To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it-known that I, VERNON GARNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementssheets vertically piled on a horizontal movable board may be separated, one from another, and delivered to the withdrawing rolls which carry the sheets forward to a printing press, or other machine designed to operate on such sheets.
One of the advantages of my mechanism is an increased speed and eiiiciency in separating the sheets. and presenting them to the withdrawingr rolls to be carried forward from my device. Therefore. according to my present invention, 'the sheets are first combed a short distance in one direction to separate them from the vertical pile, after which they are moved in an opposite direction, and are caught between the withdrawing rolls and so carried from the pile.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the essential features of my device; and Fig. 2 is a plan view.

Referring to the figures, 1 is the main frame of a feeding machine which carries a vertically movableboard 2 upon which the bank or pile of paper P rests to be fed to my feeder to be separated and carried forward to the press or other machine. The board 2 is raised automatically by means of the vertical screw 3 through mechanism it is not necessary to describe.
4 is a combing roll journaled at 5 at the end of the arm G secured to the rock shaft 7 which also carries an upwardly extending arm 8.

9 represents'a series ofl pinions pivotally mounted on the shaft 7 and arm 6, whereby the combing roll 4 is properly rotated as hereinafter described.
The upper end of the arm 8 through its cam roller engages a fan-shaped cam 10 secured to the actuating cam shaft 11 as shown in Fig. 2. To the rock shaft 12 is secured a segmented arm 13 having gear teeth in the ends' thereof meshing with the pinion 9 afiixed to the shaft 7. The swinging movement of the arm 13 will therefore cause a rotation of the combing roll l so as to carry the top sheet to the left looking at Fig. 1. 11 is another segmented arm affixed to the shaft 12, shorter than the arm 13, and having ratchet teeth in its segmentedportion.
15 is a heart-shaped cam secured to the cam shaft 11 and operates through the cam roller 16 mounted on the rock lever 1T, the rock shaft l2 to give the requisite swinging movement to the segmented arms 13 and 11. The outer end 18 of the rock-lever 17 has pivctally secured thereto the slide rod 19 secured by appropriate brackets in the frame and actuated in an upward direction by the coil spring 20. thereby pressing the opposite end of the rock lever 1.7 with its camroller 1G continuously against the cam 15.
:21 is the power shaft. rotated in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1 by any suitable source of power. and operates through miter gears the cam actuating shaft 11 as shown in the figures. l
22 is a trip linger mounted on the rock shaft 23 and has atlixed thereto the latch '21 which extends upwardly as shown in Fig. 1.
25 is a pawl pivotally secured to the farine at 26 and adapted to engage with the ratchet teeth in the arm 11; on the inner end of the pawl 25 is the latch block 2T adapted to engage with the latch 24 to hold the pawl 25 out of engagement with the ratchet teeth of the arm l-l. The ,spring 28 atlixed to the frame and to the outer end of the pawl 25 presses this pawl into engagement with the ratchet teeth of the arm 1l. when the trip nger 22 is moved backward by the combed sheet so as to dislodge the latch Q-L from the latch block 2T. This action stops the rota tion of the combing roll l by causing the arm 13 to cease swinging outwardly simul taneously with the stoppage of the arm 14 by having the pawl engage with the ratchet teeth in this arm 1l. Secured to the shaft 29 is the hand operated pinion 30 having its teeth meshing with teeth in the shaft 31 to advance or withdraw the combing roll and tlip finger mechanisln on the frame 1 'according to the size of the sheets which are being separated.

