Specification of Letters ]Pa1;ent.
.- Patented Nov. 2,1915
' Application m July 17, 1914. Serial No. 851,589. 1
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, J AMES M. THOMPSON,
a citizen of the United'States, residing at Monessen, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have lnvented new and useful Improvements in Lock-Nuts,
of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in means for effectively locking a nut upon a bolt to prevent the accidental dis association of the said nut and bolt.
'In carrying out my invention I propose to provide a lock of this character which shall be of simple construction, cheap to manufacture, easily and quickly applied and which shall be thoroughly efficient.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of theappended claims.
The drawings illustrate a simple and satisof the same, and Fig. 6 is an elevation looking toward the rear face of the nut.
While I have illustrated mv improvement in connection with a rail joint, it is to be understood that the same is not to be thus limited in itsuseful application, as the improvement may be applied with equal ciliciency upon all structures wherein it is desirable or essential that the connecting nut and bolt be retained locked against accidental separation fromvibration or from any other cause. 7
Referring now to the'drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates a rail of the ordinary construction, 22 the fish plates which engage with the opposite sides of the rail, 3 the bolt which passes through suitable openings in the fish plates and in the web of the rail, and 4 the nut for the bolt. In
the present instance the fish plates 2 are channeled upon both their inner and outer 1 faces, and the head of the bolt 3 is of a width to engage with the beads formed by the channel upon the outer face of one of the fish plates 2. v
- The numeral 5 designates a substantially rectangular plate which is constructed of some-spring material and which has its edges, upon its inner face, beveled or inclined, as indicated by the numeral 6, the said .beveled edges contacting with the angularopposite faces of the beads formed upon the outer face of the second fish plate.
{The plate 5 has its inner face-dished or de-, 'pressed,,as indicated by the numeral 7, and
if desired, and as illustrated in the draw ing, the angular or beveled portion 6 may beprovided upon'only two of the opposite ed es ofthe plate.- 'lheplate is provided with -a bolt opening 8 through which the shank of the bolt 3 -passes,and'the outer face of the plate is formed with depressions orpockets 9, preferablytwo [1n 'numberarranged diametrically opposite each other. By dishing or depressing the inner'face of the plate 5, the central portion thereof is rendered yieldable for a reason which will presently be described.
The numerallO designates a spring ring or washer member, the same having its inner face formed withlugs 11 which are adapted to be received within the pockets 9, and the outer face of the said member 10 is formed with teeth 12 which radiate from the center of the, said member.
The nut 4 of any ordinaryv construction, but has lts inner face provided with teeth 14 which radiate from the center thereof,
and which are preferably arranged concentrio of the bore of the said nut. When the nut 4: is screwed upon the threaded shank of the bolt 3, after the members 5 and 10 have been assoclated, as above described, the
teeth:12 of the spring member 10. The angular or beveled ends or edges 6 of the plate v5 will be forced tightly against the opposite angular walls provided by the beads-of the fish plate 2, causing the central portion of the plate to bulge outwardly,
which movement forces the spring member or washer 10 toward the nut eftecting a bind- 'teeth 14 of the nut 13 will ratchet over the ing action between theteeth'of the member 10 and the teeth of the nut.
Vhat is claimed is:
1. The combinationwith a spring plate having opposite angular edges and its inner face depressed between the said'angular edges, a bolt passing through an openlng in the plate, the outer face of the plate being formed with depressions, a spring member having a bolt opening and one of itsfaces provided with lugs which engage in the ole pressions of the plate, the outer face of the said spring member having teeth which radi- 7 ate from its center, a nut for the bolt, and said nut having its inner face formed with teeth which engage with the teeth of the '1 spring member when the nut is screwed home upon the bolt.
2. The combination with rails, of a fish platefor the rails, said fish plate having its outer face depressed to provide heads, the s t ide f Wh ar lin d, and. a
,bolt passing through openings in the rails and fish plate, of a spring plate having opposite angular edges which contact with the angular faces of the beads of the fish plate,
' the said spring plate havinga bolt opening to receive the bolt and its inner face channeled between its angular edges, the outer face of the said spring plate being formed with depressions, a spring member having a l sp ing a d ts nn ace Pr v ed with lugs which are received within the depressions of the plate, the outer face of the id sp ng me be h ng t et a u r the bolt, and said nut having its inner face provided with teeth which ratchet over the which reeeived within the depressions of t e ell-r g Plat and t ut r face P vided with teeth which radiate from the center of saidv ring, and a nut engaging the bolt and having its inner face provided with radially disposed teeth which co-act with the teeth of said ring member,
