To all w from it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo M. MERCER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Millwood, in the county of l/Vare and State of Georgia. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Means for Churns, of which the following is'a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certaln improve ments in driving means for churns; and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved means of this general charac ter which may be conveniently assembled and which may be operated with a'maximum of efliciency.
Another object of the invention is to provide a means of this character which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, ointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a driving means for a churn constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical fragmentary elevation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 1 is a side elevation, the parts being broken away and in section.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 indicates the foundation upon which are mounted the spaced vertically disposed brackets 2. Horizontally disposed shafts 3 are arranged between the brackets 2 and having their ends mounted therein. Mounted upon one of the shafts 3 is a gear 4 which is adapted to mesh with a second gear 5 mounted upon a horizontal shaft 6 arranged in parallel relation with the shaft 3. Mounted upon the shaft 6 and arranged at one side of the gear 5 is a pinion 7 which is controlled by means of the pivoted escapement pawl 8 arranged just beneath the pinion 7.
Mounted upon the first shaft 3 are the springs 9, which when placed under tension will rotate said shaft, which in turn will r0 tate the large gear 10 mounted thereon. Mounted upon the second one of the shafts 3 I disclosed herein is especially is a small gear 11 which is adapted to mesh with the large gear 10 to rotate said shaft. Mounted upon the second shaft 3 is a bevel gear 12 which is adapted to mesh with the horizontally disposed bevel gear 13 mounted upon the stub shaft 1%. The shaft 14 em tends downwardly through the foundation 1 and upon the lower end thereof is mounted a bevel gear 15 which is adapted to mesh with a similar gear 16 mounted upon the op erating rod 17.
Secured to the lower side of the foundation 1 is a bracket 18, substantially L-shape in form, the horizontal portion of which is provided with an opening 19 in which the operating rod 17 is adapted to rotate. The upper end of the rod 17 extends upwardly through the foundation and is provided with a. head portion 20 to suitably support the rod. The lowerend of the rod proiects downwardlv into the tubular dasher rod 21 and is securely fastened to the dasher rod by means of the set screw 22. It is also to be observed that the rod 17 has suitably secured thereto intermediate its length the collar 28 adapted to engage the upper surface of the foot of the bracket 18.
In winding the spring 9, I provide a suitable key 23 which is fitted over the outer end of the shaft 6 whereby said shaft may be rotated which in turn will rotate the gears 4: and 5 and the shaft 3, thus winding the spring 9. In winding the spring, the esoapement pawl 8 is held out of engagement with the pinion 7 by means of the pivoted cam member 24. The operating rod 17 is also held against rotary movement, during the winding operation, by means of the threaded rod 25 which is mounted in the vertical portion of the bracket 18 and is provided upon its inner end with a head member 26 adapted to frictionally engage the rod 17 to prevent rotation of the same during the winding operation. The outer end of the rod 25 is provided with a hand wheel 27 whereby the same may be quickly and easily rotated.
The specific form of operating mechanism adapted for the operation of churns of the rotary dasher type. In the present illustration, I have shown a common form of churn which comprises the body 28 and in which is mounted the rotary dasher 29 secured to the lower end of the dasher rod 21. It will be understood that the device may be modified so that the operating mechanism will operate a reciprocating churn dasher as well as a rotary dasher.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that I have provided a simple and durable and effective operating mechanism for churns, which will be positive in its operation and at the same time may be manufactured at an extemely low cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claim. I
What I claim is A device of the character described includ- 1 ing a suitably supported foundation, an operating rod extending through the foundation below the same, a bracket depending from the foundation and having a foot through which said rod extends, collars carried by the rod coacting with the upper surfaces of the foundation and foot of the bracket for maintaining the rod in operative position, rotating means for the rod coacting therewith at a point intermediate the foundation and the foot of the bracket, said means including a shaft extending above the foundation, and operating means forithe shaft coacting with the portion of the shaft above the foundation.