In operation the cams 10 and 15 are so timedand secured to the shaft 11 as to cause the rotation of the combing roll 4 to separate and carry to the left the top sheet against the trip finger 22 which through the dislodgment of the latch and latch block causes the pawl 25 to engage the ratchet teeth in the arm 14 thereby stopping the rotation of the combing roll 4. after which the cam 1() engages the arm 8 to lift the combing roll 4 from the bank 'of sheets. Thereafter the trip finger is reset through the pawl 25 being forced downwardly bythe outward swing of the arm 14 so. as to cause the engagement of the latch 24 with the latch block 2T. This movement causes the top sheet to he moved to the left the distance from the edge of the bank to the trip finger 22.
Referring to the mechanism to the right of my device looking at Fig. 1. 33 is a roller pi votally mounted on the rock lever 34 journaled on the rock shaft 34 which is supported by the rock arln mounted on the rock shaft 3G. 3T is a roller mounted on the inner end of the rock-lever and is adapted to press against the under surface of the parallel bar 3H Ithe inner end of which is pivotally secured to the rock arm 39 journaled on the frame 1. as shown in the fig-v ures. 40 is a spring connecting the inner end of the rock lever 34 to the rock arm 35, and tends to hold the roller 3T in close contact with the under surface of the bar 33. Mounted on the rock shaft 3G is the rock lever 41. the upper end of which is pivotally secured to the slide rod 42 secured to-the frame l and actuated by the coil spring 42. To the lower end of the rock lever 41 is secured the ratchet bar 43 having the cam roller 4311 adapted to engage the heartshaped cam 44 secured to the cam actuating shaft 45 which is rotated through miter gears b v the power shaft 21. The spring pressed slide rod 42 causes the roller 43n to follow the heart-shaped cam 44. which so operates the ratchet bar 43 as to cause the roller 33 to catch and push to the right the top sheet which has been separated b v the combing roll'4. 4G are a series of guide fingers loosely journaled on the shaft 47 the ends of which rest through gravity on the top of the bank of sheets. (36 is a rock shaft secured to the frame and has mounted thereon the 'rock arms GT and 68, the arm 67 supporting the shaft .30. and the arm (i8 supporting the outer end of the bar 3S. 69 is a rock arm likewise secured to the rock shaft G6 and carries the cam roller T0 which engages with the fan-shaped cam 71 mounted on the cam shaft 45.` This cam 71 imparts the requisite movement to the rock arms 67 and (3S to raise and lower the upper withdrawing roll 4S and the roller 33 on the rock lever 34 through the parallel bar 38 respectively. Mounted on the rock shaft 66 is the rock arm 72 which carries the slotted link T3 which is pivotall)7 secured to the arm T4 mounted on the rock shaft 61. It is apparent, therefore, that increased speed and efficiency in separating and for- Warding the individual sheets are attained through my improved feeder for in operation the respective devices are so timed that the combing roll mechanism will be feeding backwardly the second sheet from the bank, as soon as the sheet roller mechanism on the right. of Fig. l has carried the first sheet sufficiently forward to be caught by the withdrawing rolls and forwarding belts and its back edge is beyond the line of action of the combing roll. By this method of separating and feeding sheets of paper, I am enabled to increase very materially the effectiveness and rapidity in handlingbauks of paper to be delivered to printing and other like machines` I claim as my invention 1. In` a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with means for operating a combing roll to feed the top sheet in one direction, of means for controlling thei combing roll by the sheet, a laterally moving sheet roller mechanism for conveying the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll, and means for controlling the sheet roller by the sheet.
2. In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with an intermittently acting combing roll to feed the top sheet in one direction, of means for controlling the action of the combing roll by the sheet, a laterally moving sheet roller mechanism for conveying the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll, and means for controlling the sheet roller by the sheet.

In a machine for Y feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with an intermittently rotating combing roll to feed the top sheet in one direction, of means for controlling by the sheet the rotation of the combing roll between successive operations, and a sheet roller mechanism for conveying at regular intervals the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll, controlled by the sheet.

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with an intermittently rotating combingroll to feed the top sheet in one direction, of means for controlling the rotation of the combing roll by the sheet, and a sheet roller mechanism for conveying the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll at regular intervals, controlled by the sheet.

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with an intermittently rotating combing roll to feed the top sheet in one direction, of means for controlling the rotation of the combing roll between successive-operations controlled bythe sheet, a sheet roller mechanism for conveying 'the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll, and nlileans for controlling the sheet roller by the s eet.

In a machine for feeding sheets Yof paper from a pile, the combination with an intermittently acting combing roll, of means for raising and lowering the combing roll from the pile, sheet controlled means comprising a ratchet and pawl for throwing the combing roll out of operation, a sheet roller mechanism for conveying the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll, and means for controlling the sheet roller by the sheet.
7. .In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with means for operating a combing roll to feed the top sheet in one direction, of means for controlling the combing roll by the sheet, a sheet roller mechanism for conveying the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll while the latter acts on the next sheet in the pile. and means for controlling the sheet roller by the sheet.

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper` from a pile, the combination with means for operating a combing roll to feed the top sheet in one direction, of means for controlling the combing roll by the sheet, a sheet roller mechanism for conveying the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll while the latter acts on the .next sheet in the pile, and a sheet operated trip for controlling the sheet roller.
9. In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with means for operating a combing roll to feed the top sheet in one direction, of means for controlling the combing roll by the sheet,
a laterally moving sheet roller'mechanism for conveying the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll between successive operations of the combing roll upon the pile, and means for controlling the sheet roller by the sheet.

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with means for operating a combing roll to feed the top sheet in one direction, of means for controlling the combing roll by the sheet, a laterally moving sheet roller mechanism for conveying the top sheet in a di` rection opposite to the action of the combing roll between successive operations of the combing roll upon the pile, and a sheet operated trip for controlling the sheet roller.

