LAMRlBLAGK-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1o1s.
Application filed ll 'pril 27, 191' li. Serial No. 834,878.'
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLL-m H. DAVIS, a citizen-of the United States, and a resident of Muncie, county of Delaware, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Lampblack-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to save lamp black, which has heretofore been per mitted to escape in the smoke passing upward from the devices employed for collecting lamp black.
The chief feature of the invention consists in mounting above and near the lamp which is perforated with a number of holes to permit the escape of the smoke and not destroy too much of the draft, but which will furnish an extensive surface on which lamp black willb'e deposited. The lamp black deposited onsuchplate will be of a very fine quality, as it has been so fine asnot to become deposited on the depositing devices below. Also, means is provided for collecting or scraping the lamp black from this platepr ceiling preferably so as to keep at separate from the remainder'of the lamp black because of itsb'etter quality.
Thenature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claim.
.Tn the drawings, Figure l is a vertical transverse section through lamp black apparatus; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, through axpart thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan View of a portion of a perforated ceiling ordplateQ There is shown in detail a building having walls 10 and a' roof 11, with lamp black collecting devices 12 mounted therein on members 13 and overburncrs 14. from which the smoke issues-against the underside of the devices l2,"ttiher eby said devices 12 may collect. the lamp black.
The invention is not limited to any particular lamp black collecting devices, as there is a variety of them, but it is understood by allskilled in the art that these devices 12 cdllect only a portion of the lamp black from the smoke or fumes, and chiefly,
thecoarser portion. The finer particleses- Theobject of this invention is to catch as much as possible of these lamp black particles escapingin the smoke.
7 Immediately over the lamp black collecting devices a plate 15 is mounted in the nature of a. ceiling and having through it a number of perforations 16. This plate is flat and horizontal, preferably, and it collects on its underside a considerable portion of the lamp black particles which pass upwardly of the smoke from the devices 12, and yet, said plate 15 does not entirely obstruct the escape'of the smoke, as it may pass through the perforations 16. l
The lamp black, which collects on the underside of the plate 15, may be scraped off or removed by a scraper 20 mounted in an open-top box 21 carried by sprocket chains 22 on sprocket wheels 23 and shafts- 24 driven by a belt. 25 from any suitable "a; source of power. The box 21 is elongated like a trough, and at the end of its movement it passes between the sprocket wheels 23 and. turns o"'-r, so as to dump its contents in any] suitable receptacle, not shown.
The invention is not limited to the par ticular means for scraping the plate 15 nor to the particular form of said plate, pros vided it is perforated to permit the escape of the gases and yet the major portion of .85. the plate is left to collect the lamp'black.
The. invention claimed is: The combination with a lampblack col lecting device, of a flat horizontal perforated plate mounted above the same in a position-90' to collect lamp black from the smokepasss. .i ng upward from said collecting defioefand fl a continuously moving scraper: extending transversely of said" plate and mounted; in iopen-top box foi collecting said lampblfl-Ck,
[said boxbeing carried by anendless WJELLIAM. H. Davis} Witnesses v I I J. H. WELLs, O. M. MoLAUcrram.
