before-mentioned compoundis as follows: Cleanse the hair to be operated upon thoroughly with softwater and soap, using a little sal soda if deemed preferable; then rinse until the water will run 01f clear. Pin or otherwise secure the hair to anything suitable, so that it can be divided off; then comb out and roll on woolen cloth, and fasten the ends to prevent the hair from unrolling; then place the roll in an iron, tin, porcelain, or other suitable kettle, with four quarts of soft water, andboil it slowly for about eight hours; then squeeze all the water out of it, having removed it from the kettle, and place it in a warm place until thoroughly dry. When the hair is thoroughly dry, boil it slowly for about eighthours in the compound hereinbefore described; then remove it from the compound, squeeze out, and thoroughly dry; then unroll the hair, wash it carefully and thoroughly, and rinse off, comb out, and roll over the finger, when it will be permanently curled.
If properly done the above process need not be gone through with but once. Should the hair become soiled, all that is required is to dip it in rain or soft Water and roll it over the finger.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The compound, when made and employed as and for the purposes herein set forth.
MES. EMOGENE L. PARSONS.
