wires srarns PATENT orrron JEFFERSON I. WILLIAMS, 0F MOUNT VERNON, TEXAS.
PLOW.
Application filed February 5, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEFFERSON L. \VIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Mount Vernon, in the county of Franklin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows and particularly to an attachment for securing the heel sweeps to plows and for bracing the said heel sweeps.
An object of this invention is to provide a brace of the character stated secured in place simultaneously with and by the same means employed for holding the heel sweep, the said brace having novel means whereby it may be adjusted to accommodate itself to heel sweeps of different dimensions and where the blades of the heel sweeps are at different angles to each other.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation, partly in section of a plow with a heel sweep having a brace; Fig. 2 illustrates a top plan view of a plow with the heel sweep and brace applied; and Fig. 8 illustrates a view in perspective of the brace.
In these drawings I have shown a fragment of a plow consisting of a combined beam and standard a and fragments of handles 5 and these parts being of any ordinary construction are not described in detail. The heel sweep 6 has a central portion secured to the plow standard by a bolt 7 and said sweep has the diverging blades 8 and 9. The angles of the said blades to the central portion thereof may be varied in different heel sweeps and it is the purpose of the inventor to provide means for bracing these wings so that they will withstand unusual pressure when in use.
In carrying out the invention the brace is formed preferably of a single piece of metal having its central portion provided Specification of Letters Patent.

with a loop 10 bent at such an angle with relation to the other portion thereof that it may lie against the central portion of the heel sweep and it is secured thereto by the bolt 7 which holds the sweep in place. The arms 11 and 12 of the brace extend approximately parallel but they are movable with relation to each other so that they may be brought closer together or separated and to that end two arms are connected by a screw or bolt 13 with the nuts 1 1 and 15 thereon, one of which bears against one of the arms and the other of which bears against the other of said arms. By rotating the nuts on the bolt, the arms may be spread or they may be allowed to approach, according to the direction of rotation of the said nuts. In the construction of the brace, I prefer that the metal shall be of such rigidity as to cause the arms to approach each other when the nuts are turned toward the central portion of the bolt whereas the nuts serve to force the arms apart when they are moved toward the ends of the bolt. From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the arms may be adjusted and the purpose of this adjustment is to cause their extremities 16 and 17 to brace the heel sweep.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the extremities provided with shoulders or shoes 18 and 19 respectively, which engage the upper edges.
By reason of the construction of the brace, it is apparent that it may be used in connection with different plows and different heel sweeps since its adjustable nature permits its being so interchanged.
I claim:
1. In a plow, a heel sweep having a central portion adapted to be bolted to a plow standard, said heel sweep having diverging wings, a brace having arms and a central loop standing at an angle to the arms, the said loop being adapted to be secured to the central portion of the heel sweep, means for adjusting the arms with relation to each other, and extremities on the arms standing at angles thereto for engaging the wings of the heel sweep.
2. In a plow, a heel sweep having a central portion adapted to be bolted to a plow standard, said heel sweep having diverging wings, a brace having arms and a central loop standing at an angle to the arms, the said loop being adapted to be secured to the 7 central portion of the heel sweep, a bolt In testimony whereof, I affix my signature connecting the arms, nuts threaded on the in the presence of two Witnesses.
bolt and engaging the arms for forcing them apart, said arms being of such rigidity as to JEFF WILLIAMS approach each other upon removal of pres- WVitnesses:
sure thereon, and extremities'on the said I C. R. HILL,
arms for engaging the heel sweeps. 7 JAMES D. LAWRENCE.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
