JAMES B. JOHNSON, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO4 SPRINGFIELD METAL EURRING- COMPANY, 0F SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION.
METALLIC BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed February 1, 1915. Serial No. 5,489.
To all whom t may concern.' A
Be it known that I, JAMES B. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United, States, residing at Springfield, Massachusetts, have invented certain new and 4useful Improvements in Metallic Building Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in metallic building construction and is applicable in connection with constructions, such as shown in Letters Patent of the United States granted to me on the 20th day of August, 1912, #1,036,522 andJanuary 13, 1914, No. 1,084,580.
The invention has among others for its objects to provide a simple and economical wall construction in which the parts may be readily assembled and firmly and durably held together.
The invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of part-s hereinafter described and particularly defined by the appended claims.
In order that my improved construction may be clearly understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of such a wall construction. Figs. 2 and 3 are sections taken respectively on lines 2-2 and 3 3 of Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are view s similar to Fig. 1 showing the construction as it would appear inv an outside wall. Fig. 6 is a detail view of a further modification.
In this drawing, the letter A designates a vertical stud or I-beam designedto. support at its edges furring strips B, and connected at its ends to the main supporting or I-beams C.
I prefer to construct the stud A of two channel members secured together by means such as bolts or rivets and having flanges first turned outwardly away from each other as indicated at a, a and then doubled back as indicated ata, a forming grooves or channels a2, a2 to receive the opposite edges b, b of the furring strips B.
In order to connect the stud A to the beam C I provide a substantially U-shaped orchannel member D having laterally extending fianges (Z which are embraced by the channeled edges e of a two-part clamping member E, the parts of which are held together in clamping position by extending Specification of Letters Patent.
' height than the Patented Nov. 2, i915.
between the walls of the stud A and being engaged by the bolts or rivets a3.
Wlthm the channel member D is placed av furrmg strip B of channel form which is held therein by having its edges engaged by the-turned over edges Z of the strip or bar D. The channel of the member D is of greater height than the furring strip so as to have a space d and a portion of the crown or top of the strip D is out away as indicated at d2, to all'ow one wall or flange of the main beam C to rest directly against the top or crown of the furring strip. .The parts are locked in this position by wedges F which are driven into the spaces ai in the ends of the member D, the ends of these wedges overlapping the flanges c of the beam C.
The Wedges may be locked in position by means of lugs or tongues b which may be formed by slitting portions of' the furring strip to provide tongues which may be bent up after the wedges are driven into place.
It will be understood that as embodied in an outside wall the flanged beam Cv would be held by a singlewedge as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the o posite'iange being held by the overturne clip or portion 52. In such outside construction the portion D may be made to overhang the flange as indicated at D in Fig. 6 and a metal wedge or key F used, these parts D and F being of less parts D. and F of Figs. 4L and 5.
`I claim:
1. In alwall construction, a stud, a channel member extending across one edge thereof andhaving a cut away portion, means lfor connecting the said channel member to member and a wedge. inserted in the space y between said channel member and furring strip and overlapping a flange of said beam, substantially as described.
2; In a wall construction a stud, a channel member extending across one edge thereof, means for connectingsaid channel member to said stud, a channel-shaped furring strip Within said channel member and of less depth than said channel member, said channel member having a cut-away portion, a
anged bea-n1 seated in said cut away portion, a wedge in the space between said channel member and furring strip and overlapping a flange of said flanged beam, and means for locking said wedge in position.
3.- In a wall construction a stud, a holding clip carried at the end thereof having .opposing channels, a channel member having oppositelyextended ianges seated in said channels, said flanges having internal grooves, a channel-shaped furring strip within said channel member and having lateral flanges seated in said grooves, said fur.
ring strip being of less depth than said channel member and said channel`member having a portion of its crown cut away, a
flanged beam seated in said cutaway portion, and a wedge inserted in said channel opposing channels, a channel member hav- 1n saigd. channels, said flanges having internal grooves, a channel-shaped furring strip within said channel member and having lateral flangesv seated in said grooves, said furring strip being of less depth than said channel member and said channel member hav ing a portion of its crown cut away, a flanged beam seated in said cutaway portion, and a wedge inserted in said channel member and overlapping a 'flange f said last named beam, and an integral bendable lug on said furring strip for holding said wedge in place.
In testimony whereof, I-,afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
