Toull whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS AROBERT GIDLETT PARKER, a subject or the King of theUnited Kingdom of GreatBritain and Ireland, and residing at Linotypean'd'Machinery Works, Broadheath, in the county of Chester, England, have invented newaml useful Improvements in or Relating to Apparatus for Printing Late News in *Web- Printing'Presses or'for other Purposes, of which the followingis a specificationg i This invention relates to apparatus, for printing late news in web printing presses adapted to print on a plurality ofdi'lfe'rent webs, and it has for its object to' provide means for printing late news'on any offsuch webs, and capableof'being readily adjusted as a complete entity, from one position to another, accordingtothe particular web on which the said late news'is be P The "invention will'be hereinafter described with referenceftoth'e accompanying drawings, which illustrate, "as a conven'lent example, a late news printing apparatus ac- I cording to the present invention adapted to print on any of three different 'webs, "receiving their main'impression from threeprint= mg units located;one vertically above another, Figure '1 being a 'side elevation and Fig.2 an. elevation aslseen from the right hand side of Fig. 1, of "such apparatus; and Fig, 3, a horizontal section show ng certa n "details of the apparatus.
In order toeifect the printingof late news according too'ne of the known methods adoptedfor that purpose, the particular web on ;which thesameis to appear, "after having received the mainimpression hitherto from the respective ordinary printing unit,
is; led throughif'whatisknown'as a fud e apparatus, which is virtually a second printing-unit, so positioned relatively to the ordinary printing unit'that theimpression made by it on the web In Fig. 1 of thedraw'ings, the three'w bs l, 2, 3, are shown as traveling in the 3 direction indicated by the-respective arrows, from -the the fudge appa- I will be orrectly located in "the column or space left *for its reception.

The before-mentioned shaft 7 and the shaft l 3, to which latter the fudge head 5 is splined, are both rotatably supported in bearingsat respectively opposite ends of the crossfr'ame 9, and theseshafts are rotated in respectively opposite directions by interit can be readily I a 'rneshi g gears,'-l4lonthe shaft 7,*and 15 on the shaft lithe latter shaft receiving rotary motlon from a mitergear l6 fast-there on and meshing with a corresponding miter gear "17 journaled in a bearing '18 fast to the frainefl9, which 'is verti'cally adjustable as hereinafter described. The, miter gear 17 issplined to'a verticalshaft 19 "so that the rotativ'e connection between these two members will be maintained for an positions of the frame 9, and consequently the shafts 7 and-'13; will likewiserbe maintained in con *stant rotative connection with the said Ver -tical shaft 19, which latter is itself rotated jient *means, not represented v in thedrawings. I
by any con've The vertically adjustable frame are in dovetail connection, see particularly Fig. 3,

Aspreviously mentioned, the before-dc; scribed fudge or late news printing-apparatusis shown in position to print upon the web 2, and when it is desired that the-late upon. either theweb l or the. web 3'instead of. the webi2, the crankhandle 27 is rotated in the direction necessary-for raising or loweringthe vertically adjustable H frame '9, this operation bringing the twov cylinders L and 5vinto one connection with the crossf-rame tating the verticaLad ustment of the fudge .tus and late newsprinting apparatus? as orother of the positions in which they are shown in dot-and-dash lines at the'topand bottom of Fig.2, it being understoodthat this adjustment is made before the ' webs 1, 2, and 3, are threaded from the ordinary printing units to the folding mechanism; The transverseadjustment of" the before-described fudge apparatus along the vertically adjustableframe 9 provides, for [the printmg of the latelnew's in different columns of the printed web, as a1 ready wellunderStOQd in the art.
,If desired, suitable; counterbalaneing weights or other meansmay 9' for faciliapparatus, and v the vertical screws, instead of being rotated by. hand, may be rotatfidaby motor. Further, instead of the" vertical adjustment being efiected by the beforedescribed screws 21, this adjustment maybe racks and pinions, or by lifting tackle comprising cables,} guide pulleys therefor, and manually or .otherwise rotat- ,ing the. drums.

adapted, to adjust l adap ed which the arrangement 'hereinbefore de scribed as the example tion, the sidefram'es 20 will'be correspondingly deviatedfroin the vertical so that the fudge apparatus will, when moved along tion perpendicularto the direction of travel selected for illustraof that part of the web on which the late webs from .the printing units-travel in a vertical. direction atthe just nained part, thentheside framesQO would be arranged so that, when requiredv to be adjusted for q printingon a different web, the fudgeapparatus would be moved horizontally. Again, in the case: in which the web travels in an inclined direction atthepart toibe printed on by the late news printing apparatus, then would be arranged so thatthe adjustmentv of the said apparatus would be in ,an inclined direction perpendicular:.to the aforesaid inclined direction 10f travelof the web.
From the foregoing, it will" be seen that, i 7
whether the fudge apparatus beadjusted to print onthe web 1, or the web 2, or the web 3, such adjustment will be effected without in anyway disturbingthe register between that apparatus and the'ordinary printing unit, and consequentlyawill notinvolve'the loss of time which has beenincurred in effecting a corresponding adjustment in con nection with late-news printing apparatus of previously. known censtruct1on-= I If desired, the apparatus hereinbefore described (as a late news printing apparatus with u t l mod a be em: printing matter} other than late news, in a d stinct ve color, and it is to] be understood thatthe terms fudge apparacan,
hereinemployed are intendedto include any dinary impressions, *as has been hereinbefore such alternative-use or modifications.
