' To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN SPALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toilet-Paper Holders, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention more particularly is to provide means tending to deter the inconsiderate and wasteful use or unlawful conversion of toilet paper, and the invention consists generally in an improved mechanism which compels the setting of an autc' matic latching mechanism which permits after such setting and before a resetting of the mechanism of the removal of a limited portion only of the paper.

In the accompanying drawing illustrating an embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a View in front elevation showing a toilet paper holder according to my invention.

Fig. 2 is a view of the left hand end as shown in Fig. 1 with the cover for that end removed. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of themechanism case with parts in section. Fig. 4c is a detail on the line mm Fig. 3 looking toward the front of the device.

In the views 5 designates a hood or case provided withflanges 5" having screw holes for fastening-the same to a wall. The case isdivided by a wall 16 into two compart ments 6 and 7 the former to receive a roll 8 of toilet paper and the latter to receive the mechanism. Each of these compartments has a removable cover for its outer end, each i of said covers being adapted tobe secured with a padlock or by any other suitable means. The compartment. 6 is provided with a slot 6 through which the paper is drawn to remove it from the roll.

Rotarily mounted in the case is a hollow shaft or spindle 10. The rollof toilet paper 8 is-secured to the hollow spindle 10 in the compartment 6 or at the right hand end of the spindle by means of a pair of elastic pronged fingers 11, 11 extending from a perforated thimble 12, said fingers being connected'by a bridging member 13. Connected with said'bridgin g member 13 is a threaded stem-14 provided with a thumb nut 15 abutting against the end of the thimble 12 so that by turning the nut in the proper direction the pronged fingers can be withdrawn from or permitted to engage the nnercore of the paper roll through appropriate open- Specification of Letters Patent.

ings in the hollow spindle. But any approved means can be employed to lock the roll to the spindle to cause the unwinding of the paper to impart rotary motion tothe spindle. The cover for the right hand end of the case can have a supplemental portion 30 attached with it to inclose the end of the spindle and the nut 15 to prevent unauthorized manipulation thereof.

Secured to the left hand end of the hollow spindle within the compartment 7 is an annular ring or projection 17 having a tooth or shoulder 18 in its periphery and a lug or stop on its side, said shoulder 18 and lug 19 being at nearly opposite points. The spindle 10 is also provided with a radially extending finger 20. Pivoted on the wall 16 is a gravity pawl 21, the free end of which normally rests in the path of rotation of the tooth or shoulder 18, so as to prevent the turning of the spindle in a direction to permit the withdrawal of'the free end of the paper roll. Slidingly mounted in the case and in a projecting plate 16 above the pawl 21 is a key rod 22 to which rod the pawl is connected by a flexible member 23 passing over a small pulley 24. The key rod 22 is made with a notch 22 and mounted on a projection in the compartment 6 is a latch lever 27 provided with a spring 28 tending to press the latch lever toward the key rod so that when thekey rod is pressed inward the latch lever shall automatically'slip into said notch and lock the same from movement. The lower arm 27 of the latch lever 27 is bent to lie in the path of the radially extending finger 20.

The operation is briefly this: When it 1s desired to remove a portion of the paper from the roll the key rod 22 is pushed in until caught by the latch lever 27. T1115 operation lifts the gravity pawl 21 from in front of the tooth 18 so that the-paper roll spindle 10 can be turned by drawing out the free end of the paper strip .but only a single rotation can be made after a single operation of the key rod because when the spindle 10 is partly turned the radial finger 20 actuates the latch lever 27 to release the key rod 22 which is then restored to normal position by the coil sprin' 26. of the rotation 0 the spindle and paper roll the gravity pawl 21 falls in front of the tooth 18. The pressing in of the key rod 22 also presses rearward the upper arm of the lever 25 and projects the toe of the lower end of that lever into the path of the lug 19 but because in proper operation the push key 22 is automatica'll released by the op eration of the radial ger 20' on the latch lever 27, the said toe of the lever 25 is then retracted and does not operate to prevent the rotation of the paper. If, however, it be attempted by the user to withdraw from the roll more than one layer of paper by holding in the push key 22 the attempt willbe frustrated by the abutment of the lug 19 against the said toe of the lever 25 thereby preventing the rotation of the paper roll spindle. Of course, several pieces or one strip made up of several pullings can be taken from the roll but this involves several operations of the push key 22 which operations are accompanied by more or less noise and indeed can operate a specially provided signal if Upon the completion desired, and as will readily occur to those skilled in mechanics.

The form of the parts can be varied without departing from'the gist of the invention as claimed.

What I claim is:

1. A toilet paper holder comprising, in combination, a case, a paper roll spindle, means for securing a paper roll thereto to rotate therewith, means for latching the spindle from rotation, a key for releasing the said latching means, means for latching said key when the same has been actuated, and means carried by the paper roll spindle for automatically releasing the key when the paper roll spindle is turned.

2. A toilet paper holder comprising, in combination, a case, a paper roll spindle, means for securing a paper roll thereto to rotate therewith, means for latching the spindle from rotation, a key for releasing the said latching means, means for latching said key when the same has been actuated,

means carried by the paper roll spindle for automatically releasing the key when the paper roll spindle is turned, and means for preventing the complete rotation of the paper roll spindle until after the key is released.
