IMPROVEMENT IN ROCKERS FOR CRADLES, 80c.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,061, dated June 20, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD A. J AGKSON,

of Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rockers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my new article of manufacture consists in providing the bearing-surface of the rocker with an elastic strip made in a separate piece from the stops, with which it is combined and held in a plain groove in the rocker, near each end of which are secured the stops, which consist of two gum balls secured in sockets, the depth of which is equal to half the diameter of each ball.

To enable others skilled in the art to makeand use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawing which forms part of my specification, Figure l is a side View of a rocker provided with a gum or elastic shoe and stops. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same at line y of Fig. l. I

In the accompanying drawing, A represents the rocker, which may be constructed in any of the known forms, and secured to the cradle, crib, hobby-horse, and chair in the usual manner. In the under surface of the rocker is a groove, in which is secured a gum or elastic strip, B, and near each end of the rocker is secured a gum or elastic ball, which forms an elastic stop, 0.

The advantage of making the strip B separate from the stops 0 consists in avoiding the necessity of a large number of molds for forming the gum strips and stops, which is required when they are made in one piece. In such case a mold is necessary for each size of rocker, and the number of different sizes and forms as well as kinds of rockers is very great. Making the gum strip in one piece and the stops separate from the strips, as hereinbefore described, will enable the manufacturer to make the rocker cheaper, and if the strip B should wear out it can be replaced with a new strip without the loss of the stops 0.

The sockets for the stops 0 are first formed by a suitable tool, then the groove for the strip B is formed. By forming the sockets first a starting and finishing point is obtained for the cutting-bit of the plane or tool used for formin g the groove for the strip B. The strip B is first secured in its groove by small finishingnails or by a suitable cement then the stops O are secured by similar means in their sockets.

It will be observed that, by making the sockets for the stops 0 in depth equal to half the diameter of the stop, (which is a gum ball,) it will require but little to hold the stop 0 in its place, and that it cannot be forced sidewise.

The advantage of providing rockers with a gum or elastic shoe and stops, as hereinbefore described, consists in imparting to the cradle, crib, hobby-horse, and chair an easy, noiseless, and elastic motion, and an elastic rebound by the stops, adding thereby comfort and ease of motion to said articles, the value of which will be apparent when they are used on a hard floor or in the nursery-room. The creaking of rockers to the mother or nurse while trying to put a child to sleep is a source of great annoyance, and always very trying on the nerves of the sick and afiicted. This creaking of the rockers is, by the use of the gum or elastic shoe, entirely avoided.

I wish it clearly understood that I do not claim, broadly, arocker provided with an elastic bearing or stops.

Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is- A new article of manufacture, viz., a rocker provided with a plain grooveand sockets, in which are secured the strip B and stops 0, said strip and stops being in separate pieces from each other, as herein described.
