To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, JOHN W. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon- Burners, of which the following is a speclfication.
The invention relates to burners, and more particularly to the class "of hydrocarbon burners for use in cooking or heating stoves, or other like appliances. v The primary object of the invention is the provision of a burner of. this character wherein the burnertip is located within an air conduit, and its flame serves to heat a,
' retort coil so that the liquid fuel will be transformed into a gas so as to assure the perfect combustion thereof with resultant maximum heat and minimum use of fuel.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a burner of this character wherein the air is admitted concentrically about the burner tip in a novel manner for producing oxygen to assure theuniform and even burning of the fuel.
A further object'of the invention is the.
provision of a burner of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form so as to render it'compact and in a single unit, the fuelibeing heated fromthe burner tip prior to consumption, and thereby transforming the said fuel into a gaseous fuel. a
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a burner of this character wherein it can be readily cleaned, and by reason of the requisite supply of oxygen will obviate the formationof soot or crust, and to assure perfect combustion of the fuel admitted thereto, and at the same time increasing the heating quality thereof. a
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a burnerv of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, readily and easily applied for use in a furnace, cooking stove, heating stove, orthe like, and also one which is inexpensive in manufacture.
' With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in .the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the burner comprises .a substantially elbowshaped pipe-like body 10, preferably cast,
and formed on one branch thereofwith a flared air inlet mouth 11, while the other elbow thereof is formed concentrically there of with a heating coil or annular tube 12 provided at one point without the pipe. 10 with a nipple 13 into which is tapped a liquid fuel supply pipe 14 leading from any suitable point of supply, while at a point diametrically opposite the nipple 13 and leading from the coil or annular tube 12 are the horizontal and vertical portions 15 and 16, respectively, of a delivery tube which exfitends centrally within the pipe 10 and is integral with a burner tip supporting .tube a 17 1n the upstanding portion 18, which is located centrally within the vertical branch of the elbow pipe 10, and in this tube 17 is fitted a burner tip 19, which in this instance is screwed therein, although :it may be detachably fastened thereto in any suitable manner and constitutes the burner proper.

The burner supporting tube 17 is held centrally within the body 10 through the medium of an integral web 23 which is also integral with the said body. It will be apparent that the body 10 and tubes both without and within the said body are integrally formed with each other to form a unitary structure, the same being preferably made by casting from metal.
Provided in the delivery tube and burner tip supporting tube 17 are suitable cleaning ports which have secured therein removable plugs 2 l so that access may be had thereto for the cleaning of the same when the plugs are detached, and thus in this manner the possibility of the choking of the burner is entirely eliminated. Resting upon the annular tube or coil 12 is a spider-like flame spreader 25 which serves to spread the flame from the burner tip 19 for the preheating of the oil within the coil or tube 12 and without the vertical branch of the body 10 of the burner.
In Fig. 4: there is shown a slight modification of the invention wherein the preheating annular coil or tube 26 on the vertical branch of the body 27 is formed within the same in contradistinction to the coil or tube 12 located without the vertical branch of the body hereinbefore set forth.
In Figs. 5 and 6 there is shown a still further modification of the invention wherein the burner comprises a circular pan-like body 28 having secured thereto a top or lid 29 from which rises a plurality of cylindrical columns 30, each being formed at its free end without the same with a preheating coil or annular tube 31 from one point of which leads the horizontal and vertical portions 32 and 33 of a delivery tube, the
vertical portion 33 being extended centrally within the body 28 and is integral with a burner tip supporting tube 34- carrying the burner tip 35 which is located centrally within the column 30, and this construction of delivery tube and burner tip is identical to the construction hereinbefore set forth with respect to Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive. Integral with the top or lid 29 is a cross connecting tube 36 which has its upstanding terminals 37 integral and communicating with a pair of the coils or annular preheating tubes 37, while the remaining coil or annular tube of the series is formed with a depending nipple 88 integral therewith and also with the top or lid 29, and tapped into this cross connecting tube 36 and the nipple 38 are the respective oil supply pipes 39 and .410 which lead from any suitable source of supply ardare provided therein with cut-0E valves 4C1 which control the feed of oilto the burner. The pan-like body 28 in its bottom forms an oil pan for initially lighting each burner tip 35, and at one point in the pe riphery of the said body is provided a funnel-shaped or flared air inlet mouth 42 for supplying air to theburner.
In Fig. 7 there is shown a further modilied form of burner wherein the body 4-3 is of cylindrical contour and is formed at one end with a flared air inlet mouth 44, while at the opposite end and without the same is formed a preheating coil or annular tube 15 which has tapped therein at one point the oil supply pipe 46, while diametrically opposite this point is formed thedelivery tube 47 which is integral with a burner tip supporting tube 48 located centrally within the body 41-3 and extends longitudinally thereof. This tube 48 carries at its free end a burner tip 49 which delivers the flame horizontally from th body 48, whereas the burnertips hereinbefore set forth deliver the flame vertically from the body of the burner. The combination with an oil burner proper, of a heating'coil concentrically disposed about the path of the flame from the burner and having communication with the latter, means for supplying liquid fuel to he coil, means for housing the burner and forming an air conduit thereto, anoil pan formed in the bottom of the housing, means for permitting the cleaning of the coil and the connection between the same and the burner, and means for controlling the air supply to the burner through the conduit.
2. A hydrocarbon burner comprising a body forming anair conduit having an air inlet at one point thereof, a shutter mounted to regulate the intake of air through the inlet, a preheating coillo cated without the air conduit, a burner proper arran ed interiorly of the air conduit and having connection with the preheating coil and also having its tip arranged close to and centrally with respect to the preheating coil whereby the heat from the flame when issuing from the tip will be distributed throughout the coil, and means for supplying liquid fuel to the coil.
