COMBINED CARPENTERSS SQUARE AND MITER-GAG'E.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1915.
, Application filed December 12, 1914. Serial No. 876,867.
To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, CLARENCE F. BENJA- MIN, a citizen of the Jnited States, residing at the'town of Milford, county ofNew Haven, and State of Connecticut, have in vented certam new and useful Improvements in Combined Carpenters Squares and Miter-Gages; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame. a
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rules, and pertains more particularly to pivoted rules of the folding or pocket type.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a rule which has novel and improved means incorporated therein for holding the two pivoted sections of the rule locked in any desiredangular relation, so as to permit the rule to be used in cutting miters, beveling, and in other instances where an angle is to be marked or formed.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the two pivoted sections of the rule may be given micrometric adjustments after initial locking in their desired angular relationship.
Further and other objects will later appear and be set forth.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the pivoted rule members locked at right angles; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Specifically the invention involves two members 1 and 2 of a conventional type of rule, the member 1 being provided with a circular head 3 which has a central opening 4, and a plurality of notches 5 on its periphery.
The member 2 has secured on opposite sides thereof spaced plates 6 each of which is provided with an opening 7. The plates 6 embrace the circular head 3, and their openings 7 register with the opening 4 in the head 3, a pin 8 being passed through the openings 1 and 7 to pivotally connect the two members 1 and 2.
Themember 2 is recessed as shown at 10 and slidably receives a block 11 in the recess, the side edges 12 of the block projecting into slots 12 in the plates 6. The block 11 is provided with a pair of screw-threaded apertures 13 for the reception of screws 14, which latter secure a detent 15 to the block 11. The screws 14: pass through slots '16 in the detent 15, the slots being of greater width than the diameters of the screws. i t
The detent 15 is ieceivable in the space between the plates 6.,land by being secured to the block prevents'displacement of the latter from the recess 10, as is apparent from Fig. 3 of the drawings. i a
The inner or bottom edge of the detent 15 is curved at the ends thereof at 20, and its forward end is provided with a nose 21 which is adapted to fit into a selected one of the notches 5 in the circular member By virtue of the curved ends of the detent 15 contacting with the adjacent straight face of the block 11, it will be seen that the detent 15 is capable of a rocking movement with respect thereto for a purpose now to be described.
When it is desired to set the two members 1 and 2 at an angle to each other, the same are turned about their pivotal connection 8 until the nose 21 of theblock 15 is opposite the desired notch 5 in the member 3. The blocks are then moved forwardly until the nose 21 is engaged in the notch 5 thus preventing relative pivotal movement of the members 1 and 2.
To provide for a more accurate adjustment of the members 1 and 2, one of the screws 14 is turned outwardly and the other inwardly, which effects a rocking movement of the detent 15 with respect to the block 11 thus giving the necessary movement to the members 1 and 2 to obtain an accurate or micrometric adjustment. When this adjustment has been made the screws 14- are tightened and the members 1 and 2 are thus held rigidly in their adjusted position. The lastnamed adjustment enables the members 1 and 2 to contract or spread apart as de sired, according to whether the members are to be contracted or spread apart, after the sliding lock is moved into one of the notches 5.
What is claimed is:
1. In a rule, a pair of pivoted members, a notched circular head carried by one of the members, a device carried by and slidable and tiltable with reference to the other memberfor engagement with the notches of the circular member, and means for tilting said device after such engagement for correctmg angular varlatlons of sald members.
