Description

GERSH'OM MOTT.
Improvement in Gates.
Patented June 13, m1,
AffbWI Ifj Ilfisllllllll M WW fysss,
UNITE ra'rss EMPROJEMENT IN GATES Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,883, dated June 13, 1871 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnesnon Morr, of Big Run, in the county of Athens and in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improve ment, by which my invention may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
My invention relates to that class of gates in which elongated staples and an adjustable loop are employed for opening or closing the same, so as to suit the irregularity or hilly nature of the ground, and also to allow of its being vertically adjusted to avoid coming in contact with snow or other obstruction in its operation. a
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention and forms a part of the specification thereof, in which corresponding parts are represented by similar letters, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the gate when closed; and Fig. 2, a perspective view of the same when open, exhibiting its inner or rear side and the component parts of the hinges.
The construction and operation of my invention are as follows, to wit: The gateA is constructed of the horizontal slats or bars a, connected together by the vertical braces a a and weighted piece or balance a which is secured to that end of the gate extending beyond the hinge-post b, and a little one side of the fence-post b, for the purpose of retaining the gate in a horizontal plane, so as to equalize the weight of the same upon its hinges and facilitate the opening and shutting thereof.
The upper hinge B of the gate consists of the elongated staples c c, and are linked together, as seen in Fig. 2, the staple c, which is secured to the gate, being allowed to slide vertically and laterally in the staple 0 secured to the hingepost I), for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
The lower hinge G is composed of the elongated staple 0 which is driven into the post b and loop 0 passing through a rectangular openin g or aperture cut in the lower rail of the gate, into which it is held and fastened by the pin 0 when it is desired to elevate the gate above the snow or other obstruction that may be in its way, it being susceptible of vertical adj ustment, as already stated, while being opened or closed; but when it is desired to open it, when located upon hilly ground, the said pin a is withdrawn, the gate thrown up at an angle to suit the inclination of the ground and swung open, the upper part thereof assuming the same plane as its lower portion through the lateral movement of its upper hinge, as above set forth. at is a shoulder or projection formed on the inner side of the staple a of the lower hinge, for the purpose of holding the gate in position when elevated, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, I will indicate what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the following clause:
The arrangement of the elongated staples c, 0 and 0, adjustable loop 0', and pin a, when constructed and operating together, as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of February, 1870.
