Specification of Letters Patent.
Y., assreivort To. nnnonnrna ooiaroiaa-` Patented Nov, 2, 11915.@
Original application led February 24, 1908, Serial No. 417,352. Divided and this-application led November 27,1914. serial No. 874.109. .f
` a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of New7 York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve-` ments in Roll-Holders'for Calculators, of which the following is a specification.
This application is divided out of an application filed by me February 24, 1908 Serial N o. 417,352.
The object of the present invention is to provide a form of roll holder for use in calculators, and other forms of printing mechanism employing a platen or similar printlng surfacef. whereby rolls of different widths canA be supported at the rear of the platen by swinging arms, and which arms besides being adjustably connected with the carriage, can be shifted to permit the arms to be both swung inwardly and be held against the rear of the carriage when not in use.
In the accompanying drawing showing one embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan View showing the rear portion of a calculator`with the platen and carriage, and the roll holder supporting a roll. Fig. 2 is a partial rear view of the supporting bar and roll holder. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is an end view of the parts shown in Fig. l.
In the drawings, 270 represents a sup- .porting member at the rear of a calculator, or other printing machine, on which is mounted a carriage denoted generally by 1276, that may be slidable on the machine through ball-.bearings 284. The carriage as shown is provided with the usual platen 283 rotatably mounted thereon.
At the rear of the .carriage are pivotally mounted a pair of arms 320, swinging on blocks 319. vThese blocks are mounted to slide longitudinally on the carriage each at one side' of the middle portion, whereby the arms can be brought to a parallel position at different distances apart to support a roll 300. The'blocks 319 are also arranged to recede sufficiently to permit the'arms to 'be swung inwardly and lie against the supporting member ofy the carriage; and are preferably retained in this posltlon by springs at the hinges.
In the specific arrangement shown, a bar 270 at the rear slot` 27 whose side walls are overhung, the .slot belng dovetailed in section, as indicated 1n Fig. 2. The blocks 319 are similarly shaped to slide in this slot 279. rlhe arms 329 are hinged or pivoted to these blocks to of the carriage contalns a swing on a vertical axis, and each arm is` .provided with a at its outer end; for the purpose of enter- .ing the bore`of the rol13OO and rotatably'v Thehinge of each arm-- support the same.
is provided with a suitable spring, such v as `pin 323 on the inner face, l
a coil spring 321. These springs will 'obviously press the arms inwardlyr or toward" the roll 300 for supporting it, to have its Y It will thus be seen-that a very simple and economic arrangement is provided, that is quickly adjustable for dii'erent sized rolls; and when not desired for use, the arms are compactly folded inwardly into or against the carriage andretained insuchpositilon.
by thesprings ready for instant use.
Having thus described my invention what I claim 1s: 1. n a -printing machine, the combination is u'sedV up, oi'- atV with a carriage and a platen thereon, of a f bar at the rear of the carriage having a horizontal guide-way extending on both sides of the middle of the carriage, a'pair of blocks slidably mounted in the guide-way one on each side of the middle portion, an arm hinged to each said block, and a lug on the inner face of each arm at its outer end,
the blocks being slidable to permit the arms to extend transversely rearward in parallelism to support rolls of different widths, the blocks being slidable also to recede and permitthe arms to be folded inwardly to both lio against the guide-way, substantially as set ln a printing machine, the combination with a carriage and a platen thereon, of a bar at the rear of the carriage having a horizontal guide-way extending on both sides of the middle of the carriage, `a pair ofblocks slidably mounted in the guide-way :locl
'l5A may be provided in one on each side of the middle portion, an arm hinged t0 each said block, a lug on the inner face of each arm at its outer end, and
a coil spring on each said hingefthe blocks being slidable to permit the arms to extend transversely rearward in parallelism to snp# port rolls of diii'erent Widths, the blocks bemg slidable also to recede and permit the arms to be folded inwardly by the springs and both be held against the guide-Way, sub-4 stantially as set forth.
3. In a printing machine, the combination with a carriage and a platen thereon, of a bar at thev rear of the carriage having a horizontal,` guide-Way extending on both sides of the middle of the carriage, a pair of blocks slidably mountedin the guide-Way one on each side of the middle portion, an
