is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This inventionrelates to apparatus for lasting the toes of boots and shoes, the object of the invention being to provide a cheap, simple, compact and easily'operated mechanism with which the uppers may be quickly and smoothly lasted, the illustrative embodiment of the invention herein shown being adapted for light work in lasting which a large output is desirable.
The several features of the invention will be disclosed in the following description of" the illustrative apparatus, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and will be particularly pointed out in the claims. a V
Referring to the drawings :,Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved lasting apparatus showing a shoe in position to be lasted and a portion of abench in section. A pair of crossed levers resembling pincers26 is pivoted at 27 to the upper end of the vertical arm of the bell-crank lever 17 and to the lower jaw 28 of said pincers is pivoted at 31 a pair of toe wipers 29, 30, said toe wipers being shown as round rods bent intov approximately horseshoe shape and adapted to swing in a horizontal plane, or a plane substantially parallel to the sole of the shoe. The lower arms 33 and 34 of a second pair of crossed levers or pincers 32 are pivoted at 35 and 36, respectively, to the toe wipers 29 and 30, andthese arms are extended downwardly below said toe wipers and are provided with lateral projections 37 and 38, which extend, respectively, through holes 39 and 40 formed in the guide arms ll and 42, said guide arms forming, in effect, a single U-shaped piece per jaw 46 of the pincers 26, said clamp plate being preferably of U-shape. At this time the free ends of the toe wipers 29 and 30 are held apart by the action of the handles 50 and 51 of the second pair of pincers 32. The operator now folds the upper 13 of the shoe over the toe wipers 29 and 30 and the toe clamping plate 15 is brought downwardly by moving the handles of the pincers 26 together until the leatherof the upper is clamped between the under side of the toe clamp plate -15 and the upper side of the wipers 29 and 30, Fig. 9, and is pulled upwardly about the toe of the last. The operator now presses upon the treadle 21, rocking the bell-crank lever 17 upon its pivot 18 and moving the two pairs of pincers with the toe wipers and toe clamping plate forwardly or to the right (Fig. 1), said parts being carried automatically downward about thepivot 18 as they are moved forwardly. This draws the upper overthe toe of the shoe, as illustrated in Fig. 10, and while this is occurring the op-v erator moves the toe wipers towardeach other and applies downward pressure upon the end portions of the wipers by manipulating the handles of the second pair of pincers 32, swinging the free ends of the toe wipers inwardly toward each other and wiping the sides of the toe portion of the upper firmly over the inner sole of the shoe, as illustrated in Fig. 5. By pressing laterally the second pair of pincers, as distinguished frommerely closing them, the operator can close one wiper farther than the other one as may be required for the shape of the shoe. The sole may be coated with adhesive to secure the upper or the operator may now tack the toe portion of the upper to the inner sole, or fasten it thereto inany desirable manner. He then releases thetreadle 21 and opens apa'rtqthe handles of the pincers 26 and 32, the parts resuming the relative positions illustrated in Fig. 1. He next removes the shoe and the apparatus is in condition to operate upon another shoe for the purpose of drawing the toe of the upper over the last as hereinbefore described.
' It will be understood that the handles 48 and 41-9 of the pincers 26 are joined together by a pivot 53, the jaw 28 being an extension of the handle 48 and the jaw 46 being an extension of the handle 49.
Vhile I have described my invention as embodied in apparatus for lasting the toes of boots and shoes, it is evident that some features of the invention are also useful in apparatus for lasting the heel portion of the uppers of boots and shoes. Having thus explained my invention and described one embodiment thereof, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. An end lasting apparatus having, in combination, means for supporting alast in inverted position, a lever fulcrumed in front of the last so supported and carrying toe embracing jaws, and means for. actuating the aws to cause them to embrace the toe,
saidlever being arranged for manipulation to operate the toe embracing jaws to wipe the upper up the sides of the last into lasted relation to the edge of the last bottom and said aw actuating means being arranged for manual control during the upward wiping movement imparted to the jaws by the lever.
2. An end lasting apparatus having, in combination, means for supporting a last in inverted position, a lever fulcrumed in front of the last so supported, toe embracing jaws carried on the end of the lever that is adj acent to the too, a clamp cooperating with said jaws to seize the toe portion of the upper, and manually controlled means for operating the clamp to control the force with which the upper is held while the toe is being lasted.

