Be it known that I, BENJAMIN GETTY- I CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States,
residing at Oakland, in the county of Ala media and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating and Controlling Means for Valves,
of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in operating means for valves, and
more particularly to a structure designed to be employed in connection with flushing valves, whereby a measured quantity of water is supplied on each operation of the valve.
The invention has for its principal obj ects to provide a structure which is capable" of operation without great efiort; is provided with means whereby the valve after being opened is retained in an open position for a predetermined period; and one provided with a fluid controlled timing apparatus which will operate at a determinable period to release the means for. retaining the valve in open position, thereby permitting the same to close. With the above mentioned and other objects'in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being under- I stood that various changes in the form, proportion,*size and minor detailsof construction'within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of advantagesof the inventlon. reference should be had to the accompany ing sheet of drawing disclosing the preferred 2 form, and in which- Figure 1 is a view part in elevation and part in section with my invention attached to a suitable flushing valve, disclosing the toggle frame, the connection therebetween and the handle, the catch, and the pivotally mounted fluid containing receptacle; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, disclosing more fully the supporting standard, and the pivotal points for certain of the members extended therefrom. l

Extending upwardly from one side of the r upper surface of the casing 1 is a'supporting arm or standard 8,:carrying at its'upper end a horizontally disposed shaft 9",' to which are pivotally mounted the ends of arms 10 and 11, which are pivotally connected at their lower ends, as at 1'2 and 13, to the upper ends of arms 1i and 15, whichare in turn pivotally connected at their lower ends to' the upstanding rib 7 the structure forming a substantially diamondshaped toggle jointed frame; I
Pi'votally connected to the pivot points and 13are the ends of the respective arms 16 and 17 which are pivotallyconnected at their opposite ends to the respective arms 18 and '12 projecting in diametrically opposite dlrections from the handle head portion 20 from'which projects the operating handle or lever 21', the head portion being pivotally mounted on a shaft 22 extending outwardl from the support 8 directly below the shaft 9; .It".wi1l be apparent from the-above description that on the downward movement" of the operating handle the pivot points 12 and '13 will be drawn inwardly toward each other, forcing the :lower ends ofthe arms 1& and 15 downwardly, which in turn force the valve stem 5 downwardly to open the valve 4 against the tension of' the spring 7,
and on the upward movement of the lever 21 by the spring, the respective parts will assume the positions as shown in the drawings;
Pivotally mounted on a stu'd 23' projecting outwardly from the support 8 below theshaft 22, is the lower end'of a substantially T-shaped trip lever 2t, provided with a catch 25, adapted when'theo-perating handle or lever 21 is in its downward positionto engage a shoulder 26 formed on a boss 27 adapted to pivot about the shaft 22, and
which is secured in any suitable manner, as
bythe screw 28, to the head 20. The upper end of the trip lever 24 is formed with,

