To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN MAoI-IEK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of l/Vaukegan, county of Lake, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clutches, of which the following is a specification.v
My invention relates to improvements in friction clutches and has for its object the production of a clutch of this character especially designed for use in connection with phonographs, which will be of durable and economical construction and eiiici'ent in operation.
Other objects will appear` hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements ofv parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a shaft 1 upon which is arranged adisk 2 fixed to said shaft by means of a key Arranged at opposite sides of the disk 2 are rocker arms 4 the inner ends of which pivotally embrace the shaft l. Cooperating' with the outer ends of rocker arms 4: is a lever 5 pivotally connected at its inner end with the outer ends of said rocker arms by means of a pin 6. The lever 5 is so arranged that the inner end 7 thereof is positioned ink close proximity with the periphery'of diskQ, said end however being out of engagement with said disk periphery when lever 5 is in radially extending position. Said end 7 is eccentrically disposed relative to the pivot or center of oscillation of said lever so that when said lever is' tilted in either direction from its radial or neutral position, the former will engage with the periphery of disk 2 so 'as to effect operative 'connection between said disk and lever through frictional engagement.
rlhe lever 5 is releasably held in either of its three positions, namely neutral position or in tilted position to the right orleft of neutral position, by means of a 'leaf spring 8 which-is secured atome end to" the lever 5 by means of ascrew 9. "Said'lear springt? is held in central position relative to lever 5 by means of stop fingers 10 formed at'the outer end of the corresponding rocker arm 4:, said stop fingers engaging against the opposite longitudinal edges of said spring intermediate the ends thereof. The free end of spring Speis provided with an inwardly extending lug '1l adapted, when in central position, to engagea recess 12 provided in the corresponding side o-f-lever 5 and thus serve to hold the latter in its neutral position. When it is desired to tilt the lever 5 in either direction it is only necessary to flex the free end of spring 8 in either direction, the resiliency or tension of the spring s erving to tilt the leverV as desired. Said spring is releasably locked in either of its flexed positions by engagement of the lug 11 against eitherof the longitudinal edges of the lever 5, said lug being automatically engaged with said edges' of said lever l through the resiliency of the spring when said lug is moved fromv engagement with the adjacent surface of the lever. Then 'the lever 5 is in either one lof 'its tilted positions it will beseen that an operative connection willbe established between the disk 2 and said lever during rotation of said disk in one direction, the connection between said disk and lever being broken upon reverse rotation of said disk. 'Through the arrangement whereby the lever 5 vmay be adjusted to tilt in either direction from its neutral position it is apparent that an arrangement is produced whereby operative connection between the disk 2 or the driving element and the lever or the driven element may be established with Said driving element rotating in either direction.
The clutch is of simple and economical construction. the same may be readily assembled and Yhence will be found of low cost to manufacture. l
Vith the construction s et forth it will be i seen that in the operation of the clutch, with the shaft l rotating in either direction; the lever 5 may be operatively connectedthere with by simply iexing the spring 8Y in one directionvor the other to Lengage the inwardly turned lugy 1l thereof with one or the other of theflate'ral edges of said lever. If it is desired to disconnect said lever from the-member 2 vr'it is only neeessaryt disenl gage they lug 11 from the lateral edge of said lever engaged by said lug and to engage the outer end of said lug with the recess 12 in said lever, Whereupon the latter will be held in neutral position, that is With. the inner end thereof out of engagement with the periphery of member 2.
The clutch mechanism disclosed is adapted for use in a large number of places, as for instancein connection with the Winding shaft. of a phonograph. In this use the lever 5 of the device Will serve as the Winding crank ofthe phonograph in connection with which the same is employed, the outer end of said'lever being, in this case, provided Witha Asuitable handle. Also the device is espcciallv applicable to a self-player piano in connection ywith the brake or stop shaft which coperate With the Windingr or rewinding shait of the music Web. 1t is especiali)T adapted for use in the latter connection because the same is noiseless in its operation and operates in a limited space. Also, the deviceis especially adapted for use'in connection with a carpenters or machinists drill. being adapted for adiustinent to effect positive Vrotation of the bit or drill in the drilling operation and for adiustment to eiiect retrograde rotation of the bit or drill in the removal of the bit or drill from the opening formed in the Work operated upon. y
lVhile 1 have illustrated and described the Dreferred form of construction for carrying mv invention into-eii'ech'this is capable of variation and modification Without de` parting from the spirit of the invention; I, therefore, do not wish' to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail mvself of such variations and modifications asv come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device ofthe class described comprising a rotatably' mounted circular element; a member pivotally connected rvvith said circular element concentrically thereof; a lever having one end pivotally connected with said member and arranged for'engagement against the periphery of said circular element,v said end of said lever, when in one position relative to said element, beingv in neutral or disengaging position, tilting. of said lever in either direction from'said neutral position,causing said end thereof'to engagek said periphery of said circular element; and means for yieldingly holding said lever in either of its tilted positions, substantially as described.

