Application filed October 1, 1914. Serial No. 864,489.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MILTON MOOARTER, a citizen of the United States,.residingin the county of Boone and State oflndiana, have invented a new and useful Wire-Working Device, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to a wire working device, and aims to provide a novel and improved implement for use in splicing or wrapping wires in making fences, or for other purposes.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a wire working device of unique construction, which is applicable to a wire in a novel manner, and which embodies means for wrapping or twisting another wire therearound in an efficient and convenient manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a wire working implement, a rotary twisting device having means for receiving a wire, and embodying means for automatically locking the wire therein when the twisting or winding action is started.
It is also within the scope of the invention, to improve the implement generally in its construction, to enhance the utility thereof.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the 7 details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made with in the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of the device, as in use. Fig. 2 is a front view of the device, portions being broken off. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 3.
In carrying out the present invention, there is provided a U-shaped frame or body 1, onearm of which is in the form of an ear 2 having a circular opening or bore 3 and an entrance slot 2 extending from the said opening to the free end of the arm or ear 2. The free end of the other arm of the frame or body 1, is provided with an open slot 4: for receiving a wire, as will hereinafter appear. The intermediate or yoke portion of the frame 1 is provided with an outstanding hub or sleeve 5, through which a shaft or spindle 6 is journaled having a squared tapered portion 6 for the engagement of a crank brace, a beveled gear 7 being keyed or otherwise secured upon the end of the shaft 6 within the frame 1. Any suitable crank brace may be employed for conveniently rotating the beveled gear 7.
Carried by the arm or ear 2 of the frame is a rotary twisting or winding member or head 8 comprising a beveled gear 9 intermeshing with the beveled gear 7 and having a boss or hub 10 journaled within the opening 3 and flush with the outer face of the arm or ear 2, the gear 9 resting against the inner face of the said arm or ear 2. The rotary member or head 8 also includes a collar or annular member 11 resting snugly against the outer face of the boss 10, and secured to the said boss by means of screws or other securing members 12 engaged through the collar 11 and taking into the boss 10 of the beveled'gear 9. The collar 11 is provided with an annular outstanding flange 13 bearing against the outer face of the arm or ear 2 to hold the beveled gear 9 in place, but to enable the said gear to rotate freely without moving longitudinally.
The beveled gear 9 and its boss 10, and the collar 11 are provided with alining radial slots 14 and 15 which are adapted to register with the slot 2 of the ear 2, and the gear 9 and its boss 10 are provided with a central opening or bore 16 alining with the opening or bore of the collar 11. A sleeve or tubular member 17 is journaled within the bores of the beveled gear 9 and collar 11 to oscillate freely therein, and is provided along one side with a slot 18 adapted to register with the slots lt and 15 when the sleeve or tubular member 17 is rotated properly. The sleeve 17 is provided with a radial arm 19 at its outer end, and working within an arouate recess or cut away portion 20 provided in the outer face of the collar 11.
A disk or plate 21 is secured to the outer V the collar 11', with an arcuate slot 24: and the shank of a hook 25 extendsthrough the slot 241- and is riveted or otherwise secured to thearm 19 of the sleeve 17. The arm 19 7 working within the recess 20 and the shank of the hook working within the slot 2 1, will enable the sleeve 17 to oscillate with respectto the bevel gear 9 and collar 11, and the oscillatory movement of the said sleeve will also be limited properly. The parts are so arranged, that when the arm 19 is swung in one direction, counter clockwise as seen in Fig.2, theslot 18 of the sleeve 17 will be brought into alinement or registration with the slotslt, l5 and 23, as suggested in Fig.
1, andwhen the'arm 19 is swung in the other direction, the slot '18 of the sleeve 17 will be brought out of registration with the said slots 14, 15 and 23.
In operation, to apply the device to a wire26, the arm 19 of the sleeve 17 is swung in the properdirection to bring the slot 18 of the sleevein register with the slots 14, 15 and 28, and the shaft 6 is then rotated by a crank brace to bring the said slots in register with the slot 2 of the ear 2. This will permit the'wire 26to be received by the said slots for causing the wire to be engaged within the sleeve or tubular tumbler 17, and the wire 26 may also be simultaneously'engaged by the slot 4 for holding the frame 1 against swinging movements about the axis of the shaft 6 as a center. The numeral 27 designates a second wire which-is spliced to the wire 26, the end 28 of the wire 27 being engaged by the hook 25 of the arm 19, to
.wind or wrap the end portion of the wire 27 about the wire 26, as at 29. To accomplish this result, the crank brace is rotated in the proper direction, which will rotate the head 8, and the hook 25 engaging the end 28 of the wire 27, will hold the arm 19 still until the head 8 has rotated sufficiently to carry the arm 19 with it.
As will be apparent, the present contrivance may be employed in various manners for wire working purposes, and is particu larly adapted for Wrapping or winding one wire or portion about another for splicing or similar purposes. The salient or cardinal feature of the invention resides in the provision of the sleeve or wire-receiving member 17 having a limited movement with respect to the rotary member or head 8, and having means for the engagement of a wire whereby. when the rotary member or head 8 is rotated, the slot of the sleeve 17 will be automatically brought out of registration with the slot of the said head for locking 3 the wire within the sleeve andhead. Theother advantages and attributes of the pres ent invention will be obvious from the foregoing, taken in connection'with the draw-' ing, without further comment being deemed necessary. V

In a wire working implement, a rotary head having a slot, an oscillatory sleeve mounted within the said head to oscillate freely therein and having a slot adapted to be brought into and out of registration with the aforesaid slot, the head being adapted to be rotated, and the sleeve having an arm provided, with wire-engaging means, and means for limiting the movement of said arm.

In a wire-working implement, a-rotary head having a bore and a slot leading therefrom, an oscillatory sleeve mounted within thesaid bore and having a slot adapted to be brought into and out of registration with the aforesaid slot, the sleeve having an arm at one end, and a plate secured to the said head and over the said end ofthe sleeve to hold the sleeve in place, the plate having a slot, and the said arm having wire-engaging means projecting through the said slot.
