To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that we, SAMUEL S. BUTTON and JAMES A. MCTAGGART, citizens of the United States, residents of Hanston, in the county of Hodgeman and State of Kansas, have made a certain new and useful Invention in feed-Cutter Attachments for Hand- Cars; and we declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apnertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure l is a side view of the invention as applied, parts being shown as raised, in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the carrier, the Scythe blades and adjacent parts. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the spring joint in the connecting rod partly in section.

The invention has relation to a weed cutter attachment for hand cars, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the hand car, designed to be motor driven and having located in rear thereof substantially horizontal, rearwardly diverging scythe blades or knives 3, 3, said blades being made of Crucible steel and extending laterally outward at each side of one rail of the railroad track, close to the ties, each blade having an upward bend Ll at its inner end, where it is bolted at 5 to the grooved carrier G, litting over the rail. This carrier 6 is bolted at 7 to the outer rear end of a supporting rod 8, said rod being at its inner end pivoted at 9 to the bracket l0 of the hand car. The pivot pin 9 is preferably made of wood. An adjusting lever ll is pivoted to the car at l2, and has a connecting rod 1B with the arm 8, said rod being at its inner end pivoted to the lever at ll and at its outer end loosely engaging a headed pin l5 of said arm. This lever enables the carrier and blades to be adjusted vertically, to avoid switches and other obstructions.

rlhe connecting rod is preferably made in two parte, its outer part 18 being smaller 1n cross section and litting within a seat 17 of the inner section, a coiled. spring 18 surrounding the outer section and bearing at its outer end against a cross pin 19 of said section, and at its inner end bearing against the inner section, a cross pin 2O of the outer section having movement in a slot 2l. of the inner section, whereby the connecting rod is made yieldable, to take up vibration, and yet, as the pin 2O normally rests against the lower end wall of the slot 2l, adjustment of the device is readily accomplished.

The grooved carrier is designed to rest upon the rail, to which it is held down by the spring 18, the lateral flanges of said carrier serving to prevent sidewise movement of the carrier and the spring allowing the carrier to yield upwardly in passing over any obstructions.

In order to avoid contact of the scythe blades with obstructions, or to hold said blades at the proper distance above the surface of the ties, each blade is provided with a rearwardly projecting rod 22, bent downward slightly below the Scythe blade and designed to ride over any obstruction and raise said blades above the same.

l. A weed cutter attachment for hand cars, comprising a carrier having engagement with the railway rail and provided with a lateral flange, a laterally extending scythe blade having at its inner end connection with said flange, a supporting rod having at its lower end connection with the top of said carrier and at its upper end a horizontal pivotal connection with the hand car, a rearwardly extending rod carried by said blade and adapted to raise the same over obstructions, and means for adjusting the carrier and blade vertically.

2.
