To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. SGHAEEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and vState of Chio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Extension- Drawer Construction, of which .the following is a full, clean-and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap and ecie'nt combination of parts for. so supporting a drawer in its cabinet that said drawer may be pulled entirely out' of the cabinet and still be suitably supported in a horizontal position; and which will permit the drawer to be entirely. separated from the cabinet Aand replacedl therein ,at will. The invention' consists in the combination of parts shown in thedrawingland hereinafter described and denitely pointed out in the `appended claims. i A
In the drawing, Figure l is a vertical sec-` tion which shows the cabinet, the drawer, and the means for supporting the latter,- said section being taken in the' plane indicated by line A-A on Fig. 2, and when the drawer is closed. Fig. 2 is an inside elevation of one side of the cabinet and the hanger supported thereby, when the latter is attached to the side of the cabinet. Fig.

The drawers slide into and out of the open front of the cabinet between side walls la, la, which are parts of the cabinet,'and above a floor lb which is also a part of the cabinet.
2 represents a drawer of any usual or desired lform,-2, 2a representing the vertical sides thereof, and 2b the bottom thereof.
3, 3 represent the two extension slides or hangers, one being located on each side of the drawer and between a sidewall 2a thereof 4and the adjacent side wall la of the l cabinet.
Each hanger is supported upon the adjacent side wall of the cabinet in such manner that it can slide forward and backward horizontally; and each of, these hangers' supports the adjacent side of the drawer in such manner that the drawer may` move horizontally forward and backward; relatively to the hanger, irrespective of the position of the hanger. The means by which the sides of the drawer and the hangers are so slidably supported are the same on both sides of the drawer, wherefore the following descriptions of the means on one side willfsuice.
T here is attached to the side wall of the cabinet a guide strip 4 which is preferably `made of sheet metal. The lower edge of this strip, after it is bent into shape, is cont1nuous from end to end; and the strip is .secured to adjacent side wall la of the cabinet by rivets, spot welding or other suitable means, with` the lower edge of this guide strip resting on the floor lb of the cabinet opening. The lower edge of this strip is bent inward and then upward to form the horizontal ange 4, and the upwardly extended fiange 4b, which latterflange is higher at the front end of the strip than it is at the rear end thereof, as is plainly apparent from Fig. 5. The strip 4 is much narrower, up and down, at its rear end than at its front end, as shown in Fig. 5. The upper edge of the narrow rear. part of this strip is bent inward to form a horizontal flangell". The wide front part of this strip has its upper edge bent inward and then downward to form a horizontal Llange 4d, and the vertical flange 4e. Likewise an ear 4f is bent upward from the rear end of the wide front part of this strip and serves as the means for connecting this part of the strip vto the side wall of the cabinet.
The hanger 3, of which Fig. 4 is an inside view,v has its lower edge bent inward and upward to form the 'horizontal -flange 3a and the upwardly exended vertical flange 3*. At the rear end of the hanger an' ear 3 is bent down in the same plane as that in which the flange 3b lies. The upper edge of this hanger is bent inward and then downward thereby forming the horizontal flange 3d and the vertical flange 3e. A roller 5 is rotatably mounted on a stud 5a which is rigidly fixed to and projects outwardly from the ear 3c, and this roller 5 moves in the guideway formed at the rear end of the strip 4 lying between the horizontal flanges 4a and 4c and normally resting upon'. the former, but capablef engaging the latter. A roller 6v is in the groove formed at the front end of the strip 4 between the body part thereof and the upturned flange 4", and is rotatably mounted upon a stud 6a which extends horizontall between and is fixed to said two parts. 'l`he lower edge of the hanger rests and rides upon this roller 6, while the upper edge of the hanger projects behind the flange 4e at the front edge of said strip.
Several rollers 7 are in the channel which is formed between the body part of the hanger 3 and the upturned flange 3* thereof, and each of these rollers is rotatably mounted on a stud 7 which extends horizontally between and is fixed to said two parts. On the side of the drawer a horizontal rail 8 is fixed by means f rivets, spot welding or the like,-that is to say, the upper edge of this rail is so fixed to the drawer, but the rail below the part so fixed to the drawer, is bent outward and then downward to form the vertical member 8a which is parallel to but at a slight distance from the lside of the drawer.- The extreme lower edge of this rail is bent outward to form the narrow flange 8" whose function is to" stiffen the rail. -When the drawer is assembled with respect to the hanger, the lower edge of this rail passes over the top edge of the upturned flange 3b on the hanger, and the lower edge of said rail rests and rides upon the several rollers 7 which are mounted as stated on the hanger.
Near the rear end of thedrawer abracket i turned flange 3. with a buffer 10 which is preferably made'of rubber and is secured to the inner side of the rear end of the strip 4.
. When the hanger has been pulled out as far as it can go a buffer 12, preferably made of rubber, which is fixed to the inner side of the rear end of said hanger, will engage the rear end of the flange 4d and be stopped. When the drawer has been pushed in as far as it should go, a shoulder, which maybe the rear end of the rail 8, which is fixed to the drawer, engages the same buffer 12 and is stopped thereby.
