WIRE-WRAPPING DEVICE.
Application filed May 27, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, MILTON MoGAR'rnR and RICHARD VENIs, citizens of the United States, residing at Colfax, in the county of Boone, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful ire-Wrapping Device, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to wlre wrapping devices, and is particularly an 1mprovement over the wire working device disclosed in the patent to Milton McCarter, N 0. 1,144,217, ranted June 22, 1915. I
It is the ob ect of the invention to provide a wire wrapping device embodying two cooperable rotary members assembled with one another and with the frame in a unique manner, whereby when one member is rotated in one direction, the slots of the two members will be brought into registration for receiving the wire, and when the said member is rotated in the other direction, the slots will be brought out of'registration, to lock the wire in place when the wrapping or twisting action is started.
It is also within the scope of the invention to improve the implement generally in its construction and details, to enhance the utility thereof, and to render the same comparatively simple, compact and inexpensive in construction, as well as rendering the device thoroughly practical and efficient in use. With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description.
proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

end of the arm or ear 2. The free end of the other arm of the frame 1 is provided with an open slot 4 for receiving the wire. The intermediate or yoke portion of the frame 1 is provided with an outstanding hub or sleeve 5 through which a spindle or shaft 6 is journaled, the outer or projecting end of the shaft or spindle 6 having a square tapered portion 6 for the engagement of a crank brace or other suitable contrivance for rotating the shaft 6. A bevel gear 7 is secured to that end of the shaft 6 within the frame 1 and co6perates with the rotary twisting or winding head 8 j ournaled within the opening 3 of the arm 2. This twisting head 8 embodies an inner disk 9 journaled within the opening 3, and having a bevel gear 10 intermeshing with the bevel gear 7, and the head 8 includes a second disk 11 journaled within the opening 3 and bearing lightly against the disk 9. Arcuate plates 12 and 13 are secured to the inner and outer sides of the arm or ear 2 and have their edges slightly overlapping the remote faces of the disks 9 and 10, respectively, to retain the disks for rotation within the opening 3. The disk 9 and its gear 10 are provided with a radial slot 14, and the disk 11 is also provided with a radial slot 15. The side of the disk 9 adjacent the disk 11 is provided with an arcuate slot or groove 16 receiving a lug 17 projecting from that side of the disk 11 adjacent the disk 9, whereby when the lug 17 stiikes one end of the slot 16, the radial slots 14 and 15 of the inner and outer disks 9 and 11, respec tively, will be brought into registration.
The outer side of the disk 11 is provided peripheries of the disks 9 and 11. The shaft or spindle 6 is then rotated properly in any suitable manner, for rotating the disk 9 clockwise, as seen in Fig. 3, and this will cause the disk 9 to rotate with respect to the disk 11 until the lug 17 strikes the respective end of the slot 16, to bring the slots 14: and 15 into registration. Then, when the rotation of the disk 9 is continued, both of the slots 14 and 15 of the two disks will be brought into registration with the entrance slot 2 and the wire will be received by the slots 14- and 15, and the wire will also be received by the slot 1. It is of course evident that before applying the device to the wire, the slotsltand 15 may be brought into registration with one another and into registration with the slot 2 so that the device may be readily applied to the wire, but the above described method of applying the device to the wire is an exceedingly simple and convenient one. The twisting operation is then carried out by engaging the notched lug 18 with the end portion 21 of another wire which is to be twisted or wrapped upon the Wire 20, and in which event the shaft 6 is rotated in the opposite direction,to rotate the disk 9 correspondingly. The disk 11 will be momentarily held stationary by its frictional engagement with the arm 2 and plate 13, while the disk 9 rotates through an arc defined by the slot 16, in which eventthe lug 17 will strike the respective end of the slot 16, to carry the disk 11 with the disk 9. In this manner, the slots 14: and 15 of the two disks are brought out of registration, to automatically lock the Wire 20 within the twisting head 8, whereby the device will be properly held upon the wire 20 during the twisting operation. When the head 8 is rotated, the end portion 21 of the second 7 wire will be twisted or wrapped around the wire 20 to complete the splice being made, or the work being done. The device maybe readily removed by again rotating the shaft 6 so that the slots 1% and 15 both register with the slot 2, so that the device may be readily drawn off of the wire 20.
The present implement may be employed in different capacities for working wire or equivalent elements, and is particularly dej signed for wrapping or winding one wire or portion about another for splicing or-the.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
in connection with the limited movement allowed between the disks, provides for the automatic locking of the device upon the wire as aforesaid.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a wire working implement, a pair of disks having radial slots adapted to be brought into and out of registration and having interengageable means whereby the disks have limited oscillatory movement relative to one another, one disk being adapted to be rotated, and the other disk having wire engaging means.
2. In a wire working implement, a frame, av pair of disks journaled within the frame and having radial slots adapted to be brought into and out of registration a'nd interengageable means whereby the disks have limited oscillatory movement relative to one another, the framehaving an entrance slot with which said slots are adapted to register, one disk having wire engaging means, andmeans-carried by the frame and cooperable with the other disk for rotating the same. 4. In a wire working implement, a frame having an opening and an entrance slot extending from said opening, a pair of disks journaled within said opening adjacent one another, arcuate plates secured to the frame and partially overlapping the remote sides of said disks, the disks having radial slots adapted to be brought into and out of'registration, one disk having an arcuate slot and the other disk having a lug received bysaid arcuate slot, one 'disk having wire-engaging means, and means carried by the frame for rotating the other disk.
