SPRING PUMPING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
Application filed June 20, 1912. Serial No. 204,783.
To all whom z't may concern Be it known that we, Emvnsr G. HAYS and SAMUEL B. RUssnLL, citizens of the United States, residing at Holdenville, 1n the county of Hughes and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Pumpmg-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. a
This invention relates to spring motors, and has for its object the production of an efficient spring motor which may be used in connection with pumps.
The principal object of this invention is the production of a simple and eflicient pendulum mechanism which may be so constructed as to change the center of gravity, so as to adjust the same to efliciently operate.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient attachment for connecting apump rod with the motor.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :F igure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pump rod engaging frame. Fig. 4: is a rear view of the spring retaining casing. Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the joint of the pendulum supporting rod, and the weight carrying arm. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the pendulum weight and rod. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the adjusting connection of the pendulum rod and weight supporting arm.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the motor frame comprises a pair of side members 1 which are braced by means of transversely extending members 2.
The main driving gear 3 is carried by the side frames 1 and is supported upon a main driving shaft 3, to which shaft is connected a coil spring 4, which coil spring has one end thereof fixedly secured to the casing as indicated at 5, and the other end fixedly secured to the shaft 3. A housing or protector casing 6 is carried by the frame so as to limit the expansion of the spring 4. An auxiliary drive gear 7 is supported upon the frame by means of a shaft 8, and adjacent this auxiliary drive gear 7 is carried a small pinion 8, which meshes with the main drive gear 3'. An auxiliary pinion 9 is carried by the shaft 10 and upon this shaft 10 is also positioned a ratchet wheel 11. This auxiliary pinion 9 meshes with the gear teeth formed upon the auxiliary gear 7 The outer end of the shaft 7 is provided with a squared portion 12 for receiving a winding key and the main gear 3 carries a ratchet gear 13, which gear is engaged by means of a dog 14 for preventing the rotation of the gear or the unwinding of the spring while the spring is being wound. A dog retaining spring 15 is carried by the gear wheel 3, and engages the dog 14 for holding the same in engagement with the ratchet 13.
A weight supporting or carrying arm 15 is carried by the shaft 16, and this arm is provided with a forwardly extending member 17 upon which is adjustably mounted a weight 18. This weight 18 is provided with a projecting lip 19 which overhangs the forwardly extending portion 17 of the arm 15, and this weight is held upon the forwardly extending portion 17 by means of a set screw 20. The lower end of the weight sup porting arm 15 is provided with a laterally projecting finger 21, which is spaced from the bifurcated end 22 of the weight supporting arm 15. A pendulum rod 23 is suspended from the lower end of the weight supporting arm 15, as indicated in Fig. 1, and a ball weight 24 is adjustably mounted upon the pendulum rod 23, and is held in an adjusted position by means of the nut 25. A socket 26 is carried by the pendulum rod 23, and within this socket is secured the inner end of the threaded adjusting screw 27, in such a manner as to allow the screw to have a free swinging movement relative to the pendulum rod 23. An operating knob 28 is formed upon the threaded adjusting screw 27 for allowing the rotation thereof whereby the pendulum rod 23 may be spaced in an adjusted position away from the finger 21. From the foregoing description, it will be seen that through the means of this adjusting screw, the center of gravity of the plunger rod may be changed. A tripper member 29 is keyed to the shaft 16, and is provided with a plurality of fingers 30, which fingers engage the ratchet wheel 11 for controlling the oscillation of the weight carrying arm 15.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that as the main driving gear 3' is rotated the auxiliary gear 7 Will also be rotated, Which, in turn, Will drive the ratchet Wheel 11 through the medium of the pinion 9, and the pinions 8' causing the Weight carrying arm 15 to be oscillated by means of the escapement lever 29.
A pump engaging frame 31 engages the pump rod 82, and this pump engaging frame 31 comprises a pair of parallel members 33 Which are connected by means of transversely extending members 34: as illustrated in Fig. 3. A connecting link member 35 is carried by the upper end of the pump rod engaging frame 31 and is connected to a protruding arm 36 carried by the shaft 16, and it Will be seen that as the Weight supporting arm 15 is oscillated reciprocating motion Will be imparted to the pump rod, and pump rod engaging frame 31.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and durable device has been produced, for the purpose specified, and it should be understood that the inven tion may be modified in the detail mechanical construction Without departing from the spirit of the invention. It should be understood that the main drive gear 3 is loose upon the shaft 3, and is only capable of being rotated in one direction With the Copies of this patent may be obtained for shaft 3, through the medium of the ratchet Wheel 13.
What is claimed is 1. In a device having a frame, a Weight supporting arm on said frame, a pendulum rod on said arm, a laterally projecting finger carried by said arm, a socket on said rod, an adjustable screw passing through said finger and engaging in said socket for adjusting the angle of said pendulum relative to said arm and changingthe center of gravity thereof, a laterally extending arm associated with said Weight supporting arm and adapted to be connected With operable mechanism.
2. In a device of the class described comprising a frame, a Weight supporting arm on said frame, a pendulum rod .secured to said arm, a. Weight carried by said pendulum rod, and means formed upon said rod and engaging said Weight for shifting the center of gravity of said pendulum rod.
