To ZZ whom/152mg conce/11n: -f A Be it known that I, ANTON MEHLFELDER, ya citizen of the United States, residing at yN ew York city, countyand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Movements, clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates `toy a mechanical movement of the intermittent type, that is to say, a device that will transform a rotary movement into an intermittentmovement. My improved device for gaining the above result can be applied to any apparatus requiring such a movement, forinstance amotion picture apparatus in which the film is advanced step by step by a Constantly rotating driving shaft.
The device willbe fully set forth in the f following specification and claims.
In the drawings: `Figure 1 isasectional face view ofan embodiment of my invention, the section/being taken on aline l--l in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 .is a sectionalfside view, the section being taken on a line 2-4-2 in Fig. 1, looking in the direction ofthe arrow. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation. Figs. 1 and 5 are diagrammatic views illustrating the driving erating means therefor in two positions.
FiO's. 6 and 7 are diagrammaticr side viewsy showing` the "driven fdisk, and lock therefor in two positions. Fig. 8 is aperspective view, illustrating one .form of universal shavft connection which I can employ.
Iy arbitrary form, thatis to say the manner of assembling the parts.
As herein illustrated, my invention consists of a driven member 2 and a driving member 4, herein shown as gears, the primary driving or power device, being omitted as well as the element operated by the driven ear.
g The objectof the device is to operate the gear 2 step by step, or intermittently, the gear shaft 4 carrying the gear 3, beingfconstantly rotated during the operation of the machine. To intermittently operate the gear 2 and its shaft 5 I employ a disk 6 having a face cam 7 designed'to operate a vibratory frame 8 pivotally mounted at one end thereof upon the driven shaft 5, the other end being pivotally supported by a stud 9 car ried by a trunnion 10 for the frame 11.
in Intermittent Mechanical ofwhich the following is ak plan view partly inV disk and op-k invention is herein embodied in an' frame 8, a lock nut 31 speiacafioa f Lettersrani. Patemd Nov, 16,1915, Application filed April 18 1914. Serial No. 832,691. f
The frame 11 rotatably supports the cam disk 6 and is itself pivotally supported upon the trunnion 10 and bearing 12 upon the standardy 13. The frame 11 is made in halvesl and 15 and is therefore clamped to its pivotal supports 10 and 12.
As can be seen in F ig. 2, the cam disk 6 is carried by a shaft 17 pivotally mounted in thecasing or framing 11. Theshaft' 17 also carries a iiy-wheel 19 which serves the purpose of any Hy-wheel or balance. v Adjacent` the cam-disk 6 I ylocate the vibratory frame 8, the axis of which is in the axis of the casing 11., ries in this instance two arms 2O and 21. As can be seen inv Fig. 1, the1arm 2O is provided with la bracket 22, which engages the pin or stud 9, and the arm 21 with a bracket 28 engaging the shaft:
5, the bracket 23 being provided with pins or studs 24 adapted tol engage openings 25 in the driven disk 26 on the shaft 5. From an inspection of Fig. 1, it will be evident that the frame 8 will swing or oscillate to and fro upon the lstud 9 and shaft 5. The rotary path of `movement of the pins or studs 24 is' incalinement` with theopenings 25 in the driven disk 26. The function of the disk 6 is to oscillate or vibrate the frame 8 andthus rotate thedisk. 26 step by step. The step by step movement beinojaccomplished by causing the pins 24 to engage the openings 25 at intervals. of the pins y24k and openings is brought about by an eccentric 27, on the shaft 17, working in a pocket oryokeopening 28 in the `frame 8.o The function of the eccentric 27 is to reciprocate the frame 8 and thereby cause the pins 24 to engage the opening 25 in the disk 26, at intervals to be described hereiny bolted together as at 16y line with projecting horns or The engagementy ing device consisting of a reciprocating` frame 27a ing device 29 on the shaft 17. An adjusting gland or bushing 30 is used to adjust the cam 6 relative to the arms 20 and 21 of the vibratory working on guides 28a, the lockgland in an adjusted position.
As will be seen in F ig. 1, the eccentrics 27 and 29 are set oppositely in order that the locking device 27a will engage the disk 26 when the frame 8 is in its retracted position,
being used to bind the being actuated by an eccentric `will continue to move tion 33 of the cam thefcam'spot 132@Lv i frame as soon as the pins 24 enter theY openyings25. By the time thepins 24e enterfthe openings 25 the end 32 of ythe locking device will have cleared the disk 26. illustrated the device stroke and is ready to commence another. During the first half revolution of the shafts 4L and 17 the cam 27 Willforce the slideto the left, but will cause the pins 24 to enter the openings .25 before the .completion of the stroke About the time that the pins 24 Y enter the openings 25 the rise' 32.a of the ycam 7 ivill contact With the arm :20 of the frame 8. l' By the .time that the Vhalf revolution has been completed, the pins-24 Will have been. the openings 25 and,
forced completely into the krise 32a of the cam frame Sto the position will have rocked the shown in Fig. 5 imparting to the disk 26 one-sixth of a-revolu.
2. During the said its normal position as shoivn'in Figli. During a portion ofkrthe'return stroke of the frame 8,'it, the frame, Will remainv in the position to lWhichit has been-.rotated bythe cam in order that the pinsl21- can be Withdrawn from'the diskv 26 Without disturbing' said disk, the dead por- 7 being extensive enough to 'accomplish 'this result. By the timefthat the pins have been Withdrawn, the lock 32 Will have engaged the disk 26 and lockedit; and at about this time, a little later in fact, the rise 32a of the cam the position of the Copies of this patent ,may bel obtainedilifor l setto vibrate the has just completed a :pivotal mounting of thej frame That is to say,loy-thetime-the` the driving shaft 24 will be Withdrawn from theA openings 25, andthe frame 8 rocked backto 7 vv-ill ,Contact With Y the arm 21 of the frame'S and'vvill rock the said frame back to the normal position. By
"the time the saidcamfhasfcompleted theA f revolution,
it Will be obvious that'the frame 8 is normally out of engagement With the driven disk 26, it being 1n engagement therethe said diskv with only during the time that is to be advanced a step. By reason of the frame can be tilted by means ofthe handle 35, in order to rotatably advance or retard the driven disk 26. In order to permit the frame 11 to be tilted and yet not interfere f with the rotation of the shaft 17.1 provide a universal connection 36 consisting of a slot 37 in .theend of the shaft 17 and a projection 38 on the shaft. 4: adapted to enter said slot. v
I claim as myinvention:
1. A cam carried by a continuously rotatingv shaft, an oscillating member, bearing upon Vsaid cam and actuated thereby, an vin-v termittent shaft adjacent thereto, said 1ntermittenty shaft having openings to be engaged by the oscillating member for the'pur. Y pose of eifecting a desired intermittent moon *v Y 2. A device for producing an intermittent movement consisting of a pivotally mounted.
frame, a driven shaft carriedtherebyyacam carried bysaid shaft, Va pivotallymounted slidable vframe adjacent said cam and adapt! ed to be` rocked thereby, lthe pivotal points of said framebeing disposedjin a line at a right anglev to the axis of'said driving shaft,
a rotatable disk adjacentr said frame, means to slide said the periods of restthereof. l. ,Y