A bell crank lever 14 is pivoted to the inner face of the hanger at 'the extreme front end thereof, so that the vertical arm of said lever will lie in the path of a stopbracket 15 which is fixed to the outer side of the rail 8 slightly back of the middle of said rail. When, as the drawer is being pulled out this stop bracket 15 hits this down turned arm of the lever 14 the horizontal arm of said lever is engaging the top of the flange 3d on the hanger, and therefore lit is impossible that any pressure from the stop bracket shall swing said lever 14,.-so asto allow vany further forward-movement of the drawer. When, however, it is desired to remove the drawer from the cabinet this lever 14 may be swung on its pivot so 'that the arm thereof which normally hangs down swings rearward and upward. When it has reached a horizontal position, the -stop bracket 15 may pass `under it, and so permitthe removal of the drawer.
When, with the above described construction, the draweris pulledl out, it will usually move relative to the hanger, sliding on the rollers 74 until the stop bracket 15 engages v the lever 14. At this time the part of the drawer which is in front of the hanger and is therefore unsupported may overbalance that part of the drawer which is resting on rollers 7 in the hanger. If it does, the front end of the drawer willtip downward very slightly and until the bracket 9 engages the 'under surface of the flange 3d of the hanger.
By'stillfurther pulling out the drawer the hanger is caused to move outward and may continue so to move until the buffer 12 enof the weight of the hanger and the drawer mounted thereon will be carried bythe roller 6, but when the hanger is fully pulled out, the weight in front of this roller will exceed the weight behind it, and the front end of gages the rear end of the flange 4d. A part y the hanger will tip slightly ldownward and until the roller 5 at therear of the hanger en ages the flanges 4c of the strip 4.
aving described my invention, I claim:
l. In a device of the character described, the combination of a cabinet, a drawer therefor and the following parts on each side of the drawer, viz. two horizontal flanges fixed to the side wall of the cabinet lyin one over the other and extending forwar from a point near the rear of said cabinet, a roller mounted on the cabinet in front of said flanges, a hanger having a stra1ght lower edge which rests and rides on said rollerY and which has at its rear end a down turned flange, a roller mounted on the outer face of said down turned flange and lying between the said horizontal flanges on the cabinet,- said hanger having also an inwardly turned horizontal flange along its upper edge, a plurality of rollers mounted on the inner face of the hanger, a horizontal rail fixed'to and offset from the side of said drawer and resting on said rollers, and an offset bracket fixed to the drawer near the rear end thereof and lying beneath said horizontal flange on the hanger.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a cabinet, a drawer therefor and the vfollowing parts on each side of the drawer, lviz. two horizontal flanges fixed to the sidewalls of the cabinet lying one over the other and extending forward from a point near the rear of said cabinet, a roller mounted on the cabinet in front of said flanges, a hanger having a straight lower edge which rests and rides on said roller and which has` at its rear end a down turned flange, a roller mounted on the outer face of said down turned flange and lying between the saidA horizontal flanges on the cabinet,- said hangerhaving also an inwardly turned horizontal flange along its upper edge, a plurality of rollers mounted on the inner face of the hanger, a horizontal rail fixed to and offset from the side of said drawer and resting on said rollers, anoffset bracket fixed to the drawer near the rear end thereof and lying beneath said horizontal flange on the hanger, a buffer fixed to the cabinet behind and in the path of the down turned flange at the rear end of the hanger, a buffer fixed to the inner face of the'hanger near its rear end, `a shoulder fixed to the cabinet in front of and in the path of the last mentioned buffer, a shoulder on the drawer in the path of and in front of said buffer on the hanger, a stop fixed to the side of the drawer, and a stop on the hanger in front of and in the path of the stop on said drawer.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a cabinet, a drawer therefor and the following parts on each side of the drawer, viz. a sheet metal guide strip fixed to the side wall of the cabinet, which 1 strip is narrow at its rear end and wider at its front end, the lower edge of said strip being bent inward to form a horizontal flange and upward to form a vertical flange, and the narrow part of said strip having its upper edge bent inward to form a horizontal flange, and the upper edge of the wide part of said strip being bent inward and then downward, a roller mounted on the inner face of said strip near the front end thereof, a hanger having horizontal top and bottom edges which are bent inwardto form horizontal flanges and then toward each other to form vertical flanges, and said hanger having at its rear end a down turned flange which lies in the plane of the vertical flange along the lower edge of said hanger, a roller mounted on the outer face of said down turned flange and lying between the horizontal flanges at the rear end of said guide strip, and the lower edge of said hanger resting at its front end on the roller mounted at the front end of the guide strip, a plurality of rollers mounted on the inner face of the hanger, an offset horizontal rail xed to the side of the drawer and resting at its lower edge on said plural rollers, an offset bracket fixed to the side of the drawer and extending beneath the horizontal flange along the top edge of said cabinet.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a cabinet, a drawer therefor and the following parts on each side of the drawer, viz. a sheet metal guide strip fixed to the side wall of the cabinet, which strip is narrow at its rear end and wider at its front end, the* lower edge of said strip being bent inward to form a horizontal flange and upward to form a vertical flange, and the narrow part of said strip having its upper end bent inward to form a horizontal flange and the upper edge of the wide part of said strip being bent inward and then downward, a roller mounted on the inner face of said strip near the front end.thereof, a hanger having horizontal top and bottom edges, which are bent inward to form horizontal flanges and then toward each other to form vertical flanges, and said hanger having at its rear end a down turned flange which lies in the plane ofthe vertical flange along the lower edge of said hanger, a roller mounted on the outer face of said down turned flange and lying between the horizonside of the drawer and resting at its lower
