To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL W. GART- wnisirr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Emery-Wheel Guards,'of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
As a safety first factor and guard for workman in the vicinity of a driven emery wheel, casings have been designed and used to prevent broken fragments or pieces of a bursted emery wheel from injuring workman or persons in proximity to the wheel, such casings also possessing certain characteristics among which may be mentioned that of adjustment for keeping the casing in proper position relative to the periphery V of a wheel whereby the wheel can be used; that of preventing Water from flying from the periphery of the wheel, and that of pre venting the escape of water from the casing through that side which receives the shaft for revolving the wheel. A casing in accordance with my invention possesses all of the above characteristics and also includes a simple, durable and inexpensive closure for that side of the casing through which the wheel shaft or arbor extends, said closure having a novel adjustment which permits of the grinding opening of the casing being retained in proper relation relative to the exposed periphery of the grinding wheel.
The mechanical construction of my improved emery wheel casing will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of one side of the casing, showing my improved closure; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, partly broken away, showing sectional details on or about the line 11-11 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the opposite side of the casing from that shown in Fig. 1.
The safety guard comprises a cylindrical metallic casing 1 having a closed side or wall 2, an open side 3, a peripheral grinding opening 4, a rearwardly extending tangentially disposed discharge spout 5, and a slotted web 6 to facilitate attaching the casing to a The casing is also provided with peripheral apertured lugs 7 contiguous to the open side 3, and detach-ably connected to said lugs, by screw bolts or other fastening means, is a side plate 8 having an oblong or oval offset portion 9 providing clearance for the inner end of a shaft or. arbor 10 supporting an emery or grinding wheel 11 within the casing.
The closed side or wall 2 of the casing has an eccentric" opening 12 provided with an annular inset seat 13 for a circular rotatable side plate 14. To hold said plate upon the seat 13, the wall 2 is provided with opposed adjustable clips 15, and to facilitate the rotating of said plate there is a knob 16 on the outer side of said plate adjacent the periphery thereof.
The side plate 14 has an eccentric opening 17 provided with an annular seat and clips for another side plate 18, which has a knob 19. The annular seat and clips of the side plate 14 are similar to the annular seat and clips of the wall 2, said seats and clips constituting means for holding the plates 14 and 18 in an adjusted position relative to the casing.
The small plate 18 has an eccentric opening 20 and the outer side of said small plate also has a seat 21 for a flat ring or collar 22 which encircles the shaft or arbor 10. The ring or collar 22 is preferably made of felt or a yieldable material and while preventing water or detritus from passing through the opening 20, it also compensates for any inequality between the shaft 10 and the easing 1.
It is through the medium of the large and small eccentrically disposed plates 14 and 18 that adiustment can be made to properly position the emery or grinding wheel 11 relative to the casing 1, whereby the periphcry of the emery or grinding wheel will beexposed at the grinding opening 4 of the casing. These adjustments are made as the diameter of the emerv or grinding wheels decreases by wear, and the novel closure cooperates with the oval offset portion 9 of the detachable side wall 8 in providing clearance for the shaft or arbor 10. The detachable side wall 8 permits of the emery or grinding wheel being easily installed and adjustments of the closure can be quickly accomplished.
One embodiment of my invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modification as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. An'emery wheel casing having a wheel shaft extending through a side wall thereof, and plates ecoentric'ally disposed relative to each other permitting of adjustment of said wheel shaft relative to said casing.
2. Anvemerywheel casing having a wheel shaft extending through aside wall thereof, plates eccentrically disposed relative toe-ach' shaft extending through a side wall thereof,
plates eccentrica lly disposed-relative to each other and tOSdlCl. casing permitting of adjustrnent of said wheel shaft relative to said casing. and a flexible collar carried by one of said plates and encircling said wheel shaft.
4. A guard for grinding wheels supported by a shaft, comprising a casing having an offset portion providing clearance for an end of said shaft, and a closure having adjustable rotary plates permitting of adjustment of said shaft relative to said casing.