alined oppositely extending arms 29 and 30, the arm 29 carrying an adjustable weight 31 which causes the trip lever to normally maintain the catch 25 in contact with the surface of the boss 27 and in a position to engage the shoulder 26, and the arm 30 carries at its end a roller 32, with which is adapted to contact a releasing device hereinafter described.
.Pivotally mounted as at 33, on the shaft 9, slightly to-one side of its longitudinal center, is a receptacle 34 formed at its opposite ends with the respective compartments 35 and 36 connected by a contracted channel 37 controlled by a valve 38. The chambers are adapted to contain a suitable fluid of heavy specific gravity, preferably mercury, which is admitted thereto through the filling opening 39 and the fluid passing from one compartment to the other through the channel 37 will retain the receptacle'in an inclined position'in either direction.
Extending upwardly from the handle or lever 21 is an arm 40, provided adjacent its upper end with spaced horizontally disposed fingers 41 and 42 which when the handle is operated alternately engage a lug 43, projecting from the end of the receptacle The parts being assembled and in the position as disclosed in the drawings, the device operates in the followin manner:On pushing the handle or lever 21 downwardly,
the arms 18 and 19 through their connections will draw the pivot points 12 and 13 together, forcing the plate 6 downwardly, compressing the spring 7 and unseating the Valve 4. Simultaneously with this operation the catch 25, owing to the rotation of the boss 27, will engage the seat 26 and-retain the lever or handle 21 in its depressed position, and the valve 4 open. The finger 41 on the downward movement of the handle will engage the lug 43, and move the receptacles 35 and 36 to a slightly inclined position in an op osite direction to that shown in the drawings, which will permit the mercury to pass from compartment 35 through the bore 37 to the compartment 36; the weight of the mercury collecting in compartment 36 will cause the same to tilt downwardly and contact with the roller 32; the weight of the mercury being greater than the weight 31, the same will be lifted and the catch 25 will be withdrawn. from the shoulder 26 which will permit the spring 7' to close the valve 4, and through the various links and arms raise the lever or handle On the upward movement of the handle the finger 42 will contact with the underside of the lug 43 and raise the receptacle 34 to a horizontal position, which will permit the mercury to fiow from the compartment 36 to compartment 35, and the receptacle being pivoted to one side of its-lon itudinal cente'r. as in the drawings. will tilt toward the compartment 35, on the mercury in both compartments becoming level, and will assume the position as in Fig. 1, when the ap paratus will be in a position to operate as before described.
It will be apparent from the above description that I have provided an eiiicient valve timing mechanism which is capable of being attached to any valve, one which is simple in its operation and may be con structed at little cost.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is z 1. In a valve controlling and operating means and in combination with a valve, means cooperating with said valve for operating the same to open, pivotally mounted means for locking the valve in its open position, tiltingly mounted means containing a movable weight coiiperating with said locking means for releasing the same at a predetermined time to permit said valve to close, and means for operating said valve to close on the release of said valve locking means.
2. In a valve controlling and operating means and in combination with a valve, a supporting standard, a toggle frame secured at one end to said standard and cooperating with the stem of said valve, means forv operating said toggle frame to actuate said valve stem to operate said valve, pivotally mounted means for locking the valve in its open position, pivotally mounted fluid controlled means for coacting with said locking means and for releasing the same at a predetermined time to permit said valve to close, and means for closing said valve.
3. In a valve controlling and operating means and in combination with a valve, a supporting standard, manually operated means connected to said standard and cooperating with said valve for operating said valve to open, pivotally operated means for locking said valve operating means when said valve is in its open position, tiltingly mounted means containing a liquid weight and adapted for coacting with said locking means at a predetermined time to permit said valve to close, and means for operating said valve to close on the release of said locking means.
4. In a valve controlling and operating means and in combination with a valve, a supporting standard, a toggle connection between said standard and said valve, a manually operated lever pivoted at one end to said standard and connected through links to said toggle connection for operating the same to operate said valve to open, pivotally mounted means for locking said valve in its open position, a pivotally mounted fluid actuated means associated with said locking means for contactlng With the same to re lease said locking means at a predetermined period to permit said valve to close, and means for operating said valve to close on the release of said locking means and for restoring said fluid actuating means to normal position.

In a valve controlling and operating means and in combination with a valve, a supporting standard, an operating lever connected at one end to said standard and cooperating with said valve to open the same, pivotally mounted means cooperating With said lever for locking said valve in'its open position, a tiltingly operated fluid actuated means for contacting with said looking means for releasing the same at a predetermined period to permit said valve to close, means for operating said valve to close on the release of said locking means and for restoring said fluid actuating means to normal position, and means for restoring said pivotally mounted locking means to normal position on the restoring to normal position of said fluid actuating means.
6. In a valve controlling and operating means and in combination with a valve, a supporting standard, a manually operated means connected to said supporting standard and said valve stem for operating said valve stem to open said valve, pivotally mounted means for locking said valve in its,
open position, a pivotally mounted fluid actuated means associated with said locking means for actuating the sameto release at a predetermined period to permit said valve to close, means actuated on the operation of said valve to open for moving said fluid actuated means to a position to actuate said locking means, means for operating said valve to close on the release of said locking means, and means actuated on the operation of saidvalve to close for moving said fluid actuated means to assume a normal position.
7. In a valve controlling and operating said valve to close, means actuated on the operation of said valve to. open for movmg said fluid-actuated means to a position to actuate said locking means, means for operatlng said valve to close on the release of said locking means, and means actuated on the operation of said valve to close for moving said fluid actuated means to assume a normal position.
8. In a valve controlling and operating .means and in combination with a valve,
means cooperating with said valve for operating the same to open, pivotally mounted means for locking the valve in its open position, a tilting means comprising chambers containing a liquid weight and connected by avalve controlled passage, said tilting means adapted for cooperating with said locking means for releasing the same to permit said valve to close, and means for operating said valve to close on the release of said pivotally mounted valve locking means.

In a valve controlling and operating means and in combination with a valve, means cooperating with said valve for operating the same to open, pivotally mounted means for locking the valve in its open position, tiltingly mounted fluid controlled means cooperating with said locking means, for releasing sald valv'eito close, and meansfor operating said valve to close and for re storing said fluid actuating means to normal position.
10. Ina valve controlling and operating means and 'in combination with a valve, means associated therewith for. operating the same to open, pivotally mounted means fol locking said valve in its open position, a fluid actuated tilting means associated with said locking means for actuating the same to release at a predetermined period to permit said valve to close, means actuated on the operation of said valve to open for moving said tilting means to a position to actuate said locking means, means for operating said valve to close on the" release of said locking means, and'means actuated on the operation of said valve to close for moving said fluid actuated means to assume normal position.