An end lasting apparatus having, in combination, means for supporting a last in inverted position, a lever mounted in front of the last so supported and adjacent to the plane of the last bottom, toe embracing jaws mounted on the lever, and a clamp cooperating with the jaws to seize the upper about the shoe toe, and manually controlled operating means for said lever and for the toe embracing-jaws to efi'ect the lasting operation. An end lasting apparatus having, in combination, means for supporting a last in inverted position, a lever fulcrumed in front of the last so supported and adjacent thereto, toe embracing jaws mounted on the lever, means for actuating said jaws lengthwise of the shoe against'the end of the shoe, and means for actuating the jaws trans versely of the shoe to embrace the toe, said lever being adapted for actuation to cause the jaws to wipethe upper up the sides of the shoe, the jaw operating means being ar-- ranged for manual control during the movements efiected by said lever.

and means for closing the jaws, said lever being adapted for actuation manually to lift and to depress the jaws. I

An end lasting apparatus having, in combination, the crossed levers having operating handles, toe embracing jaws carried by one lever, a cooperating clamp actuated by the other lever to grip the upper when it is outspread over the jaws, and means for advancing and closing the jaws to overlay the upper upon the shoe bottom.

An end lasting apparatus having, in combination, means for supporting a last, a lever fulcrumed in front of the last and having a handle by which it can be moved up and down and also laterally, toe embracing wiper jaws carried on said lever, means to advance the jaws, and means to close the jaws, said lever mounting'permitting movement of the lever to shift the jaws together in the same direction transversely of the shoe. 13. An, end lasting apparatus having, in combination, means for supporting a last, end embracing wiper jaws, operating means actuated by a foot treadle for advancing the jaws over the shoe bottom and hand operated means for closing the jaws.

17. An end lasting apparatus having, in combination, toe embracing wiper jaws comprising round rods bent to horseshoe shape, and means for actuating the wiper jaws to rub up the sides and inwardly over the bottom of the toe.

An end lasting apparatus having, in combination, toe embracing wiper jaws, a cooperating clamp to grip the upper upon the outer end portions of the jaws along the sides of the toe at or adjacent to the tip seam location, means for rocking the jaws and clamp together about a horizontal axis extending transversely of the shoe and a substantial distance in front of the toe to pull the upper up the side faces of the toe and to a greater extent near the free ends of the wipers than at the middle of the toe, and means for operating the wiper. jaws to overlay the upper upon the shoe bottom.

An end lasting apparatus having, in combination, toe embracing wiper jaws, a cooperating clamp between which and the jaws the upper may be gripped, said clamp including means for holding the upper upon the jaws at the sides ofthe toe, and actuating means for moving said jaws and clamp to pull the upper upwardly and then to overlay it, said parts being arranged for greater pulllng movement at the said sides than at the end of the toe.
20. An end lasting apparatus having, in combination, toe embracing wiper jaws, and means for advancing the wiper jaws over the shoe bottom to overlay the upper, said means being constructed and arranged to move the jaws downward asan incident to their advance movement.
21. In an apparatus for lasting the uppers of boots and shoes, a pair of pincers, a pair of toe wipers pivoted to one jaw of said pincers, and a second pair of pincers the jaws of which are pivoted respectively to the free ends of said wipers.
22. In an apparatus for lasting the uppers of boots and shoes, a lever, a pair of pincers pivotally supported upon said lever, a pair of toe wipers pivoted to one jaw of said pincers, and a second pair of pincers, the
jaws of which are pivoted, respectively to the free ends of said wipers.
28. In an apparatus for lasting the uppers of boots and shoes, a pair of pincers, a pair of toe wipers pivoted to one jaw of said pincers, two guide arms fast to said jaw and extending forwardly therefrom outside said wipers, and a second pair of pincers, the jaws of which are pivoted respectively to the free ends of said wipers, and lateral projections upon the free ends of said last named jaws extending through holes pro vided in said guide arms.
24. In an apparatus for lasting the uppers of boots and shoes, a pair of pincers, a pair of toe wipers pivotedto one jaw of said pincers, a toe clamp plate fast to the other jaw of said pincers, and a second pair of pincers the jaws of which are pivoted respectively to the free ends of said wipers.
25. In an apparatus for lasting the uppers of boots and shoes, a lever, apair of pincers pivotally supported upon said lever, a pair of toe wipers pivoted to one jaw of said pincers, a toe clamp plate fast to the other jaw of said pincers, and a second pair of pincers the jaws of which are pivoted respectively to the free ends of said wipers.
