To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAoosSoKoLov, a citizen of the United States, residing in Bronx, city of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrenches, and resides more particularly in a wrench adjustable to take nuts, bolts, etc., of different sizes, means being provided for engaging and disengaging the jaw adjusting means, to the end that the adjustable jaw may be quickly moved to a new position, the :adjusting means reengaged, and further adjustment procured through the usual adjusting means; and to the further end that the nut or bolt may be tightened by simply oscillating the handle, without removal of the wrench from the nut or bolt. My invention resides in a wrench of the character hereinafter described.
For an illustration of one of the forms my invention may take reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the "wrench. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, similar to Fig. l, with the adjusting means disengaged. Fig. '4 is a sectional view through parts shown in Fig. 1, with the adjusting means in engagement. 'Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken :on the line X-X of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line YY of Fig. 4.
H is the handle member terminating in the parts 1 and 2 between which is the notch or space 3. The wrench head 1 has the integral jaw 5 and back of the jaw 5 the head i consists of thetwo cheek members 4, 4E separated by a space 6 into which extends the parts 1 and 2 of the handle member H.
The head i is pivoted to the member 2 upon the screw or pin 7, and upon this pivot 7 the head may partake of pivotal movement as to the position indicated in Fig. 3, for purposes hereinafter stated. In the trans verse channel or opening 8 in the head 4 is slidable the bar 9 with which the movable jaw 10 is integral, the sides of the jaw 10 being roughened by ribs 11 or otherwise to afiord a suitable grip for the hand or 111- gers. On its inner edge the bar 9 has'worm or rack teeth 12 adapted to engagerwith the screw thread or worm 13 on the member let rotatable upon the pin 15 having bearings in the members 16 011 the member 17, the members 16 being more or less resilient and pressing against the ends of the member 14 to cause suiiicient friction to prevent the member M from easily rotating. In the member 17 is a notch 18 into which freely eXtends the pin 19 extending at right angles to theplane of the member 20 pivoted to the handle H on the pin or screw 21. Through the wing or member 1 on handle H is a perforation having a circular end 22 and a square end 28 as shown in Fig. i. In the cheeks @L, 1' of the head 4 are circular openings 24 and 25 into which extends the rotary locking member or pin 26, half of the pin 26 being cut away at its middle where it extends through the member 1, such pin 26 having the section at this point shown at 27 in Fig. 4. At its larger end the pin 26 has a rib or other means 28 by which the pin may be turned.
As seen in Figs. 1 and 6, the member '9 has a hole or longitudinal slot 29 in which is disposed a helical spring 30 whose one end abuts against the member 9 and whose other end abuts against the member 31 held by screw 32 to the head at, the member 31 having a pin 33 extending into the spring 30. With the parts in position the spring 30 opposes the movement of jaw 10 away from jaw 5.
ll-he operation is as follows: lhe pin 26 is rotated a half'revolution from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 5 in which position the notch 27 will allow the head 1 to rotate in a counter-clockwise direction upon its pivot 7 as viewed in Figs. 1, 3 and 4 because the edge 23 of the member 1 can enter such notch. The head so rotated is shown in Fig. 3, and in this position the worm 13 is disengaged from the teeth 12, and the operator may then pull the jaw 10 downwardly, as viewed in Figs. 1, 3 and i, in opposition to spring 30, to allow placing the jaws 10 and 5 upon a nut or bolt. When the operator releases the jaw 10 the spring 30 will move it against the nut or bolt. Then the nut or bolt may be turned by moving the handle H downwardly, and in so doing will restore the head to the positions indicated in Figs. 1 and 3. If the parts should not take this position of Figs. 1 and 3 due to engagement of the worm 13 on the top edge of the teeth 12, the worm 13 may be slightly rotated until complete mesh occurs. Continuing downward movement on the handle II will turn the nut or bolt. In moving the handle I-I upwardly the head will again swing upon its pivot 7, and the jaw 10 being disengaged from the worm 13, the jaw 10 will ride over an angle of the nut or bolt and engage upon the next side of the nut or bolt, whereupon the handle H may be moved downwardly again to further rotate the nut or bolt. And so on in successive movements the head will rotate upon its pivot 7, disengage the adjusting means, and again reengage it and turn the nut or bolt. This action makes it unnecessary to lift the wrench from the nut or bolt to place it upon a new face, it only being necessary to oscillate the handle H backwardly and forwardly through an. angular distance equal to the difference in angles between the faces of the nut or bolt. If, however, it is desired to convert the wrench into a socalled solid wrench, the pin 26 is turned to the position shown in Fig. 4 with the worm 13 in mesh with the teeth 12. With the parts so locked rotation of the member 14 will adjust the jaw 10 in the well known manner.
What I claim is:
1. In a wrench, a handle member, a head member movable thereon. and carrying a fixed jaw, an adjustable jaw on said head, means carried by and movable with respect to said handle member for engaging said second jaw, movement of said means while in engagement with said second jaw adjusting the same on said head, movement of said head upon said handle in one direction disengaging said adjusting means from said second jaw.
2. In a wrench, a handle member, a head member movable thereon and carrving a fixed jaw, an adjustable jaw on said head, means carried by said handle member for adjusting said second jaw, movement of said head upon said handle in one direction disengaging said adjusting means from said second jaw, and resilient means on said head opposing opening movement of said second jaw.
3. In a wrench, a handle member, a head member movable thereon and carrying a fixed jaw, an adjustable jaw on said head, means carried by and movable with respect to said handle member for'adjusting said second jaw, movement of said head upon said handle in one direction disengaging said adjusting means from said second jaw, and means for locking said head in fixed position upon said handle member with said adjusting means in engagement with said second aw.
4:- In a Wrench, a handle member, a head member movable thereon and carrying a fixed j a w, an adjustable jaw on said head, rotatable means carried by said handle memher for adjusting said second jaw, movement of said head upon said handle in one direction disengaging said adjusting means from said second jaw, and a-member on which said adjusting means rotate pivoted to said handle member.
5. In a wrench, a handle member, a head member pivoted thereon and carrying a fixed jaw, a second jaw'adjustable on said head member, a rack on said second jaw, a rotatable member carried by said handle member meshing with said rack for adjusting said second jaw, movement of said head member upon said handlemember in one direction disengaging said rotatable member from said second jaw.
6. In a wrench, a handle member, a head member pivoted thereon and carrying a fixed jaw, a second jaw adjustable on said head member, a rack on said second jaw, a rotatable member carried by said handle member meshing with said rack for adjusting said second jaw, movement of said head member upon said handle member in one direction disengaging said rotatable member from said second jaw and in opposite direction reengaging said second jaw and locking the same against movement away from said fixed jaw.
7. In a wrench, a handle member, a head 7 member pivoted thereon and carrying a fixed jaw, a second jaw adjustable on said head member, a rack on said second jaw, a rotatable member carried by said handle member meshing with said rack for adjusting said second jaw, movement of said head member upon said handle member in one direction disengaging said rotatable member from said second jaw, and a member on which said rotatable member is supported pivoted to said handle member.
8.