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with an intermittently acting combing roll, of a sheet roller mechanism for conveying the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll between.. successive operations of the latter on the pile, mean's for advancing and withdrawing the sheet roller mechanism along the pile controlled by the sheet, and means for raising and lowering the same from the pile.

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with an intermittently acting combing roll, of .a sheet roller mechanism for conveying the sheet in a'direction opposite to the action of the combing roll between successive operations of the latter on the pile, means for advancing and withdrawing the sheet roller mechanism along the pile, means for raising and lowering the same from the pile, and a sheet operated trip for controlling the first of said last-mentioned means.

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with` an intermittently acting combing roll, vof a sheet roller' mechanism for conveying the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll between successive operations of the latter on the pile, means for raising and lowering the sheet roller from the pile at regular intervals, and sheet controlled means comprising a ratchet and pawl for regulating the action of the sheet rollen 14. In a machine for' feedingy sheets of paper from al pile, the combination with an intermittentlyl acting combing roll, of means for controlling the combing roll by the sheet, means for -raising'and lowering the combing roll between successive operations, a sheet roller mechanism for conveying thesheet l in'a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll, and means for advancing and withdrawing the sheet roller along the surface of the pile controlled by the sheet.

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile,'the combination with an .intermittently acting combing roll, of means for controlling the combing roll by the sheet, a sheet roller mechanism for conveying the sheet in a direction opposite to theaction of the combing roll between successive operations of the latter on the pile, and means for advancing and withdrawing the sheet roller along, and for raising 'and lowering the same from, the pile, the former means being controlled by the sheet.
17. In a machine for feeding sheets of paper vfrom a pile, the combination with an intertions of the latter on the pile, means foradvancing and withdrawing the sheet roller along the pile, and a sheet-operated trip for controlling the advancing and withdrawing means.

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with an intermittently acting combing roll, of a sheet operated controlling trip for controlling the action of the combing roll, means for raising and lowering the combing roll from the pile, a sheet roller mechanism for conveying the sheet in a direction opposite tothe action of the combing roll before the combing roll acts on the next sheet in the pile, means for advancing and withdrawing the sheet roller along the pile, means for raising and lowering said sheet' roller from the pile, and a sheet operated trip for controlling the first of said last mentioned means.

In a machine for feeding sheets o'f paper from a pile, the combinationwith an intermittently acting combing roll, of means for raising and lowering the combing roll from the pile, sheet controlled means comprising a ratchet and pawl for controlling the action of the combing roll, a sheet roller mechanism -for conveying the sheet in a di rection opposite to the action of the combing roll before the combing roll acts on the next sheet in the pile, means for advancing and tion opposite to the action of the combing roll before the combing roll acts on the next sheet in the pile, means for advancing and withdrawing the sheet roller along the pile, means for raising and lowering said sheet roller from the pile, and a sheet operated trip for controlling the first of saidlast mentioned means. e

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with an intermittently acting combingroll, of sheet controlled means comprising a ratchet and pawl for controlling the action of the combing roll, a sheet roller mechanism for conveying the sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll before the combing roll acts on the neXt sheet in the pile, means for advancing and withdrawing the sheet roller along the pile controlled by the sheet, and means for raising and lowering said sheet roller from the pile at regular intervals.
In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with a combing roll intermittently acting upon the top sheet, of means for controlling the combing roll by the sheet, means for advancing the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll between succcessive operations of the combing roll upon the second sheet, and means for controlling said sheet advancing means by the top sheet.

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with a combing roll intermittently acting upon the top sheet, of means for controlling the combing roll by the sheet, means for advancing the top sheet in a direction opposite to the action of the combing roll between successive operations of the combing roll upon the second sheet, and a sheet operated trip for controlling by said top sheet said sheetadvancing means.

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with means for dfeeding the topmost sheet rearwardly from the pile, of tripping mechanism comprising a ratchet and pawl for controlling said feeding means by said sheet, means for advancing said topmost sheet forwardly off the pile, and tripping mechanism comprising a ratchet and-pawl for controlling said sheet-advancing means by the sheet.

In a machine for feeding sheets of paper from a pile, the combination with means for feeding the topmost sheet rearwardly from the pile, of tripping mechanism comprising a ratchet and pawl for controlling said feeding means by said Sheet, means for advancing said topmost sheet forwardly off the pile between successive operations of the rearwardly feeding means, and tripping mechanism comprising a ratchet and pawl for controlling said sheetadvancing means by the sheet.