A. device ofthe class described comprisingV ar rotatably mounted circular element; a member pivotally connected With said circular element concentrically thereof; a lever having one end pivotally connected ivithfsaid member and arranged'for engagement against the. periphery of said circular element, said end of said lever\vhen in one position relative to said element, being in neutral or disengaging position, tilting of said lever in either direction from said neutral position, causing said end thereof to engagesaid periphery of said circular element; and a leaf spring for yieldingly holding said lever in either of its tilted positions, substantially as described.

A device of the character described comprising a rotatably ,mountedy circular element; a rocker arm having one end pivotally-connected With said circular element concentrically thereof; a leverhaving one end pivotally connected. With the outer end of said rocker arm for engagement' against the periphery of said circular element, said end of said lever, when in one position rela-4 tiveto said element, being in neutral or disengaging position, tilting of said lever in either direction from said neutral position, causing said end thereof to engage said periphery of said circular element; and means for yieldingly holding said lever in either of its-tilted positions, substantially as described.

A device of the character described comprising a rotatably mounted circularelcment; a rocker arm having one end pivotally connected with said circular element concentrically thereof; a lever having one end pivotally connected With the outer end of said rocker arm for engagementagainst the periphery of said circular element, said end of saidy lever, When in one position relative to saidelement, being in neutral or disengaging position, tilting of said lever in either direction from said neutral position, causing said end thereof to engage said periphery of said circular element; and means coperating With said rocker arm for yieldingly holdingl said lever in either of its tilted positions. substantially as described.

A device of the character described comprising a rotatably mounted circular element a .rocker arm having, one end pivotally connected With said circular element concentrically thereof; a lever having one end pivotally connected With the outer end of said rocker arm for engagement against the periphery of said circular element, said end of said lever, when in one position relative to said element, being in neutral or disengaging position, tilting of said lever in either direction from said neutral position, causing said end thereof to engage said periphery of said circular element; means for yieldingly holding said lever in either of its tilted positions, said means comprising a leaf spring secured at one end to said lever; means at the outer end of said rocker arm engaging with said spring intermediate its ends to hold said spring in a fixed position, the free end of said spring being adapted for lateral flexing in either direction; and means for holding said free end of said spring in either of its flexed positions, sub stantially as described.

A device of the character described comprising a rotatably mounted circular element; a rocker arm having one end pivotally connected with said circular element concentrically thereof; a lever having one end pivotally connected with the outer end of said rocker arm for engagement against the periphery of said circular element, said end of said lever, when in one position relative to said element, being in nuetral or disengaging position, tilting of said lever in either direction from said neutral position, causing said end thereof to engage said periphery of said circular element; means for yieldingly holding said lever in either of its tilted positions, said means comprising a leaf spring secured at one end to said lever; stop fingers at the outer end of said rocker arm engaging with said spring intermediate its ends to hold said spring in fixed position, the free end of said spring being. adapted for lateral flexing in either direction; and means for holding said free end of said spring in either of its flexed positions, substantially as described.

A device of the character described comprising a rotatably mounted circular eleriphery of said circular element; means for yieldingly holding said lever in either of its tilted positions, said means comprising a lateral flexible leaf spring, said spring being adapted When flexed in one direction to tilt said lever in one direction and, when flexed in the other direction, to tilt said lever in the other direction; and means for releasably holding said spring in either of its iiexed positions, substantially as described.

A device of the character described Y riphery of said circular element; means forV yieldingly holding said lever in either of its tilted positions, said means comprising a lateral fiexible leaf spring, said spring being adapted when flexed in one direction to tilt said lever in one direction and, when flexed in the other direction, to tilt said lever in the other direction; and a lug at the free end of said spring adapted to engage against either of the longitudinal edges of said lever to-:releasably lock said spring in either of its flexed positions, substantially as described.
10. A device of the character described comprising a rotatably mounted circular ele-` ment; a rocker arm having one end pivotally connected With said circular element co-ncentrically thereof; a lever having one end pivotally connected with the outer end of said rocker arm for engagement against the periphery of said circular element, said end of said lever, when in one position rela-- tive to said element, being in neutral or disengaging position, tilting of said lever in one direction from said neutral position causing said end thereof to engage said pe riphery of said circular element; and resili ent means for yieldingly holdingY said lever normally in said tilted position, substantially as described.
