Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1915.
Original application filed February 7, 1912,. Serial `No. 676,100. Divided and this application led April 29,
1915. Serial No. 24,762.
T 0 ZZ lwhom t may concern.'
Be it known that VILLIAM H. WYILDER, late a citizen of the United States, residing at Gardner, Massachusetts, and now de ceased, and l, FRED E. v1-HTF., a citizen of the United States, residing at Gardner, Massachusetts, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Ovens, of which the following is a specification. j
The present invention relates to an improved fastening device intended more especially for use on the doors of ovens of the character used in connection with gas or vapor stoves. In such ovens', in order to have the door held tightly closed it is necessary to have fastening devices at the corners as such doors are usually made of light sheet metal which has'some tendency to warp under the heat. Such corner fastenings as have heretofore been employed, so far as we are aware requirethe use of both hands of the operator to manipulate' them which is exceedingly inconvenient as it is frequent-ly desired to open the oven door'with one hand while holding a dish with the other hand.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and efficient form of fastening device' which will hold the door tightly at the cornersl and which may yet be Imanipulated by one hand serving both to unfasten the holding devices and as a means for lowering and raising the door which is usually hinged at` the bottom and which when open serves as a shelf.A
The invention includes the novel features ofconstruction defined in they appended claim and hereinafter' more .particularly described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of an oven and door with the improved fastening device applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail being a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking to the right.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing, the numeral l designates the outer case or shell of the oven, which is preferably of the form disclosed in application No. 676,100 filed Feb. 7, 1912, of which the present case is a division. l
7 indicates the door of the oven which is hinged at its lower edge preferably by means of arms 8 entering slots 9 in the lower corners of the front wall of the oven '-as more clearly disclosed in .the application referred to.
The improved locking device comprises a single wire or steel rod 11 journaled in clips 12 which have their ends passed through I serve to engage and disengage the edges of i the slots but to draw the upper corners of the door and hence the entire upper edge of the door tightly against vthe front edge or face of the oven.
4vIt i's preferred to provide the front wall of the oven adjacent the slots throughwhich the arms pass with inwardly projecting portions 1c with which the hooks 11b engage with a stay or cam or friction wall thus preventing disengagement of theV parts. V
Having described the invention as more particularly adapted for an oven door. it will be understood that it is not desired to restrict it to this. use as it is applicable to any form of door which desires to be held Yat the corners and it will be capable of maadapted to draw the corners of the door tightly against the oven, the parts being adapted to be disengaged to'` open the door by the lifting of the handle, substantially as described.
Signed at Gardner, ll'lassachusetts,v this 14th day of April, 1915.
