Description

-J. A. COVIT.
METHOD OF MAKING ELECTRIC LIGHT STREAMERS.
Patented Nov. 23, 1915. I
L161A4k. 7
Jon A. m
TOT-IN A. COVIT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
, METHOD or MAKING ELEGTRIGLIGHT STREAli/IERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. l atgnt l N 23 19111 Application filed March 12,, 1915. Serial No. 14,013.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. Covrn'a c1t1- zen of the United-States. and residlng at New York; in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Method of Making Electric-Light Streamers, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in "the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what are known as electric light streamers for use for decorative and other purposes, and the object thereof is to provide a device or devices ot this class in which the lamp sockets are hermetically sealed, and with this andother objects in view the-invention consists in the method herein described of making said streamers and in the article or device so produced.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a View showing apart of what is known as an ordinary electric light streamer and showing a number of lamp sockets connected therewith according to my invention; Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 of Fig. 3; Fig; 3 a section on the line 33 of Fig. and, Fig. 4 a section on the line L4 of Fig. 2,
In the accompanying drawing, l have shown at a a part ofa suspending wire, wire rope or cable, such as is usually employed in constructing and using what is known as electric streamers for decorative or other purposes together with the usual circuit wires orcables I) and. in Fig. l, I have shown a number of clectric.lamp sockets 0 connected with the wires or cables Z) according to my invention. The sockets c, in the form of construction shown. consist of head portions 0 and shank portions 0. and the electric light bulbs c" are screwed into the socket devices a in the usual manner.
The sockets a" are formed in the shank portions 0. in the usual manner, and areprovided with threaded metal sleeves c" and blocks 0 of porcelain or similar material through which are passed plugs or bolts and one of the circuit Wires 6 is in electrical connection with the metal sleeves c and The parts o, c. 0*, c and c constitute the electric fittings (if tilt sockets and in carrying my invent-ion into effect. said parts are assembled in the manner shown and are connected with the circuit wires 1 and are all supported in suitable molds arranged at 'intervals and the material of the socket pieces, rubber. or other suitable material in a liquid or plastic'state. poured into the mold and placed under pressure and the body of the lamp sockets shaped or formed, as shown in the accompanying drawing, is produced and ready fol-use with the circuit wires 5 passing laterally th'erethrough and the bodies of said lamp sockets are hermetically sealed, cxeept'at the bottom and no moisture of any kind or class can enter the said sockets when suspended, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive.
In the foregoing method of operation the insulationof the socket wires 72 is plated thereon in the usual manner and the lamp sockets are molded on said circuit wires and the result of this operation is shown in Fig. 4, the molding of said lamp sockets under pressure serving to compress the insulation b with the lamp sockets formed thereon may be made up of sections of any desired length,
and any number of said sections may be'conneg-ted, and in the operation of molding thev lamp sockets. .as herein described, eye-pins or bolts d are molded in the tops of the,
heads (1" and the suspending wire or cable a is connected therewith by means ot' open rings wire loops or similar devices 0, as shown in Fig. 1.
My invention is alsonot limited to the idea of suspendingthe lamp sockets from the circuit wires 77, as herein shown and (1c scribed, and my improvement may be used in connection with sign boards or sign apparatus by passing the neck or shank portions of the sockets horizontally thr u h a vertically arranged board or frame so" that thelamp bulbs will appear at the front of said board or frame only and in this use of what I claim as new and desire to secure by i my improvement the circuit wires 6 and the heads of the lamp sockets will be at the back'of the board or frame and would not appear to, or be seen by an observer of the sign, and my invention may also, as will be understood, be employed for other purposes,
and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims,
without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Although I have shown and described th use of only two circuit wires on which the lamp sockets are molded, my invention is not limited to this idea and anynumber of circuit wires may be employed according to the use for which the deviceor apparatus, or the lamp sockets, are intended, or the method of such use.
Having fully described my invention,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for fittings in molds, and molding the socket bodies onto said circuit wires and fittings with the circuit wires passing laterally through the heads of the socket bodies.
2. An electric light streamer device, comprising parallel circuit wires, electric lamp socket fittings connected with said Wires at intervals and electric lamp socket bodies molded onto said circuit wires and fittings, said wires passing transversely through the heads of said socket bodies.
3. An electric light streamer device, comprising parallel. circuit wires and electric lamp socket bodies molded on said wires at intervals, said wires passing transversely through the heads of said bodies. and being in" connection with electric lamp socket fittings within said bodies.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 11th day of March 1915.
JOHN A. COVIT.
