Description
rra rf-TATES NINIAN STEWART, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRuNKs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,905, dated J une 13, 1871; antedated June 2, 1871.
To whom it may conce-rn:
Beit known that I, NINIAN STEWART, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of- Michigan, have invented a neu7 and useful Improvem ent in a Writing-Desk and Toilet-Table Attachment for Trunks 5 and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this speciication, in which- Figure l is a perspective of my attachment as a toilet-table secured to a trunk. Fig. 2 is a similar view as a writing-desk.
Likeletters indicate like parts in each gure.
The nature of this invention relates to the attachment of certain devices Within a trunk of any size, and folding, when not in use, in-
to the top thereof, so arranged that at will a.
dressing-table with a flat top, and a toiletglass, or a Writing-desk with a sloping or inclined top, and'a stand upon which to place an inkst-and, may be had Whenever desired. The invention consists in the arrangement of the various parts to form a complete whole for the purposes above mentioned, in con1bination with an ordinary packing or traveling trunk, as more fully1 hereinafter set forth and described. Y
In the accompanying drawing,A representsA the bottom, andB the top of an ordinary trunk,
hinged together in the usual manner. The top and bottom of the trunk :may be divided into compartments of any. size and form, ex-
cept that a small space must be left in the bottom part of the top, Within which to fold up the attachment, hereinafter described, when not required for use, in such a manner as not to interfere with the closing and locking ofthe trunk. U are slides, one end of which is pivoted to the ends of the trunk top near the rear wall of the same. The length of these slides should conform to the Width of the interior of the said top. A rectangular frame, J, conforming in `Width to said Width of the trunk top, has its ends so arranged as to have a reciprocating movement in the slides O. To the top'of this frame is hinged the table top D,
v which has a small mirror, E, secured to it in such a manner that, when not required, said mirror will fold into a corresponding opening,
F, in the table top D. G and G are braces hinged together at a, the lower ends of which rest upon and are secured to the front edge of the bottom part of the trunk in such a manner as to be readily detached when required. The upper ends of these braces Gengage with and are secured to the under side of and near the front edge of the table top. The other braces G', at their upper ends, engage with and are secured to the slides G by suitable pins or otherwise, as may be most convenient and desirable.
` To change the table top from the dat position shown in Fig. l the pins which secure the braces G to the slides C, and which pass through said braces and slides into suitable holes in the end of the rectangular frame, are removed; the frame isl drawn upward in the -slides until the desired inclination of the top is had. The pins are then reinserted through the ends of the braces, slides, and into other holes in the ends of' the rectangular frame, a series of these holes being provided for the purpose. The mirror is then folded down, when its back offers a small platform, H, upon which to place an inkstand.
To prevent the back of the mirror from presenting the same inclination as the table top tivo small wedges or dogs, I, pivoted into the sides of the opening in the top to receive the mirror when closed, which dogs, being raised, allow the mirror to rest upon them, and keep it in such a position that the inkstand will not slide off.
To close the trunk, remove the braces G G',
fold the table top down between the slides in- Y to the top of the trunk, and secure the braces by suitable straps on the bottom of the table top, so that, when the latter is folded down, the braces will rest Within the rectangular frame. v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The trunk A, provided with the slides C, tabletop D, mirror E, and bracesG G', all the parts being constructed and arranged sub stantially as described and shown, for the pura Witnesses:
Tiros. S. Seamen,
M. STEWART.
